Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. In order to make use of the below form and join in I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

NEW ADDITIONS since last thread:

Do I Really Need to Wear Sunscreen Every Single Day of the Year?

Understanding Which Sunscreen(s) to Buy

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

If you pose a question and we need more contextual information to answer properly we may ask you to fill in the following form. Please only use this form when asked, unsolicited forms will be deleted. Responses to the form can be found here

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

AUGUST 2017: Sunscreen is pretty much non-negotiable at the moment (not that it’s ever not Wink), RL bumps have been met in the road for some, unfortunately. Grief sucks but we do our best to offer a bit of comfort even if it is just something as inane as skincare chat Smile. Some of us are lucky enough to be nerding out in French pharmacies whilst pretending to do that holiday thing, the Shelf Porn Off is still on…

I can't believe we're on thread 9 Shock

I like Avene Hydrance for daytime moisturiser during colder months. They have a light and rich version, but my skin is normal to dry so I am not sure if it would suit other skin types.

Currently alternating between Dr Jart Water Drop and LRP Toleriane as I finished up my Hydrance...and I was using Cerave PM but as it contains niacinamide, I was afraid it should not be combined with Vitamin C so I have moved it to PM (am I correct?)

Pupsiecola · 21/09/2017 15:38

Thanks Bo. Yes I have the Eucerin and it would be too heavy. Be interested to know you think of the Matsuyama when you finally get it.

miffy2 · 21/09/2017 16:29

bo I would appreciate it if you could name the cream you are looking into from Matsuyama (along with any other items from the brand). My DH will be travelling to Japan in the coming months and I am damned if I will let that opportunity go wasted. :)

yongnian · 21/09/2017 20:01

I'm here but not...just checking in as moving tomorrow...lego sorry to hear things are so rough for you at the moment...

EnidButton · 21/09/2017 22:41

Good luck with the move yong Flowers

JD Let me know when parcel arrives so I know the powder didn't leak and get intercepted by the drug squad. Grin

botemp · 22/09/2017 13:22

yong, I'm late with the well wishes so have some Wine, I'm sure you'll be in need of it by the time you catch up. Hope all went as well as possible.

miffy2, I'm green with envy pack him an empty suitcase, I could soooo easily fill it. Linking to the company page so you have pictures and Japanese names here for the Ceramides/Soy line (you'll need to use Google translate), it's the milky lotion and the gel cleanser I'm interested in most, possibly with the cream for nighttime use. Did just see that they do a trial package containing the entire range (most Japanese brands actually do this, they're very handy but with shipping to here not always the best deal) for only Y540 (which is around €4-5) that has the entire line in it.

Their M-Mark line has also intrigued me which is mostly amino acid based (they hydrate in skin care but not in an instant replenishing way like HA but in a restorative way, so over time improves the condition of the skin. Amino Acids also encourage cellular repair, provide antioxidant protection, boost UV protection). They also do a little tester kit, so I think I'll be ordering some tester kits at first. And even though it's essential oil based I'm really tempted to get their Millenium Mother kit purely for the whacky name and space-age packaging Grin.

Has anyone given the normal/new Toleriane Ultra or the Riche a go? There's a few silicones and Shea in there that makes it a poor choice for some but could possibly be a good winter choice?

In silicones news, I tried TO Vit C for the first time after a week's rest yesterday and had an instant breakout a few hours in. It really isn't for me, am debating on whether to bother getting a refund, wondering how much hassle it is for such a tiny amount.

Have my eyes on a new Vit C though, had looked at it before but they didn't ship internationally at the time. Skin Deva Vitamin C 20% with Ferulic and Vit E, looks promising and apparantly much loved by subscibers of Dr Dray. It's $24.99 plus $6.95 shipping, but you can find referral codes everywhere for a 10% discount which for me would put it under the import tax threshold (Hurray! Anyone up on the CETA deal, btw? I'm wondering if it''ll be worthwhile ordering from Canada with no hassle soon or if that's just an imaginary pipe dream, I know there's plenty of issues surrounding it otherwise).

botemp thank you once again for all the information, I am definitely going to get a few sample kits, think that is a good way to go. DH won't have a huge amount of shopping time (if any) so I will do my usual US trick and have everything delivered to his hotel in advance of his arrival ;)

I just got an email from skincity saying Medik8 is 20% off at the moment...in case anyone fancied a flutter there. Speaking of skincity my Verso eye serum arrived two days ago and I have used it both nights (tiny drop) - their packaging and CS is so good. I was sent a shopper bag, a tiny cosmetics bag, two samples and a little Japanese figurine (possibly a collectible?). I am hoping the eye serum works out, any improvement to my one (!) puffy eye would be fabulous.

Good luck with your move Yong and lots of hugs for Lego - any chance someone could come wash your hair for you, over the side of the bath? Failing that, maybe a Lush cleansing shampoo bar might help (less faffing around with liquids)?

miffy2 · 22/09/2017 15:06

Bo I just checked out that Skindeva site and the products look eerily similar to those from Timeless. Like, down to the three 'pure' products, all the Matrixyl combos (that is what caught my eye) and the accessories (eg derma roller thingy).

