Have you had your colours done?

How accurate is it and is it worth the money?
Is it possible to do them yourself?

Anybody like to have a go at 'doing' me? Grin

I am
Fairly tanned/olivey toned skin yeah I know, skin damaged
Dyed mid- blonde hair (used to be mousey as a child)
Dark Blue eyes
Red cheeks if hot, but mainly olivey.

OK, so I did an on-line quiz and it said I'm a Summer. Confused which is all cool tones, but I would have thought tanned/olive was more Autumn/Spring which are warm tones?

Help.

Sorry, yes, meant to say olive skinned.

To me, olive skinned people usually have yellow/warm undertones, so to learn that they're usually cool seems counter-intuitive to me.

I am going on Pinterest and can't really relate to any of the celebs they're using as examples for any of the sun colours, even though my colouring isn't unusual at all.

MrsPestilence · 23/07/2017 21:34

Try this one for simple colour analysis.
Also agree about stalk a celebrity the same colours as you. Not easy as many dye their hair and wear contacts.

EvelynWardrobe · 23/07/2017 21:46

I think the pp who said that olive skinned people are cool toned was wrong.

OhTheRoses · 23/07/2017 21:52

I'm I've skinned and a summer.

Hairq · 23/07/2017 21:58

Re: olive skin being cool toned - it often looks really sallow in warm toned clothing but just tanned in cool toned clothing. Try it. My best friend has olive skin, dark hair and brown eyes and looks stunning in winter colours but really drab in anything autumnal.

Hairq · 23/07/2017 21:59

Likewise, pale skin doesn't necessarily mean that you're a winter - I have pale skin, dark hair and predominantly cool green eyes, but my skin is yellow toned,
Making me an autumn.

OhTheRoses · 23/07/2017 22:00

Me too.

Tw1nsetAndPearls · 23/07/2017 22:09

@MrsPestilence according to that link I am an Autumn but I don't look like an Autumn person.

Haffiana · 23/07/2017 22:11

MrsPestilence Thank you thank you for that link, which contains a palette of exactly the colours I wear best and which I have always been drawn towards.

Now I know I am a Cool Winter!

OhTheRoses · 23/07/2017 22:13

Link says I'm an autumn too. Hmm. Not according to House of Colour in 1991 I wasn't and what a difference that made. With age I do need softer colours though.

EnormousDormouse · 23/07/2017 23:01

Thats a great site MrsPestilence. I've tried several before and just got very confused but from that I am a soft summer, most of my clothes are from the palette shown Smile

LillianGish · 23/07/2017 23:41

I had it done years ago with a group of friends - a woman draped different swatches of colour around us and you could see straightaway that some colours looked much better than others - flattering skin tone or bringing out the colour in the eyes. I was actually quite sceptical about it at the time, but was amazed by how obvious it was who was what. I'm a Spring - I was already naturally very drawn to some of the shades, but the session showed me other colours which would suit me - some that I'd never considered wearing before - and also colours which wouldn't suit me at all. It completely changed the way I shop, I can now entirely disregard anything that is not in my colours and I can honestly say I've never made any mistakes with colour since having it done. Note that it only applies to colours worn next to your face so I can wear a black skirt or trousers for instance, but never a black sweater. My daughter is exactly the same colouring as me and she's always amazed how I can instantly tell her whether a colour will suit her and I'm always right. I'm not sure how you could do it online though - you need to see how the colours look against your face and what they do to your skin tone.

TheDowagerCuntess · 24/07/2017 03:13

I'm beginning to think, after all this time of assuming I'm some sort of autumn, that I'm actually a deep winter (medium brown hair, dark brown eyes and olive skin).

Which means all those gorgeous colours that I've sort of avoided, might actually be right for me.

Minimammoth · 24/07/2017 03:43

I agree with Lillian, you have to see the drapes against your skin. It's impossible to work it out logically. Your skin tone ( blue or yellow) is better judged by a trained eye.
IMO well worth the money, saves time and money shopping.

NigellasGuest · 24/07/2017 06:46

Yes - I was surprised to learn I am a winter. I'm blonde & blue eyed and was naturally drawn to summer colours but the winter palette makes more sense and yes it saves time and money.

