Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. In order to make use of the below form and join in I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

NEW ADDITIONS since last thread:

Do I Really Need to Wear Sunscreen Every Single Day of the Year?

Understanding Which Sunscreen(s) to Buy

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

If you pose a question and we need more contextual information to answer properly we may ask you to fill in the following form. Please only use this form when asked, unsolicited forms will be deleted. Responses to the form can be found here

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

AUGUST 2017: Sunscreen is pretty much non-negotiable at the moment (not that it’s ever not Wink), RL bumps have been met in the road for some, unfortunately. Grief sucks but we do our best to offer a bit of comfort even if it is just something as inane as skincare chat Smile. Some of us are lucky enough to be nerding out in French pharmacies whilst pretending to do that holiday thing, the Shelf Porn Off is still on…

I can't believe we're on thread 9 Shock

Just by the by in case anyone is using Clarins face creM (not sure which) but a lady at my children's school 's face and scalp are covered in hundreds of tiny burns that resemble really bad dying case of chicken pox. Apparently she has used the same products for 20 years but now cannot even use water on her face until the dermatologist gets her some special prescription cream.... not good at all.
Luckily she is a very up beat lady .i think I'd still be crying. Anything that even touches her face now burns it.

YouAndYourFloofyCatNose · 12/09/2017 17:29

I love lurking on these threads as I find them really interesting despite doing nothing to my skin myself Blush (except sunscreen of course!). And bo you have been very kind to me in the past under one of my previous MN names Flowers)

I am only delurking to say thank you as one of my (usually very grumpy) teen DDs actually gave me an unprompted hug - the reason was Cicaplast which I bought for her based on these threads. All her forehead spots have gone and I am A Good Mother for today at least. So thank you all very much, both on DD's and my own behalf!

EnidButton · 12/09/2017 22:06

Brilliant news You! Having spots at any age is the pits but as a teen it can be particularly hard.

www.emtalks.co.uk/2017/09/fenty-by-rihanna-full-review.html?m=1 Rhianna has launched a make up range. Seems to be focused on complexion enhancing make up at the moment. Mainly posting because WOAH look at that shade range! 😍 Why can't they all be like that? I was cynical because, y'know, a celeb bringing beauty stuff out is nothing new, but it actually looks really good on first impressions. I think I'll give the powder a try at least.

I bought some handwash and hand lotion from a spa today that was a ridiculous price, so I can't buy anymore beauty related stuff this month. But my hands smell nice.

Oops, forgot pic. Fenty Beauty foundation shade range... (pic from the blog in link above)

Posting in threes again? Grin
The foundation has v v v good reviews from a pro makeup group I'm in so it's on my to order list

Pupsiecola · 12/09/2017 22:47

Have we ever discussed derma rolling?

Just watching Dr. Sam on YT and this was in the side bar:-

Ollivander84 · 12/09/2017 22:47

This is actually ridiculously helpful if I can explain it
The fenty foundation shades are the ones stickered on, the codes are sephoras colour IQ thing
Anyway if you go to the Sephora website and enter say "1R02" in the search box, it throws up a load of foundations. Click any of them and it suggests the shade for you. For me it suggested 3 foundations I already wear, and in the correct shades so the fenty foundation sticker in 110 should work for me

Pic here

Sephora blurb on it
Each Color IQ code is something like #X##. The first number will always be between a 1 and a 5, which indicates the intensity of the letter (R for red/cool, Y for yellow/warm) after it. If the first number is a 1 or a 2, Sephora considers it neutral (though personally I usually consider 2 to be leaning further to one undertone). The second number is how light or dark you are on a scale of 1-15. So let's say your Color IQ is 4Y02. You are heavily yellow-toned and fair. Let's say it's 1Y12. You're neutral toned and deep, which means you can usually flip between the matches for 1R12/1Y12 and they'll both look fine most of the time.

Tantpoke · 12/09/2017 23:11

enid The Fenty beauty range by Rhianna looks interesting - not sure why the N is back to front though Confused
I still haven't tried out my TO foundations.

