Hairdressers: what shampoo do you use?

GaryNumanIsOlderThanGaryOldman · 11/08/2017 13:27

Hello there
I recently had blonde highlights put in and bought (kerching) "anti-yellow" shampoo and conditioner from the salon. (Will be able to tell you brand later, am currently away but killing time until it stops raining!) It appears to be no different to the considerably cheaper swiss o par purple shampoos.
No noticeable "salon effect" iyswim and I won't buy it again. Sad it was ludriculously expensive for me £30 for two bottles but maybe you stylish lovelies would think it was an investment and I am cheap. you would be correct on the latter
So...

  1. If you are a hairdresser yourself what do you use on your own hair?
  2. What is your opinion on the salon products you sell?
  3. What is the cheapest brand you would use yourself/recommend?
  4. What supermarket brands would you go out of your way to avoid?
  5. Is there truth in the anti-dandruffs drying out scalp so worsening dandruff theory/all in ones screwing up your hair?

First time on style+beauty. Please be gentle Brew
Oh and I know I asked for hairdressers' input but any classy stylish Beckys with the good hair Wink what do you use/what's the maximum you would pay for a hair product? (Those who can afford a weekly salon blow dry need not reply EnvyGrin)

Thanks in advance Flowers

Where do y'all buy your kerastase?

PalacePalacePalace · 13/08/2017 21:36

bonbon which products do you use for red coloured hair?

shuttheblinds · 13/08/2017 23:08

I can tell when I use a cheap shampoo. I suppose it deoends on your hair type and everyone is different.

I used Kerastase for years, and loved it, however just recently my hair started to feel a bit dry so I changed. I now use a purple shampoo, every 2/3 days (I wash my hair daily) and inbetween use a new range I had never tried before but is absolutely brilliant for my hair, it feels softer, its so shiney and blow dries much nicer. It's L'anza strengthning shapoo and conditioner. Can't say enough good things about it for a brand I had never heard of. Even my DP mentioned last week that my hair looks healthy and shiney and he never comments on hair!

Chicken, I used to buy Kerastase from Look Fantastic. Bought some fromamazon once and was sure it was fake.

Ollivander84 · 13/08/2017 23:10

Allbeauty and TK maxx often have good stuff on their websites. Can't recommend as I don't use shampoo!

Seqkat · 13/08/2017 23:14

My hairdresser told me not to waste money on the super expensive stuff... I like body shop ginger shampoo, and she agreed that it suited my hair very well. Otherwise, she recommended the ogx argan oil conditioner (but not the rest of the range...) as what she used!

@Craiconwithit ... baby shampoo isn't no tears formula as in crying .... it's no tears as in a rip or tear ( to tear a piece of paper) ... common mistake

notevernotnevernotnohow · 14/08/2017 00:22

Actually it's a common mistake that it's a common mistake.
The "no more tears" symbol on Johnsons baby shampoo is because it i formulated ocular safety.

www.johnsonsprofessional.com/johnsons-baby/no-more-tears

Also baby shampoos use detergents with long chain surfactants, such as sodium trideceth sulfate or nonionic polymers that are less harsh than normal detergents, and they use only small amounts of these cleansers in their shampoos.

SomeOtherFuckers · 14/08/2017 00:24

Kerastase is lovely but only the elixir is really worth the money. 1L of Keratin 10 S/C is £12.99 each and lasts a whole year and is just as good. Herbal E, Garnier etc destroys my fine hair.

SomeOtherFuckers · 14/08/2017 00:32

@notevernotnevernotnohow ah fair enough that's me told . Cheers ... wish this programs would be bloody honest for once

SomeOtherFuckers · 14/08/2017 00:32

And they still hurt my eyes tbh

HurtyTeeth · 14/08/2017 00:34

Confused I don't get the "no tears - as in paper -" reference. What does shampoo have to do with tearing or ripping paper?