Mrsmartell08 · 24/07/2017 06:47

I'm a deep winter too
Amazing that it's the colours I'm drawn to although i have made mistakes with brown/beige over the years!!

MrsPestilence · 24/07/2017 10:04

Another site reasonable agreement with the previous one.
I think I am muted Autumn; pale warm skin (with pink highlights in hot or cold weather), mousy blond hair with ash and honey highlights (plus a touch of grey), eyes the colour of unwashed biker denim (cheers DH).

user1955 · 24/07/2017 10:31

Hi NigellasGuest. I'm a blue-eyed, blonde Winter and was surprised by it as well. I had my colours analysed about 25 years ago by CMB and came out as a warm spring, but never took to it. The HoC consultant found me hard to place, but got there in the end. I don't think the freckles helped, as they seem to warm me up, despite the very pale, cool skin. I remember sitting looking at the seasons wheel before the session started thinking I could imagine myself as any season except winter! I did wear a lot of winter colours before, but am still drawn to more summery shades when out shopping. I still haven't fully got the knack of identifying the difference unless its a perfect match to a swatch in my wallet.

What shade of blonde are you? I've coloured my hair for many years to cover the grey, but it is quite a honey blonde, which is wrong apparently. I haven't had the courage to alter the colour yet as I'm not sure what to go for.

NigellasGuest · 24/07/2017 12:27

hi User - after my consultation I changed from honey blonde to ash, and I love it! Just ask the hairdresser for a really cool blonde. Unless you do it yourself? In which case I can't really advise....
Good to use those purple coloured shampoos and conditioners that help prevent brassiness btw.

Imstyledilemma · 24/07/2017 13:52

I've spent most of the morning going through my clothes and have made a few discoveries.

Looks good:

Off-White
White
Charcoal
Light grey
Any top that has white in the background and looks really crisp and fresh
Purple
Aubergine
Deep Wine
Light Red
Deep red (towards scarlet)
Turquoise (blue and green)
Teal
Greens look good (except lime)
Blues suit me, especially petrol blue, but not
light/baby blue.
Peach
orangey/brown.

Not so good:

Warm Pinks
Cream
Pastels
Beige
Camel
Cerise

It's surprising. To look at my skin I look like a typical autumn - golden/olivey/but most of the colours that suited me were, I think, Winter? With maybe a few autumn colours.

I'm a mystery.

I can't work mine out either. I have mousy brown hair, or possibly medium ash brown. My eyes look darkish grey unless the light hits them and then they look jade. Skin is beige/yellow undertones (I think!) but I go very pink/red when I'm hot. My foundation is Bobbi Brown Warm Ivory, if that helps! I can't see a celebrity on there who has the same colouring as me - they mostly seem to have brown eyes!

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 24/07/2017 16:18

I think I'm soft autumn. I have spent the last hour and a half reading all the different descriptions, though!

Mrsmartell08 · 24/07/2017 16:32

Off white doesnt look great on a winter
Certainly doesn't on me
I'm deep winter and I suit;
White
Grey - light to charcoal
Black
Bright jewel colours like emerald and ruby
Navy

No pastels or brown

I've always hated pastels and brown just doesn't suit me. I've just got rid of my last pair of beige linen trousers!

Just going to go through my coats and jackets now!...

BroomstickOfLove · 24/07/2017 16:43

If you are soft and unsure about whether you are autumn or summer (and it's really hard to tell by just looking) a simple way is to try on lipsticks.

You won't be able to find all of the ones listed, but it gives a good indication. I'm fairly obviously soft, but the summer/autumn distinction wasn't clear until I tried on mauve and coral lipsticks and looked elegant in the mauve and like a clown in the coral.

nevergooglenevergoogle · 24/07/2017 16:45

I had it done almost 3 years ago now as a birthday treat with House of Colour. I swear by it.
Without it I was properly clueless.
I don't think an online guess would have been anywhere near as useful as the analysis is much more than that. You find out your best neutrals, how to add colour in a way that works, and also which are your best colours (that you could wear top to toe) and which are best as accent colours from your palette.
Worth every penny and has saved me loads in avoided mistakes if that makes sense.
Do it!
