Anyone gone from long hair to short?

Comealongpond89 · 23/07/2017 10:07

Need some advice from you wise ladies. I've got (and always had) long hair. Long being, at the moment, half way down my back. The shortest I've ever gone is just below my shoulders. I'm going for a haircut, a rare occurrence, next Friday. I'm considering going for a drastic change to a short style. I'm scared though! I've got quite a round face and am worried it'll look awful. Please throw some pictures you think will suit me. I'll upload a recent pic of myself. Thanks all.

I did. Very long curly hair. I chopped it to a short bob, and then went for properly short hair last year. It's so worth it. Much less effort! Also, I know it will grow if I want to change it. Just got to wait a bit.

Bubblysqueak · 23/07/2017 10:13

Yes same length as yours to pixie cut. I found with long hair I only ever put it up in a pony tail so what was the point.
I do so much more with it now it is short and it always looks styled.

Comealongpond89 · 23/07/2017 10:16

My hair is pretty much always in a ponytail! Just want it to look nice without to much effort haha

This is me too! Worried in case a shorter style will make me look weird 😂

Twoweekcruise · 23/07/2017 10:22

Yes, I went from long to short and blonde to brown all at the same time. It was so so much easier to look after BUT I absolutely hated it, it just wasn't me at all.
I've now found a happy medium at shoulder length.

ShowOfHands · 23/07/2017 10:26

Yep. 10 days ago I decided I was fed up with my mousy brown/greying medium length hair. DH's clippers and a box of hair dye later...

Yes. My hair used to be (during my teens & 20s) quite long, anything between mid back length & nearly knee length. I'm now sporting a very short pixie cut. People said short hair was hard to style, needed more attention etc. Nope, not when you consider that my long hair took an hour to blow-dry & could stay damp for 2 days if I bunned it before it was dry. And gave me neckache & headache from the weight of the bun. Now, some days I can be up, in & out of the shower, & dry in less than 10 minutes. Love it. My advice - buy a scarf, especially for winter. You'll feel like you have a cold neck at first! But be really, really sure before you cut, especially if you go for a pixie cut, they are a total pain to grow out.

FWIW, I don't think you have a particularly round face. I've recently started watching the French fashion designer Justine Leconte on Youtube, she's a really great blogger (IMHO) & covers a lot of subjects on Style & Beauty, among them is face shape & choosing a cut to suit your face. Definitely recommend if you're unsure.

I had my nearly waist length hair cut into a Lob a few months ago. I had it quite short but just about able to put up in a pony friendship work. My hair grows stupidly quickly and it needs a good chop again.

StewPots · 23/07/2017 10:55

Yep. I went from long brown hair that I couldn't style (useless with plaits etc so was just lank when down or whacked it in a ponytail. Got fed up and had it all cut off into a bob.

Next time I did it, I went blonde too, so within a year I've gone from long and brown that I've had all my life, to a white blonde bob!

It's currently a darker blonde, and I'm waiting for clip in extensions to arrive because I'm curious to see what I'd look like with long blonde hair and I'm too impatient to wait for it to grow!Grin

BestIsWest · 23/07/2017 10:57

Yes. Love it. Cold neck though. Always got a scarf in my bag.

Comealongpond89 · 23/07/2017 11:03

Thanks everyone. Think I might be brave and go for a long bob. Eek!

Can I put in a shout for the 'Little Princess Trust' - they make wigs for children who are bald and take hair donations.

My hair is almost waist length now and will be chopped this year to send to them.

Rinkydinkypink · 23/07/2017 11:58

Your def suit a long bob! I've been all lengths. Just be aware that if it's a bob it's unlikely going look great if left. It will be ok but to make it look good you will need to style it. Short hair is very easy to look after but I found it tedious after a while. You can do more with long hair but it takes ages to wash and dry.

I'm yet to find a middle ground!

MonsterQueen · 23/07/2017 12:05

ShowOfHands that is what I want the do 😊 You look awesome.

OP you would look lovely with any style.

Anatidae · 23/07/2017 12:08

Yup. Went from waist length to a pixie crop in my twenties. Looked great, so easy to care for.

Only downsides are you need to get it cut, and cut well, frequently. My hair grows like a weed and I found if I didn't have a cut every six weeks I ended up with a mullet.

I grew it out eventually and had it chopped again at 30. Now it's long because I jut can't be arsed with the maintenance

Spudlet · 23/07/2017 12:10

I do this every few years. Grow it, get fed up, cut it off, keep it short for a while, get fed up, grow it, repeat. I'm currently in a short period. Do it! It's fun! And it'll grow back.

Have you tried doing the thing where you gather your hair as though for a low ponytail and short of hold it back so it looks a bit like a bob in the mirror? I do that often. Gives you an idea of what you'll get.

burntoutmum · 23/07/2017 12:25

Me!

Went from waist length to just above the shoulder about 2 months ago, brilliant decision! Easier to wash/dry, can wear it down without it getting in the way.

My hairdresser was wincing cutting it, asking me not to cry! Grin

My only regret was not being organised to have it sent away to be made into a wig for cancer patients

Comealongpond89 · 23/07/2017 14:02

Can I ask how you go about sending it off for cancer patients? Also would they accept it even though it's dyed?

OP posts:
LockedOutOfMN · 23/07/2017 14:31

Comealongpond89 There are different charities who will accept different types of hair i.e. dyed, grey, etc. If you look on their websites, they will probably explain what they can take. I know the hair has to be gathered together (usually a plait fastened at both ends with a hair elastic) and clean and bone dry (if not dry it goes mouldy in storage). Your hairdresser might be able to advise too.

There are also some charities that will take hair that can't be used for wigs and use it to clean up oil spills and things. Have a Google.

SukiTheDog · 23/07/2017 17:29

I think you'd suit a "straight" cut. What about one of these. So easy to style if you've straight hair...

I'm definitely not brave enough to go that short just yet! Maybe long bob to start with lol

Yes, may be a bit ambitious!