I wore a bit of foundation today in the first time in what seems like ages and I only put it on from my nose to my cheeks and under my eyes and thats it. It felt lovely putting on so little but still managing to cover up what I wanted to. I just used my Clarins extra comfort because it was the closest to hand Hmm luckily the colour was ok

I have been applying TO Vit C 23% for weeks and I'm so happy with it, although I've given myself a break tonight with TO Buffet for a dose of hydration.

Tantpoke · 12/09/2017 23:15

by cheeks I meant the apple of my cheeks, not my whole facial area of cheeks

OMG cheeks now just looks like the most ridiculous word

botemp · 13/09/2017 09:12

Skinful, it's not Methylisothiazolinone, is it? I'd be surprised if Clarins suddenly started using that but that's one of those ingredients that people respond to with such allergy. Hope she recovers soon.

YouAndYourFloofyCatNose, awe how lovely. Cicaplast for the win there! Can't remember myself being especially kind on here as I don't stray that far from this thread but I'll take your word for it Halo

Ah you're behind Enid, we were already gushing over Fenty last Saturday and miffy is already stocked up. Are you still loving it, miffy?

Pupsie, dermarolling- in short great in a dermatologist office because they use the lengths that can actually penetrate and it would be really dangerous to do on your own for risk of infection and trauma. The success is also pairing with clinical formulations of active ingredients, so it's not down to just the dermaroller.

At home, the shorter lengths can help ingredients penetrate further but OTC cosmetics aren't designed to penetrate that deeply, the theory being active ingredients are more potent than without the derma roller prep. Potentially sounds great, right? Wrong, it means that ingredients like preservatives that aren't meant to be penetrating down deeper that are safe to sit on the skin become potentially harmful to overall health. Also, dermarollers are designed for one-time use in a derm's office, to be disposed of afterward, it takes more than a bit of rubbing alcohol to properly sanitise them. The needles aren't designed to be used over and over again either, that's why they appear so cheap.

For the body it's a slightly more nuanced position, as long as you don't follow it up with skincare containing harmful ingredients it's relatively safe to use there at the longer needle lengths as it still won't penetrate very deeply. Aside from causing a slight bit of trauma and temporarily boosting collagen production I really don't think it'll do much for stretch marks and/or cellulite except accelerate the natural healing processes and diminishing the appearance of it.

Tant, with all the talk of smelly arses on here who can blame you for becoming cheek obsessed Grin

Tantpoke · 13/09/2017 09:13

I'm working from home today so decided to finally try out the
TO 1.2 YG full coverage foundation on my right cheek
I like how it goes on and the colour is a perfect match for me
And the TO 1.2 N serum on my left cheek
I also like how it goes on, it is very sheer, but feels lovely and super smooth and the colour is also a perfect match for me albeit slightly cooler.
I won't be able to test longetivity because I'll be showering soon but good so far. Neither have settled into my pores, not yet anyway.
I cleansed my face last night with my simple micellar water which I haven't used for a while plus I also applied TO buffet which I also haven't used in a while and my cheeks are very red this morning (they haven't been for a few weeks now) Sad

Tantpoke · 13/09/2017 09:14

Bo Grin

Tantpoke · 13/09/2017 09:22

Actually they might also be red because I drank a fair bit of red wine Wine last night Blush which I've been avoiding for months in place of Prosecco, well who wouldn't quite frankly Grin

Just goes to show how quickly your skin can go to pot Shock

EnidButton · 13/09/2017 12:26

Oops I missed the Fenty chat! I must've been under a rock because I bet it was everywhere.

posting in threes again? Blush Oh god I don't even mean to. It just happens. Grin I did watch a couple of YT reviews last night who said they found the foundation quite dry and hard to blend as it set very fast. They both used the 'dot all over and then brush on quite thickly' technique though which I don't like. Looked like Sephora was giving out very generous samples, don't know if Harvey Nics would do the same. I'm impressed with the shade range even if the foundation isn't perfect, hopefully other brands will see and follow.

Another thing I'm very late to the party with: RCMA no color powder. Ordered last night after seeing someone with very pale white dry skin and someone with very deep brown oily skin use it and both looked good. Looks like it does nothing at all except set make up and stop oiliness which is all I want from a powder. V.cheap too.

