Pony tail or twisted up with one of those clip things - didn't know you're not meant to over 40 - I'm nearly 60 Grin.

I'm 48 next week. Fine, wavy wilful white blonde hair down to my armpits. Have a fringe. I don't give any headspace whatsoever to what I should or shouldn't do/wear/be/ etc at my age!

I do pony tails (high and low), single, double and triple plaits (i.e.: two either side, and one at the back, or two at the back, one on top of the other), side plait, sort of bun pony tails that are looped when I can't be arsed. Sometimes wear it loose if it's been properly tamed and conditioned beforehand. I'm going to look more into using bobby pins - thanks, pp, for that link!

Not keen on the big cottage loaf bun/hairy arsehole on the top of the head look which seems to be v. popular atm!

I do this... Messy falling down pony style. I pull down strands a bit because I've a long forehead and otherwise look like the Tefal man! It's this colour.

Spin pin. Stays in place longer than a ponytail.

I didn't read the edict either. Mine is half way down my back, thick wavy and I have a heavy fringe.

I wear it in a loose messy bun. I sometimes tie it in a pony tail. Either way I get headaches.

I like it best in two big messy buns high on my head that look like crazy big bat ears.

I'm 44 and I'm keeping it long. If it's short it requires to much work.

TroysMammy · 11/08/2017 21:40

During the day I wear mine loose as it's straight but at night I plait it to stop it tickling me and making me scratch in my sleep.

I'm relatively new to long hair (and also way over 40) and have been experimenting. I do find fiddling about at the back of my head hard though - I tend to see a tutorial on YouTube, think, well that looks easy, and go buy the particular clip or doodad needed. The first time I try it, it goes brilliantly and I then rush out and buy all the available colours of the clip or doodad.

Then I can never do it again! No idea why.

I do like these which make even a bodged-up twisty bun look neat and tidy: ebuni.com/the-romaine-hair-bun-holder-and-pin.html and the good old octopus clip tegenaccessories.co.uk/collections/thick-hair/products/octopus-thick-hair-claw?variant=5470334851

I'm just experimenting with hair sticks (well, okay, pencils) but am coming across the usual difficulties with working behind my head. My hair is fine and slippery but there is a lot of it (a difficult combination) so am watching this thread with interest for other ideas.

I'm 44 and have just longer than shoulder length hair - it's thick, coarse and ugly-pouffy-curly so I straighten it. I would love a simple easy way to put it up, but it's so thick, most styles with pins and twists simply don't stay in. Claw grips are okay but are uncomfortable on the back of my head...messy bun just comes out and the hair at the very base of my neck is too short anyway...pony tail NOPE (I have a chubby face)...spin pins won't twist in or just bounce out...etc.

I've had better luck with rubber covered kirby grips but still need loads of them, and even they slowly ease away from my head like a weird metallic carpet.

I end up with a doubled over pony in one of those spiral scrunchies. Boring. Sad

I'm 45 and have high ponies, low ones, messy buns and it's purple.

A high, tight pony is like an instant facelift!
