Hairdressers: what shampoo do you use?

GaryNumanIsOlderThanGaryOldman · 11/08/2017 13:27

Hello there
I recently had blonde highlights put in and bought (kerching) "anti-yellow" shampoo and conditioner from the salon. (Will be able to tell you brand later, am currently away but killing time until it stops raining!) It appears to be no different to the considerably cheaper swiss o par purple shampoos.
No noticeable "salon effect" iyswim and I won't buy it again. Sad it was ludriculously expensive for me £30 for two bottles but maybe you stylish lovelies would think it was an investment and I am cheap. you would be correct on the latter
So...

  1. If you are a hairdresser yourself what do you use on your own hair?
  2. What is your opinion on the salon products you sell?
  3. What is the cheapest brand you would use yourself/recommend?
  4. What supermarket brands would you go out of your way to avoid?
  5. Is there truth in the anti-dandruffs drying out scalp so worsening dandruff theory/all in ones screwing up your hair?

First time on style+beauty. Please be gentle Brew
Oh and I know I asked for hairdressers' input but any classy stylish Beckys with the good hair Wink what do you use/what's the maximum you would pay for a hair product? (Those who can afford a weekly salon blow dry need not reply EnvyGrin)

Thanks in advance Flowers

Side tip - I once tried coconut oil on my hair - big mistake - took about 4 washes to get it out again

Did you put the shampoo on first before the water? That way no oil is left behind.

Of COURSE no tears in baby shampoo means it won't sting eyes, what's it got to do with paper ?

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 15/08/2017 07:50

I use the Aldi kangaroo paw plant shampoo and conditioner,in tests it came up better than the expensive £150 a bottle stuff so that's good enough for me!

Thegiantofillinois · 15/08/2017 07:58

bored go for the body shop ginger. I read abo u t it on here and it's fab. I alternate between that and whatever &bm have on offer, but it calms my head and makes my highlighted hair soft.

gingerbreadmam · 15/08/2017 08:10

i love morrocan oil but mostly for the scent. I can't remember it really making a huge difference to my hair.

Been using wella luxe oil since Christmas and feel like that has though. Having said that i also used to love avon's serums.

WomblingThree · 15/08/2017 08:19

@BoredOnMatLeave, you probably have Seborrheic Dermatitis rather than dandruff. Get some sls/paraben free shampoo and everything-free conditioner and knock the t-gel down to once every 10 days or so. Don't wash your hair every day, don't put conditioner on your scalp, don't "scrub" your head just smooth the shampoo on and then blast with the shower to rinse. See your GP for some Dermovate scalp treatment. Both DD and I suffer from SD and it's a bitch to get under control.

Wellysocksbox · 15/08/2017 08:20

The OP asked for advice from hairdressers. Can I ask everyone who has replied - are you all hairdressers?

SaucyNoBrainer · 15/08/2017 08:24

Hairdresser here!

Hello!

Yes the salon shampoo is better. It's the conditioning agents that are top notch.

Supermarket shit is full of silicone (called dimethicone) and it coats the hair too much.

If you really think it's a sales pitch, then carry on with Pantene but I'm right

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 15/08/2017 08:46

Bored try TBS ginger shampoo and L'Oréal men's anti dandruff with selsun ( black bottle with an orange lid. I have been itch and flake free for the last 5 years using that combo for the first time in 25 years.

guestofclanmackenzie · 15/08/2017 09:04

She asked for advice from hairdressers and also "any stylish beckys with the good hair"

Orangebird69 · 15/08/2017 09:07

Wellysock, no I'm not but I passed on the recommendation my hairdresser gave me. Is that good enough?!

Silverstreaks · 15/08/2017 10:11

@arrrrrgh if you are sensitive to silicone and it irritates your scalp I'd steer clear of the L'Oreal Silicone free shampoo and conditioner.
I don't know what they replaced the silicone with, possibly mineral oil, but it made my scalp bleed scratching after trying it.
Con.

Cerseilannisterinthesnow · 15/08/2017 13:51

My hair is colour melt so darker on top and ashy blonde through to the ends, I use fanolla no yellow shampoo once a week and usually higher end colour protect shampoo/conditioner, whatever is cheapest on lookfantastic etc but I like redken, kerastase and pureology.

I did use to use supermarket shampoos but found my colour stripped out really quick and my hair was always left dry and unmanageable. Nice shampoos are my treat

LockedOutOfMN · 15/08/2017 16:16

SaucyNoBrainer Can you recommend some specific products, please? Like OP, I have blonde highlights and love to keep them looking fresh.

Christmastree43 · 15/08/2017 16:27

Bleach London make the best/ strongest purple shampoo I have ever tried! Of the ones I've tried I'd rank them...

  1. Bleach London by miles (was about £6 when I bought a bottle in boots last week)
  1. and 3. Provoke touch of silver and Osmo silverising - pretty much equal (limited) results for me
SaucyNoBrainer · 16/08/2017 05:52

Not really. To be specific I'd have to be in front of you, check for scalp conditions etc.

I like paul Mitchell - look up a supplier and go to a salon.

And to another - just because a shampoo doesn't work for you doesn't make it a con Hmm

OhtoblazeswithElvira · 16/08/2017 07:02

I too was surprised at the L'Oréal silicone-free shampoo. It turned my hair into a greasy, dull mess from the first wash.

My hairdresser advised me to use L'Oréal Elvive and Bleach London silver (and rose for a rose gold tint). She said that's what she uses.
I wash my hair everyday (sweaty early morning gym sessions so I have to) and it's very fine too. But these products are great.

ChickenVindaloo2 · 16/08/2017 11:54

YEah, I put the coconut oil on my hair dry and then shampooed it out. I must have done something wrong. Never mind.

I'm washing my hair shortly with the Loreal silicone free shampoo and conditioner together for the first time. Will report back.

ChickenVindaloo2 · 16/08/2017 11:55

What does anything think about the loreal professional silver/purple shampoo for blonde hair?

SukiTheDog · 16/08/2017 12:27

I had highlights yesterday. I'm cheap too Wink so, nearly collapsed when the total for highlights, drying off and two "keep the colour good" products came to £150. I'd never been to the salon before and usually pay much less. So, I've bought the products and will use them but can't help wondering, are they really necessary?

Watching ....

SukiTheDog · 16/08/2017 12:28

Should add, it's the best colour I've had in years. Even DH and DS commented (unheard of) so, I should stop moaning!

SaucyNoBrainer · 16/08/2017 12:31

If you prefer cheaper and feel you didn't get value, maybe go to somewhere a bit more economical .... good hairdressers live and work everywhere

SaucyNoBrainer · 16/08/2017 12:33

Oh haha I didn't read the next comment lol.

Well ahem 😂Wink

Upyourdaisy · 16/08/2017 12:38

My hairdresser recommended milkshake purple shampoo to tone my highlighted hair which works really well, after going blonde all over my hair was quite damaged so I bought TIGI urban antidotes level 3 which makes my hair feel amazing
