How accurate is it and is it worth the money?
Is it possible to do them yourself?

Anybody like to have a go at 'doing' me? Grin

I am
Fairly tanned/olivey toned skin yeah I know, skin damaged
Dyed mid- blonde hair (used to be mousey as a child)
Dark Blue eyes
Red cheeks if hot, but mainly olivey.

OK, so I did an on-line quiz and it said I'm a Summer. Confused which is all cool tones, but I would have thought tanned/olive was more Autumn/Spring which are warm tones?

Help.

House of Colours want £140 Shock
and from what I gather, it's not even one on one. You have to attend a class.
I think I will continue with my DIY detective work

I just wanted to say thanks styledilemma for starting his thread - it has been a complete revelation for me, on the discovery that I'm not an autumn after all (have never been drawn to those colours, and always been disappointed when I've gone ahead and bought them, and not been happy with how they've looked on me).

I bought an emerald green top yesterday with definitely blue undertones and wore it today, and have had so many compliments.

I love my new colour palette and can't wait to gradually replace my wardrobe with all these amazing jewel colours.

I now even know which lipstick shade is my neutral, after persisting with nudes and peachy shades that just didn't do anything for me.

Thanks!! SmileFlowersWine

My understanding of the theory is that if your skin has a yellow undertone, you will need blue based colours that provide balance ( bauhous colour theory) if you skin in blue based( I am classic Autumn, pale pinkish blues skin) I need yellow in the palette, we can all wear a version of red but some need blue based reds and others yellow based. I would be good in a tomato red, look awful in fustian pink, but good in coral. Getting your skin tone right is key,. Cover your hair if it's dyed, it's a complete distraction. I had my colours analysed over 20 years ago it was in a group of 4, a dyed blond was told to cover her hair whilst the coloured silks were matched, she looked fabulous in winter, and was advised to let her hair go to silver, it would have been fab on her.

Minimammoth · 25/07/2017 06:58

Sorry if I am repeating what has been said upthread.

PhyllisWig · 25/07/2017 07:03

I had it done a couple of years ago with house of colour and am a paintbox spring. I am a pretty neutral skin tone with grey eyes and mousy hair so wasn't easy to 'diagnose' initially.

I struggle with it tbh. My best colours haven't been fashionable for years- chocolate brown for example so hard to find in the shops. It's hard for me to tell if some of the strong colours which I'm meant to look for are warm or cool which means I have colbalt blue and emerald which aren't quite right. I have quite an unfussy style and like plain and fitted shapes so whilst I do like colour, lots of bright colours together look silly whereas if I were a bit more fluid they might go better.

So whilst I can see the advantages, I have not found it great for me practically speaking.

userblahblahwhatever · 25/07/2017 07:10

I love what a difference colours can make to how you look and how once you know your colours you will pick clothes on colour rather than style!

Like others I naturally gravitate towards 'my colours' and realised over the years what suited me and what didn't.

I'm a clear winter. I was sure I would be autumn as I have very dark hair and green/blue eyes with medium skin. Never saw myself as winter at all, though always knew I couldn't wear beige and that I suit bold, bright colours!

InigoTaran · 25/07/2017 07:25

Wow those pics of celebs in wrong vs right colours are really striking!

www.truth-is-beauty.com/light-spring-celebrities.html

I'm a bit confused now, I had my colours done over 15 years ago and I was a bright Autumn. I like my colours but I had chestnut colour hair then, with pale, slightly reddish skin and pale blue eyes. I'm now blonde, as my hair has gone grey and according to that website, I'm actually a light spring!

Minimammoth · 25/07/2017 08:10

I guess as we age our colours mute a bit, so Spring and Autumn are both based on a yellow pallet, you could easily move into a different scheme as skin changes. Whereas summer/ winter are blue based. And then you have the overlappers in between, I had a friend who could literally look fabulous in any colour, the companies all have different names for these.