BeverlyGoldberg · 14/08/2017 05:15

For those who mentioned the L'Oreal professional 1 litre bottles ... they are cheaper on Amazon than they are in Sallies. I got 2 x litre bottles for £21 with free p&p.

The red one smells lovely.

Wonders71 · 14/08/2017 05:36

I use Argan oil of Morocco shampoo and conditioner (blue bottle) and the oil you rub into damp hair its about £6.99 a bottle but got it on offer for half price in Superdrug...im going to stock up. My hair feels gorgeous.

IamChipmunk · 14/08/2017 06:17

Off topic now but agree, what on earth would the point of baby shampoo being 'no more tears' - as in paper... It surely doesn't even make sense?!

Josiah · 14/08/2017 07:26

As there is a teardrop shape on the bottle I thought it was tears as in crying.

Of course the tears could relate to tangled hair and no more tearing through knots.

arrrrrgh · 14/08/2017 07:30

@ChickenVindaloo2 please let me know what you think of the silicone free L'Oréal, I've got the whole range sitting in my Lookfantastic basket but not sure wether it's worth £35. I always get excited when I find new silicone free products!

guestofclanmackenzie · 14/08/2017 09:18

Not a hairdresser, but I have long highlighted hair that needs looking after otherwise it resembles straw and I've experimented with tonnes of different brands.

Redken anti snap shampoo and conditioner.

Every 4th wash, Lloreal professional silver shampoo. You leave it on literally a couple of minutes and it refreshes the colours in my highlights and cleans out the blonde.

Moroccan oil... Hair oil. My desert island product. Makes all the other serums and hair oils I've tried feel like synthetic cheap crap! I once ran out and decided to go back to a cheaper one.. Big mistake. Yes, it's £25 but it lasts about 6 months but my hair absolutely loves it and the condition has improved massively since using it.

Shop around on "look fantastic" and other online hair outlets but I always end up buying from Amazon as I have Amazon prime.

ChickenVindaloo2 · 14/08/2017 11:35

@arrrrrgh I have tried the conditioner so far - puts me neither up nor down tbh. Will start on the shampoo tonight now that I have finished up the other shampoo I was using.

:-)

BoredOnMatLeave · 14/08/2017 11:44

Love this thread, mind me jumping on?

I have uncoloured hair that is very thick and long, but have a sensitive scalp so find most shampoos make my scalp red, itchy then dandruff. Only thing that works is T-gel, but doesn't make my hair feel nice at all, any ideas? Is Moroccan oil good for sensitive scalps?

Therealslimshady1 · 14/08/2017 19:35

Eucerin is the best brand for sensitive scalps, by far.

MoveOnTheCards · 14/08/2017 19:55

Pretty do you mean the Charles Worthington range you can get in Boots or is it salon only?

FlopIsMyParentingGuru · 14/08/2017 20:07

Just hijacking the thread a bit sorry but us Moroccan oil good then? I have curly hair but hate "crispy" hair so had been wondering about a serum type thing for it.

augustusglupe · 14/08/2017 20:31

I use Lloreal SP coloursave shampoo and conditioner and hair mask.
I used to use Kerastase for years, but prefer Lloreal

Bombardier25966 · 14/08/2017 22:18

Moroccan oil... Hair oil. My desert island product. Makes all the other serums and hair oils I've tried feel like synthetic cheap crap!

If you look at the ingredients in Moroccan Oil, it is also synthetic (not so cheap) crap!

guestofclanmackenzie · 15/08/2017 07:36

Well I did say cheaper hair oil products feel like synthetic crap.. I don't doubt that Moroccan oil isn't an organic product but for me, after years of using an Argan Oil product from Boots, using Moroccan oil really did feel so much more luxurious and it massively improved the condition in my highlighted and damaged hair.

The hairdresser gave me a little sample to try and told me I wouldn't use anything else once I had used this. I was very wary of the up selling of products whilst I'm the hairdressers but on this occasion she was right.
