I'm over 40. I wear a ponytail. I also give no fucks.

GerardButlersBeard · 10/08/2017 23:21

A side plait is nice like clairewitch. Might try that.

WatchingFromTheWings · 10/08/2017 23:22

41yo ponytail wearer here! I use the spiral hair bands now so it's not so tight. Doesn't bend the hair so less breakage. Noticed my hairs gone thicker since I've been using them.

GerardButlersBeard · 10/08/2017 23:24

Yes you have to be careful with not tying hair too tight as can get a breakage line across the hair, so loose is the way to go or pin it up loosely.

plentyofshoes · 10/08/2017 23:56

Is this over 40 thing serious?

Gezzagirl · 11/08/2017 00:13

I have shoulder length hair and wear a ponytail I'm 44. My hair is quite thin though so sometimes I wear one of those fake scrunched from hot hair, it looks really good. Well I think so anyway

PiratePanda · 11/08/2017 09:03

Nothing wrong with ponytails on the over 40s; they can look great.

I wear mine half up -- up at the front with a brown hairband that matches my hair colour, down at the back. Or in one of two styles of ponytail-based buns with a stick through them.

FWIW I can't just do chopsticks without a hairband because I have silky straight hair. They don't work for everyone.

Buy some spin pins, search 'up do' on Pinterest and prepare for achy arms but fabulous hair 😁

BadlyDrawnBuoy · 11/08/2017 10:45

It's easy - just twist your hair up and secure it using a clip like this:

Over 40 with long hair.. what do you do when you put it up?
Dowser · 11/08/2017 12:12

I'm 65 with longish blonde highlighted hair.
I tie it up in a mid height pony tail and then put a small bow in it. Not a big jojo bow I hasten to add.
I find a hair bobble very uninteresting. If I need a bun , if I'm putting on sun cream for example, I just wind the pony around the bow and grip.

Probably a complete fashion disaster but it works for me on holiday. I also have a fringe.

I often match my earrings to the bow.

( no hope for me now, is there...but I don't give a toss. It's lovely to be in that comfortable place with yourself)
On non windy days, I just wear it down.

Dowser · 11/08/2017 12:14

Ooh what's a spiral band?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 11/08/2017 12:39

Currently sporting a pony tail with a bandana tied in a bow around it. Am nearer 50 than 40. I quite like pigtails too. So shoot me. I sometimes shove my hair in one of those claw clip things, but my hair is really fine and escapes easily.

Interested in hearing more about those spiral band things though.

EmNetta · 11/08/2017 13:14

Mine's a pony too, although I'm nearly twice 40, usually with a scrunchie or small scarf to soften effect. I have straight, slidey hair too, so when just washed/windy weather I pull the pony arrangement just behind left ear, thus avoiding collisions with coat collar, and just wait for the usual compliments (including two hairdressers and younger brother - a real surprise the first time).

specialsubject · 11/08/2017 13:25

Two bunches or two plaits are for kids, all other styles are for anyone.

I do have to watch ponytails as my heavily straightened hair is fragile. But it is a perfectly acceptable style!

Dizzybacon · 11/08/2017 13:28

I'm 38 and wear a ponytail. Pull it tight and it takes 10 years off with an instant facelift Smile

Mychildcouldnotbreaatfeed · 11/08/2017 13:28

Well over forty.

Wear pig tails when i am on the late run at 2am to collect kids from nightclubbing. That and bad clothes and bad music.

321zerobaby · 11/08/2017 13:33

I've got mid length hair and never wear it up, i don't like myself with it up.

PassiveAggressiveFloofiness · 11/08/2017 13:46

I used to have very very long thick hair and liked it plaited and up, to reduce the volume. If you google "halo braid" this looks nice, fairly easy to do. I liked Heidi plaits too.

I used to plait it into two simple plaits and leave them plaited for sleeping, then put them up in the morning. DH did any French/goldfish/complicated plaits for me as they made my arms ache (he used YouTube videos to learn how to do it).

I was also fond of a very large ballet bun, but worn on the back of my head so the top of the bun is visible, a bit 60s style.

I think you can wear ponytails (or any style!) at any age. I really really miss my plaits and regret that I spent so much time being ungrateful about my hair (too heavy, too thick, too much work etc).

Sgtmajormummy · 11/08/2017 14:37

I have lots of wavy blonde shoulder-blade length hair that only a hairdresser can tame. I usually do the doubled over ponytail bun (good for hiding split ends!) but have had success doing it up with a transparent hairband on like a "crown" and then using it to loop my hair up 1940s style. Messy but elegant IYSWIM.

Sgtmajormummy · 11/08/2017 15:53

After a good look around Pinterest this is similar to what I mean.

JaneJeffer · 11/08/2017 16:14

Marklah love your hair!

LockedOutOfMN · 11/08/2017 17:21

I am 36 and have boob length hair. I often wear my hair loose but am a teacher in a hot and sweaty classroom so certainly in the warmer months of the year (I live in a warm climate), I put up my hair in: high ponytail (also for gym), high bun (high ponytail, loop around, pin the ends - I don't put hairpins all around), side ponytail, side plait, easy chignon (gather as if for a low ponytail, twist all, put up against the back of my head, fold the end and clip with a banana type clip).

Newtssuitcase · 11/08/2017 17:25

I wear mine in a pony tail or a single plait (from a ponytail rather than a french plait). I'm mid 40s and my hair is thick and below bra strap length.

sometimes I twist it up and just whack a pen or pencil through it if I need it completely out of the way.

I mainly wear it down tough because I'm lazy.

neveradullmoment99 · 11/08/2017 17:50

Marking this space as i love different ideas. My hair is long, in my forties and mostly wear it in a large claw clasp. Its very boring.