JDSTER · 13/09/2017 13:59

Haven't posted for a while but still reading. enid what is this powder you speak of? I'm always on the look out for a good oil absorbing powder. Last one (name escapes me in -little green little pot) is one you recc'd I think.

EnidButton · 13/09/2017 15:15

JD The green one wasn't me, I never did buy it. Is it the one that smells of mint? The one I just ordered is RCMA No Color powder www.beautybay.commakeup/rcma/nocolourpowder?utm_source=google%2Bshopping&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=shopping%2Bfeed&selectedSku=RCMA0001F&ctyid=gb&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI06PV_qui1gIVysqyCh2nlgMuEAQYASABEgJudfD_BwE

Wayne Goss loves it m.youtube.com/watch?v=yAZEmPeHZ1E Looks like it was raved about amongst beauty vloggers a while ago but I only heard of it last night whilst watching Fenty reviews. I'll let you know what it's like. It's a big 3oz pot for £13. Shock So figured it was worth a whirl.

EnidButton · 13/09/2017 15:16

Hope you're doing alright btw Cake

miffy2 · 13/09/2017 15:18

Re Fenty makeup...
I was convinced the SA told me she was using shade 150 and the one I came home with was 170. After using it once or twice I was worried it was too dark (for this season; with fake tan it would be fine). Today however I tried it without powder and bronzer and it looked a lot better. I had been using Chanel powder which is not translucent, and was a bit heavy-handed with the oul' bronzer in the semi-darkness yesterday morning :)

I applied my MU at 7.15 am, it is now 3.15pm so it is on 8 hours and it looks good, particularly around the cheeks and forehead. I use the Fenty primer too and really like it.
I applied it in lots of different ways - sponge, brush, fingers - and the best way so far is to dot it on one side, buff it in with brush and then apply dots on the other side.
The contour stick is nice and I feel I am finally getting to grips with how to contour and not look ridiculous...but I haven't used the other sticks much yet (don't tend to wear highlighter during the week and I haven't figured out the concealer stick so that was a slight regret of a purchase) and I lurve the lipgloss both on its own or over another lipstick. Really glossy, not as sticky as it would appear and lasts ages.

It is definitely worth asking for a sample; the staff seem happy for you to test away. I went in with money burning a hole in my pocket as I had had a disastrous experience with YSL the previous day.

Re LRP Tolerianehydrating cleanser and Double Repair Moisturiser...I have used the cleanser three times now and so far I like it. It is less slippy than the original (which I did not like) and face felt fine after rinsing. Used the cream last night and it is thicker than Toleriane Fluide. The tube seems enormous (75ml) so it should last a few months as I didn't need very much.

JDSTER · 13/09/2017 15:25

Thanks Enid. miffy I've got both LRP products. I've been using the moisturiser for a couple of months at night and like it. I haven't tried cleanser yet but once I've finished original toleriane I'll be trying it as a second cleanse. I'm also not that keen on slippy feel and slight film of the original.

EnidButton · 13/09/2017 16:44

Olli Where is it you buy the huge bottles of Toleriane cleanser please?

Miffy I do like the look of the contour sticks. The light set looks quite cool toned. I've never contoured before but they seem easy.

userallusedup · 13/09/2017 20:09

I'm eyeing up that RCMA powder now, even though I'm on a self imposed makeup buying ban. I'm using and liking the innisfree one that was recommnded here (was that you Enid?) but I'll always have a need for lots and lots of mattifying powder in my life.

My TO foundation is ever so slightly too dark for me, I keep meaning to buy a lighter shade so I can mix but haven't got round to it yet. And of course I'm meant to be on a makeup buying ban - I'm not allowing myself to go looking at Fenty.

I'm liking the TO Vit c mixed with the smelly/not smelly ferulic stuff - I only use one drop though as it is a bit oily.

Tantpoke · 13/09/2017 20:34

I use and really like the dermablend powder which has no colour, blends in nicely and lasts well. I really like the pot and puff it comes with. I just half pull off the sticker so it regulates how much powder you get.

enid I triple posted as well Blush
