Is there such a thing as a cool/stylish waterproof jacket?!

Going on holiday and need a lightweight waterproof but I cringe at the thought of an anorak/cagoule-type jacket. I bought a North Face jacket a few years ago that was quite expensive but it's a bit on the heavy side and it's red, which was a mistake...should have gone for black. So I've hardly worn it. Any suggestions, please? Smile

Just want to chip in that the fucking Pacaway mac I bought from Fatface is definitely not waterproof - nor is it 'shower resistant' as claimed. I've taken pics of the sopping wet insides and will be sending it back as not fit for purpose.
Still haven't tried the Warehouse one I mentioned upthread - am almost hoping it's crap so I can go for the PS one.

ArieltheMermaid1720 · 03/08/2017 10:32

Completely agree Agoddess, I have the fat face one and it's useless.

Sorry, this was the coat I saw in TK maxx. It didn't post earlier.

PacificDogwod · 03/08/2017 16:25

IMO there is no point in short jacket-length rain jackets.
Even if they are reasonably water-proof (and yes, 'shower resistant' is a meaningless phrase Hmm), the water that does not soak in then runs off. And soaks your bottom half - more water than your legs would get without a water-proof jacket on the top.

So, mine must be at least mid-thigh or knee-length.
Or short and worn with water-proof trousers - now there's a glamorous look... Grin

I just bought a very cool cape from K.way which as a brand is considered very much the dogs bollocks in the land of style and beauty.
They also have jackets.

PetalMettle · 03/08/2017 20:15

Thanks @floisme - have bought a super cheap foldup thing and will keep looking...

Laquila · 03/08/2017 21:47

Katsite, you had me at "very cool cape". Then I clicked on your link and had a browse and found this absolute batshit craziness

but sadly I can't find the cape version.

Katsite · 04/08/2017 06:16

Grin Laquila, I don't think the cape exists in gold. For obvious reasons.

But some stylish Italian will carry that monstrosity off , I bet.

My DD lived in one of their winter jackets and the quality was fab.

nigelsbigface · 04/08/2017 08:31

Ive got a nice mac from Topshop. It's just seen me through a Very soggy festival
With no waterproofing issues, and the perfect weight so as to give a bit of warmth during a gusty rain shower, but also thin enough to fold up into a small ruck sack. It has a nice deep enough hood too.
Mine is silver so not for everyone, but they also do a cream one and a yellow one I think and stylish enough to wear in every day life.

Agustarella · 04/08/2017 11:15

Agreed that short waterproofs are useless. A wet arse is worse than a wet top half. I just ordered this parka to replace my shredded Barbour:

www.regatta.com/schima-parka-jacket-black/

I'm hoping the slightly flared shape is nicer and more flattering than the usual square boxy shape of those ugly walking jacket things. The old Barbour was a nice thigh length on me, but the shape did me no favours, especially after I lost the hood and had to pair it with a mismatched bobble hat! I actually went on the thread to find a summer waterproof but drew a blank. I would have just got another Barbour but their longevity is much exaggerated (mine went into holes after 7 years) so even while the cost to wear ratio isn't exactly scandalous I'd rather get something cheaper. I'll stick to wearing a blazer in the summer ajd dodging showers!

Lalalandfill · 04/08/2017 11:42

Protected Species is da bomb and well worth the extra cash. I've had their mac in white for several years and it's so stylish and keeps the rain off. Could not recommend more.

kittyhello · 04/08/2017 13:05

If the Op is still after a stylish waterproof coat I saw this reasonably priced one I tried it on and it looks much better irl. Such a fab price too, I was very tempted.

PacificDogwod · 04/08/2017 15:14

Lalalandfill, how did the PS Mac in white stand up to RL? Kids? Dogs? Dirty wet streets??
It looks great but I am not sure that white and I are a good combination Hmm

Lalalandfill · 04/08/2017 18:53

It's machine washable so it's fine ... plus it's a sort of off-white so stains not quite so obvious. It is most def a summer mac though, I wish they'd do one with a warm lining so I could spend even more money there

Wenchelda · 04/08/2017 18:55

Aargh I was away on holiday so held off ordering the PS mac and now it's out of stock! Angry

Lalalandfill · 04/08/2017 20:04

It's still in stock in some colours, as I said I have the white and it's incredibly stylish, even my dds complimented it Smile

Wenchelda · 04/08/2017 22:31

Yes white is the only colour in stock in large/size 3 that is need. I think white is asking for trouble with 2 young kids - no way would it stay looking as nice as it does in the pic! Hmm

PetalMettle · 04/08/2017 23:13

Oh I like that @kittyhello - just got to work out if I can bring myself to line Ashley's pockets...

mysteryfairy · 05/08/2017 08:00

I'm very tempted by the Protected Species coats but I think they fulfil a different purpose than the OP's. DD and I have navy raincoats from top shop and urban outfitters which are great for casual summer wear. We both stay dry but no warmth included. This is the sort of thing and reduced to £25 - urban outfitters

Floisme · 05/08/2017 19:42

Well I think the PS mac is going back Sad

I brought in The Adjudicator - aka my husband - and the first thing he said was 'What's that you've got in the pocket?'

He meant the hood of course. So much for me deluding myself I could keep it there without anyone noticing. I could ignore him - it wouldn't be the first time - but the trouble is, it's always going to annoy me now.

I shall give them my feedback and with any luck, they'll listen. I do wish them well.

PNGirl · 05/08/2017 19:51

I found one today in Ralph Lauren, randomly. No link sadly. It's navy with a cinchable waist and a big hood. DH says I look like I'm going sailing rather than hiking - I'll take it!

Laquila · 05/08/2017 20:00

Ah what a shame Flo. I took mine on its first non-work outing today in (usually rainy) Manchester and it was bloody sunny! First time I've felt remotely stylish in a waterproof though.
