Have you had your colours done?

How accurate is it and is it worth the money?
Is it possible to do them yourself?

Anybody like to have a go at 'doing' me? Grin

I am
Fairly tanned/olivey toned skin yeah I know, skin damaged
Dyed mid- blonde hair (used to be mousey as a child)
Dark Blue eyes
Red cheeks if hot, but mainly olivey.

OK, so I did an on-line quiz and it said I'm a Summer. Confused which is all cool tones, but I would have thought tanned/olive was more Autumn/Spring which are warm tones?

Help.

Have a look at this website and in the menu choose shop by colour and then look at each of your seasons. The one you like the best has a fair chance of being your season and even if it's not then at least you would be wearing clothes that go well together.

IfYoureHappyAndYouKnowIt · 22/07/2017 19:44

It's well worth the money and generally very accurate.

Casmama · 22/07/2017 19:44

Also, how do you loomin coral and khaki? I a, a summer and look like a corpse in those colours so if they suit you then I think spring/ autumn are more likely.

Casmama · 22/07/2017 19:45

Look in and I am

JudyBlumeForever · 22/07/2017 19:46

I think it was around £100 to have mine done. Definitely worth it for me. They just dropped me in different colored scarves and suddenly I could see the difference that some colours made to the redness of my face, the brightness of my eyes, how washed out I looked in black, etc.

It means that I now know which colours look amazing on me ( especially teal which is never worn before) so when I go clothes shopping I save so much time as I can disregard whole racks of clothes as I know their colours won't suit me.

OhTheRoses · 22/07/2017 19:49

It's to do with your skin tone. I am brown eyed and tan with an olive complexion. Like you I get pink cheeks.i had mine done hears ago and was a summer.

I can't wear anything with a yellow undertone. Soft white is better than cream. Navy better than black. Reds and greens need a blue rather than yellow base. Emerald is fab, lime is awful. Can't do beigè, brown, anything orange though coral can work. Khaki is hideous.

If made a huge difference. Blues, greens, Heathery colours and pinks all work. Pale blue is good and turquoise. Soft grey with those colours as accents works. Can get away with black.

Oh and silver not gold.

I found it helpful. Pinkish lippy rather than corals, russets made all the difference.

Imstyledilemma · 22/07/2017 19:49

I know that teal and 'marl blue' look good on me. Orange does as well.

But doesn't teal look good on everybody? It's one of those universal colours.
Teal, True Red, Egg Plant and what's the other one?

Camel looks horrible on me.

OP posts:
Imstyledilemma · 22/07/2017 19:51

Oh the roses, all those colours you mention are the same for me, expect for orange.
Orange, especially burnt orange looks really nice on me [confused'
Maybe I'm summer with hints of Autumn. Is that possible?

I know I can't wear pastels.

Olive skin is usually (but not always) cool toned, so more likely to be a winter or summer. Your natural hair colour will help too - did it have any red/gold tiny or highlights to it when it was its natural colour? If not it's probably cool toned.

Imstyledilemma · 22/07/2017 19:54

I found it helpful. Pinkish lippy rather than corals, russets made all the difference.

that's confusing.
You say that you can't wear orange clothes and that coral can work, but makeup are the rules different? Confused You say that russets make all the difference.

I love pink, especially coral and deep rose pink.

Imstyledilemma · 22/07/2017 19:58

So I need a cheat sheet to be going on with, until I can afford to have the colours done,
so,
I have olivey/tanned skin that's prone to redness and mid blonde hair.

If I wear red, should it be an orange based red, or blue based red?
What type of blue can I get away with?
Can I wear pink? If so, which pink?
If I wear navy, which navy is best?

OP posts:
OhTheRoses · 22/07/2017 20:01

I'm probably expressing it badly. I can wear a pinky coral colour. I do not wear orange but am not sure if I could - feel I can't.

Lipsticks are best in a pink hue on me. I used to wear ones that were not strictly pink and they weren't great.

Just go onto pinterest....loads of tips and ideas on there

Imstyledilemma · 22/07/2017 20:06

It's fascinating.
I was watching Joanna Lumnley on her India programme and she looked fantastic in everything she wore.

She seems to know which colours suit her.

Look here pick the ones you like the look of and that might help you narrow it down.
(I don't suggest you buy any as you can get much cheaper till you are sure you are going for the right colours.)

Casmama, that's the quiz I did.
It seemed to be mainly based on personality, so I'm not sure how accurate it is.

OhtheRoses,
You should try Rose Gold jewellery.

Like you, Yellow Gold looks horrible on me. Silver looks better. But I can get away with Rose Gold.

BroomstickOfLove · 22/07/2017 20:13

I did myself by reading up, and then trying on various clothes and lipsticks. I'm pretty sure that I'm at the pale end of soft summer. Mousy hair that's a cool dark blonde with warmer natural highlights, pale cool skin, grey/blue eyes. No real drama or contrasts in my colouring. I tried on some warm and cool tones lipsticks and discovered that misty blue-grey, misty seafoam greyish green, misty dusty pink and taupe really, really suit me.

bunnybleu · 22/07/2017 20:13

I think to get sure you need to have them done 'professionally'. I would have said I was an autumn, I gave green eyes and red tones in my hair but I'm actually a summer! They say you are often instinctively drawn to 'your' colours and for me that was true.....blues, duck egg, purples....think of Monet's watercolours and that gives you an idea of the summer palette.
The other thing to remember is that within a season there are different types, not all summers suits the same shades. So I was an anemone summer which is quite mid toned, I wouldn't look good head to toe in the pastels, for example.

Casmama · 22/07/2017 20:26

I don't mean do the quiz- just pick the colours you like the best out of the four seasons

Intransige · 22/07/2017 20:37

I had it done twice. Colour Me Beautiful got it wrong, House of Colour got it right.

On balance, I would say self-diagnosis is likely to be safer. I already kind of knew what suited me.

The colours you're describing do sound like summer (which I am). I can wear corally red but not bright orange. Many kinds of dusty and cool pinks look good. Many kinds of muted cool blues look good. I look disappointingly good in head to toe pale pink. I cannot wear any kind of yellow without looking ill. My neutrals are navy, off white, and taupe.

There are a few ways to check. OnTheRoses has a good list.

Also check turquoise (warm greenish blue) vs jade (cool greenish blue) is a good test. Springs usually look amazing in turquoise and summers look amazing in jade, but terrible in the reverse. Teal is a warm blue but it's very close to a dark jade which is cool, so it can be a bit confusing I find.

Another good check is cream vs white vs off white. Cream is a spring/autumn colour, bright white is winter, off white is summer.

TheDowagerCuntess · 22/07/2017 20:54

Olive skin is usually (but not always) cool toned, so more likely to be a winter or summer.

Wow, this is a revelation - I always thought olive skin is usually warm toned?! So autumn or spring.

I tan immediately in the sun, although lose it in winter. I have dark brown eyes and brown hair. I have never had my colours done, but always just assumed I was an autumn. I can look good in some oranges, so assumed that was it.

Maybe I'm wrong though. I also assumed I leant more towards cream than white because of my (I thought) warm colouring, but actually cream doesn't always look that good.

I think my under-tones are definitely more yellow than pink. I've recently discovered that blue looks great on me, which was a surprise.

ForSaleChesterDraws · 22/07/2017 20:56

I had it done. It was definitely worth the money and has paid for itself several times over as it helps me avoid buying clothes that just never seemed quite right. It actually makes shopping far quicker as I can ignore whole displays which are in colour palettes that don't suit.

TheDowagerCuntess · 22/07/2017 20:57
