Is there such a thing as a cool/stylish waterproof jacket?!

Going on holiday and need a lightweight waterproof but I cringe at the thought of an anorak/cagoule-type jacket. I bought a North Face jacket a few years ago that was quite expensive but it's a bit on the heavy side and it's red, which was a mistake...should have gone for black. So I've hardly worn it. Any suggestions, please? Smile

Thanks Laquila - hope you enjoy yours.

I feel ridiculously bereft so someone clearly needs to pass me a grip.

So it's just me and my poor Seasalt now. Never mind, maybe love will grow.

PacificDogwod · 05/08/2017 22:03

Aw, naw, Floisme! Sad

I am planning to keep the hood permanently attached.
I am currently waiting for fabric swatches as I was not quite brave enough to put my money were my mouth is Blush

Floisme · 05/08/2017 22:39

Ooh I hope you do like the fabric Pacific. You're right that the hood needs to be attached. I should have known better but hey, that's me.

I found this last week in Joules in Padstow for £35 and fell in love. It rained like mad all week and I stayed lovely and dry but not sweaty. I love it.

nigelsbigface · 06/08/2017 12:53

Whooo-I wanted to hate that as it's from joules (and I'm trying to pretend I don't like things from joules, Boden, Hush and the like as until now I've got most of clothes from Topshop) but I absolutely love that mac.

WhooooAmI24601 · 06/08/2017 15:02

Hah I felt the same way; I'm not a fan of the breton-skinnies-scarf thing Joules seems to offer up every year but I saw it in the window and just loved it. DH says I look like a curtain, he's presumably just jealous.

Rainatnight · 06/08/2017 15:27

Great thread. Though now I'm absolutely obsessed with PS.

Flo could the parka be an option for you?

nigelsbigface · 07/08/2017 06:10

GrinI am going to work today in a pair of trousers that my daughters say look like curtains. Curtains of the world unite!

OrangeButton · 07/08/2017 06:42

Dutch brand Happy Rainy Days is brill. More than OP is looking for but there's a sale on now. They have great full length with an extra section that means you can walk, and being Dutch, cycle (with a skirt on!) without getting wet. Love mine!!

Ahh Orange I had high hopes for thiose a couple of years ago, and ordered two sizes to try, but i wasn't happy with either. The sleeeves were long and v wide, and I seem to remember they felt quite bulky overall. Sadly!!

Floisme · 07/08/2017 10:11

Thanks Rainatnight but I wanted something that didn't obviously look like a raincoat which is why the trenchcoat style caught my eye. Ironically a parka with a visible hood wouldn't bother me at all!

I get that it's harder to fold the hood away on a trenchcoat but I'm not such a purist that I'd object to a bulkier collar. But I see all the Rainy Days trenchcoats have detachable hoods too so maybe most people don't mind.

ArieltheMermaid1720 · 07/08/2017 11:39

What is the HappyRainyDays like around the hips Orange? Is there a bit of room for a pear like me?!

OrangeButton · 07/08/2017 17:24

I'm more of an apple. They're cut for the Dutch market so longer than they appear on the model (which is good because the top of your wellies is under the coat so the rain doesn't trickle in them!).

They're not thin macs because they're designed for serious wet weather with wind.

OrangeButton · 07/08/2017 17:24

Sorry - more if an apple so can't say for sure!

ArieltheMermaid1720 · 07/08/2017 18:36

Thank you! Smile

Murpher · 07/08/2017 18:44

This is nice, but it's £99. Looks like it's feature in The Times has left it temporarily out of stock on-line but maybe available in store?

As featured in The Times

YogiYoni · 07/08/2017 22:39

I'm sending my PS mac back too. I wasn't a fan of the fit. It wasn't too small, just 'not right' iyswim?

gilmoregirl · 09/08/2017 18:41

Loving this thread thank you for all of the ideas. Still not found my lobster but always hopeful...

I ordered two of the protected species macs in grey. Sadly did not love it as much as I had hoped (thought it would be perfect as totally ticks all my boxes) it was just not quite right. The size 2 (m) fitted better in that it was more flattering on me but there was not quite enough of it if you see what I mean.... The size 3 (l) was really a bit too big for me so not very flattering but much better in sleeve and would have kept it if: the zip had been longer (I felt the zip was too short proportion wise), if the belt had been placed differently (perhaps the loops further back?) so I could wear it without the belt fastened, and I was not very keen on some of the trimmings (if that is what you call them?) like the laser cut button holes and the metalised toggle thingies.

I swithered for ages as so need a smart lightweight waterproof but in the end I decided that I just did not love it enough so the search continues...

Ideally I would like something like the merril coat was it the Wakefield? But lighter. Like that kind of A line so it has some shape but not a proper belt. Is it out there ?

Floisme · 09/08/2017 18:55

I'm starting to feel quite cross now. The UK is a rainy country. We're always being told how innovative the fashion scene is here. So why are none of these clever and inventive designers capable of coming up with a raincoat that keeps out the rain but doesn't make you look like Captain Birdseye?

I'm not disputing that there are technical issues but isn't problem solving a normal part of any job?

This isn't a go at Protected Species who are at least trying to tackle it. It's a pop at all the rest.

sortingmyselfoutslowly · 09/08/2017 20:11

Seasalt tincloth waterproof coats are most definitely waterproof. Mine has a nice leaf pattern on it. Not amazingly stylish but I like it
I stayed dry all day in very very wet conditions on a family day out wearing it!

MyPatronusIsAUnicorn · 09/08/2017 21:58

kitty I LOVE the navy version of the one you linked and i'm after a coat, but I need something that was also go with a black handbag, and that won't! But I've seen it and I want it! Argh!

GoldSpot · 09/08/2017 22:01

I have always found Zara very good for coats and jackets - loads to choose from.

Josiah · 18/08/2017 16:30

I wanted a grey lightweight raincoat but couldn't find one. I was looking at women's only.

Thanks to this thread I saw the Rains of Denmark ones and hadn't thought of looking at unisex ones!

I've ordered the Parka in the Smoke colourway.

Thank you.

Is there such a thing as a cool/stylish waterproof jacket?!
Josiah · 21/08/2017 16:59

^^^ My Rains of Denmark arrived only they sent me the wrong one!

They got the colour right with Smoke but didn't and the Parka they sent me the long jacket! I phoned them up and let them know and and one they sent me is more expensive but I can keep it as I decided I really like it. I'm glad I got the wrong one, it's lovely.

This is the one I now have, the colour is gorgeous.

Ooh that's really nice Josiah. What kind of fabric is it?