InigoTaran · 25/07/2017 09:19

This is an easy way to discover if you suit warm or cool colours, using gold and silver jewellery

Have now diagnosed DD, who's 7, and am sure she's a soft summer.

Finding this really fascinating.

Feawen · 27/07/2017 09:33

I haven’t had my colours done but am thinking about it. I’m fairly
sure I know my best and worst colours but there are loads in between that I can’t decide whether they suit me or not.

I have very dark brown hair, emerald green eyes, pale skin with deep pink lips and cheeks, and the veins on my wrist are a blue-purple colour. I think the green eyes are a bit confusing though – most pictures of green eyes are a blue-green or have lots of amber in them, while mine are a very decided dark green colour.

My worst colours are coral, orange, yellow and yellow-green. My best are grey, grey-blue, rose pink, blush pink and white. But there are lots of shades of blue, green, purple, red etc, where I can’t decide whether they suit me or not. Anyone want to hazard a diagnosis?

InigoTaran · 27/07/2017 10:53

You definitely suit colours that are more blue based than yellow. Maybe a winter?

TheDowagerCuntess · 27/07/2017 17:00

Feawan - are you Scarlett O'Hara?!

It sounds like you're a Clear Winter.

Have you had your colours done?
Feawen · 27/07/2017 18:01

Hah! Fortunately not, Dowager, as I'd never pull off a dress made from curtains ;)

I think clear winter must be right. I don't wear most of those colours. The yellow would clash with my rosy cheeks though Blush

TheDowagerCuntess · 27/07/2017 19:05

Some of those colours would look amazing on you, though.

Go onto pinterest and search for clear winter colour palette, clear winter celebs, and clear winter style/outfits.

Intransige · 27/07/2017 19:20

Feawen is it bright white or off white that suits you best? If it's bright white, and you look great in black, then I'd guess winter. If it's off white and you look better in navy than in black, then I'd guess summer.

InigoTaran · 27/07/2017 19:24

Something that really struck me from looking at those pics of celebs wearing the wrong and right colours, is that when in the wrong colours, you really notice their clothes and make up, but in the right clothes, their actual beauty is highlighted. Does anyone know what I mean?

Feawen · 27/07/2017 19:31

How did 'I'd wear most of those colours' turn into 'I don't wear most of those colours'? I draw the line at taking fashion advice from my autocorrect! I absolutely DO wear most of those colours (except the yellow).

TheDowagerCuntess · 27/07/2017 21:01

Feawen, I'd look at some of the Deep Winter colours too, as I bet some of those jewel colours would look stunning on you.

Feawen · 27/07/2017 21:26

I will take a look! I think I will go to John Lewis or somewhere for a big trying-on session and try some of the bolder winter colours that I wouldn't normally pick. The amethyst purple shade from the clear winter pallet is beautiful, and the cool red too.

Imstyledilemma · 27/07/2017 22:47

Is there an online place where you can have your colours done? Upload a photo or something?
I assumed somebody would come to your house, or you would go to theirs for an hour, but apparently it's in a classroom setting, and you all get a 'turn' where everybody - (strangers) 'critique' you. Shock
No thanks. I would rather shove a pineapple up my ass sideways
I'm not paying £130 to go to 'school'
I would want a more personal (private) experience.

I bet they lose a lot of custom because they only have one method of delivering their service and not everyone suits that particular way of teaching, some people prefer a bit of privacy. especially if you're not wearing makeup and are sat there looking like shit

OP posts:
TheDowagerCuntess · 27/07/2017 23:27

I would google. I'm sure there are lots of individuals offering a private service, it's just knowing how good they are.

Imstyledilemma · 27/07/2017 23:36

I'm going to buy/make/download a colour wheel, with soft colours on one side, bright on the other.

Then I'm going to take a photo of myself in a good light, cut it out and plonk it in the middle of the colour wheel.
That'll tell me if I'm soft or bright.

I'll work my way onwards from there.

Once I have a rough idea, I'll raid my wardrobe for some clothes that can double up as 'swatches' to drape against me.