JDSTER · 22/09/2017 16:14

Enid I've just got home and there's a card from postman- missed parcel. I KNOW it's from you because in the surname section-where my name should be- he's written "cat sticker" GrinGrin.

EnidButton · 22/09/2017 21:15

Grin JD 🐱 It is a bit bulky to fit through a letterbox. (The parcel not the cat!)

RubyGoat · 22/09/2017 21:47

Thanks for the recommendations everyone. I'm going shopping tomorrow (hopefully) as I'm getting cabin fever, so I'll have a look then. I'm trying to make more effort with my skin again. Need a bit of a mental kick up the backside, I've been feeling quite sorry for myself recently but I need to find ways round things, there's no point giving in to it. I do need to economise a bit (massively) though as I've been signed off sick for another couple of months.

JDSTER · 22/09/2017 22:38

Hope you enjoy the shopping tomorrow Lego Flowers

botemp · 22/09/2017 22:59

I can't remember what it was but Timeless has either fragrance or essential oils that put me off, miffy. I wouldn't be surprised if it's the same company, a lot of those US brands operate in similar ways selling the same sort of things. Unless you're already a seasoned veteran with Japanese online shopping it may be helpful to contact the hotel as Japanese addresses are really weird (more like directions). Amazon is probably the easiest to order through. Though Yahoo shopping is big there too, as is Rakuten.

🐈 now too? As if our menagerie of 🐌, 🐑 and asses (my phone seems to emoji discriminate against donkeys and asses) wasn't diverse enough already.

Lego, I was thinking maybe the apple cider vinegar, nettles, and rosemary brew I made awhile back would be good for you too. I used it to spray in post shower but it was also great as a quick cleanse between shampooing, I just spritzed it on. I have to dig up the recipe again but I've been meaning to anyhow as I miss it.

I'm reporting the three spots on my chin to the Skincare Police. I know I've eaten a fair bit of cake etc this month and I'm due on, but they could've staggered their arrival a bit. Zineryt past two nights and now Cicaplast should hopefully get rid.

Really need this period to start now. My boobs are twice as heavy as usual and mood has been rubbish. On day two all will be well so hurry up!

EnidButton · 23/09/2017 21:30

For anyone who's missed the soap thread, I've just tried the radical approach of using bar soap instead of shower gel/cream. This one www.faithinnature.co.uk/products/coconut-soap/finsoapcoco1.aspx?productid=finsoapcoco1

Made skin feel squeaky whilst in the shower which isn't a good thing I don't think but it doesn't feel any drier or tight afterwards. It was a lot easier to dry off too which is great for me when I'm having a bad day illness wise. Thought I'd share on here too. I think Olli has ordered some bar soap to try too.

SheStoodInTheStorm · 23/09/2017 22:49

I've picked up the wrong bloody moisturiser - toleraine ultra and not toleraine fluide 😢

Pupsiecola · 23/09/2017 22:54

JDSTER what is this? "LRP ceramide/niacinamide moisturiser".

JDSTER · 23/09/2017 23:03

pupsie www.laroche-posay.us/toleriane-double-repair-moisturizer-3337875545792.html
Only available in US at the moment unfortunately. I'm using at night.

SheStoodInTheStorm · 23/09/2017 23:29

@JDSTER that looks great!!! Hope it comes to the UK.

EnidButton · 23/09/2017 23:33

I've got my eye on that one too. Looks good for nighttime. Got excited when I saw it a couple of weeks ago in here then I realised it wasn't available in the uk. Wonder why it's not available here?

Shestood Did you buy the LRP ultra in a shop rather than online? If it's unopened you can take it back.

That's another thing the US has, they can just take beauty products back willy nilly. Used half a pot of $$$ moisturiser and changed your mind? No problem. Lipstick started giving you chapped lips after a week of use so you want a refund? Sure. Envy

EnidButton · 23/09/2017 23:34

Even if you just don't like something after using it you can return it! Must make buying face powder foundation a whole lot easier

SheStoodInTheStorm · 24/09/2017 00:00

Yes from Boots, not sure if kept the receipt though Confused wouldn't have noticed it if it wasn't for bo mentioning the shea!

It'd be so good to be able to take stuff back!

On another note - got the rage in tk maxx today. Trying to look at the make up and it's full of teenage girls opening nearly everything and sticking their fingers in to swatch. I mean who is going to buy that? I think they need make up security!

EnidButton · 24/09/2017 00:49

Last time I was in TK Max the shop assistant came over and really told two teenage girls off for opening things. 😳 Even I was scared!

Just take it back. If you haven't opened it they'll probably let you swop it. Worth a try.

RubyGoat · 24/09/2017 09:04

I got a bottle of the Sukin shampoo... I'm Shock at the price if I buy it full price though! And yes, regarding the behaviour (of mostly teenage girls) in TK Maxx, it's quite disgraceful sometimes. More than once, I've see them come in after school while I've been browsing, & the whole group basically do a full face of makeup with the samples.

SheStoodInTheStorm · 24/09/2017 09:08

These weren't even samples! They were just opening and using the products Shock

I'm going to look for the Sukin too. Currently trying Maui (3 for 2 in Boots).

I wish LRP would call them something different!! It's so easy to get confused.
