Isn't she just fabulously stylish and cool for a 64 year old.

As a 50 year old, what can I do to try to emulate her ?

What's factual about comparing women (of any age) to cuts of meat?

ProjectGainsborough · 14/07/2017 10:10

Wish there was a like button for that comment Floisme.

Melanie dresses for the role and she looks great. Yes, she is married to Trump but she looks great. I know she was a model but her style is appropriate for a First Lady. Michelle Obama always dressed for the role, too:

FauxFox · 14/07/2017 10:17

I think Melania always looks too trussed up and stiff (though it could just be embarrassment due to her leathery orange accessory...)

Macron looks very stylish and confident but often I can't help thinking of Austin Powers Goldmember when I see some of her looks...I think the vintage style she favours suits her figure but it verges on a 'theme' at times...

Michelle Obama has a wonderful sense of style that means she looks great but it's understated enough to let her ideas, opinions and intellect be more impactful than her clothes.

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 14/07/2017 10:41

It's a turn of phrase flo - I'm sure it's google-able if you don't know what it means.

Floisme · 14/07/2017 10:43

Thank you but I do know what it means. Do you?

provider5sectorzz9 · 14/07/2017 10:55

I don't think she looks especially youthful, she has a slightly hunched old lady posture, signs of sarcopenia (age related muscle tissue loss) her face doesn't look aged but she will have had work done, her hair looks unnaturally full and the tan isn't flattering imo

provider5sectorzz9 · 14/07/2017 10:57

Why do we use cuts of meat metaphors to describe women trying to appear younger than they are?

Is there a corresponding phrase for men?

provider5sectorzz9 · 14/07/2017 11:01

I can only thinking 'the oldest swinger in town'
not quite the same but still a disparaging phrase used to describe an older man trying to have the lifestyle of a younger man when all around view him as 'past it'

OCSockOrphanage · 14/07/2017 11:43

Not particularly enamoured of Mme Macron's style. It looks obvious and a bit bling although it's better since she eased off channelling Johnny Hallyday. Every Paris fashion house must be keen to dress her, and I hope she tones it down a bit more. Carla Bruni was more elegant, imo, and Melania and Michelle also get it spot on. However, I agree with provider5 she's slightly too slender, much too bronzed and needs to calm the hair down. A less naked grasp at youthfulness would be more confident and dignified.

Madamfrog · 14/07/2017 11:49

Brigitte Macron is a normal woman who worked as a lycée teacher until recently and has had several children. Both Melania and Carla Bruni were models and are much younger.
BM's job required using her brain, engaging with teenagers and getting results and the other two had jobs dependent purely on their looks and how photogenic they are, so I don't think we are comparing like with like if you are comparing BM and those two.

provider5sectorzz9 · 14/07/2017 11:53

The tanned blond look is very 1970s to me
Mind you I'm very nostalgic about the 1970s 😊

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 14/07/2017 11:53

I think you are a little bit harsh there, Madamefrog.

Every single job out there requires the use of brains, you cannot dismiss women because of their looks.

LemonBreeland · 14/07/2017 11:59

I hadn't really seen anything of her, but I think all of her skirts are too short for the formal settings she is in. I don't think she looks that great.

Floisme · 14/07/2017 12:05

I think though that, unlike the other women mentioned, Macron will be reaching the stage when your body can start going a bit crumbly. I'm just a few years behind her and I recognise the early signs in myself. She'll be dealing with changes that Melania, Michelle and Carla haven't even dreamed about yet. I'm not a massive fan of Macron's look (apart from the principle of clothes with more structure) but I'm not sure about these comparisons.

nina2b · 14/07/2017 12:20

Today 11:49 Madamfrog

And the other First Lady I mentioned - Michelle Obama? She hadn't been a model and she certainly has a brain but she was elegant and tastefully dressed while in the role. No doubt, she still is elegant and chic.
BM is wizened and orange and blingy. Ugh

nina2b · 14/07/2017 12:22

I agree also about the skirts being too short. Doesn't she have a stylist?

Madamfrog · 14/07/2017 12:24

Chardonnay "I think you are a little bit harsh there, Madamefrog.

I'm dismissing nobody because of their looks - but being a fonctionnaire d'Etat has nothing to do with looks, it is an anonymous competition involving lots of essay writing and then a viva, being a model has everything to do with looks. There may be plenty of intelligent models but their intelligence and academic attainment aren't a requirement for the job!

Madamfrog · 14/07/2017 12:27

Anyway everyone can dress as they wish, can't they? I think a lot of criticism of BM is just ageism in disguise. Also she is a shop window for our designers so she probably wears different things in private. If I look half as good at her age I'll be happy.

ppeatfruit · 14/07/2017 13:49

Yes of course they can, wear what they want to, it's tricky if you're continually in the public eye of course. You can't be too sensitive , the papers\magazines are so insulting about everyone . (just watching the defile in Paris).

Mdme Macron looked a bit fed up and uncomfortable. I didn't like her suit but that was the design, she looked better at the election.

aniceearlynight · 14/07/2017 13:59

'BM is wizened and orange and blingy. Ugh'

Lot of internalised misogyny on this thread and that's what's 'ugh' - not Mme Macron.

LoadsaBlusher · 14/07/2017 15:07

I thought her skirt was too short regardless of age of wearer .

The length of Melanias was much smarter and more elegant .

MercuryMadness · 14/07/2017 16:08

I agree that BM looks very retro chic which is fine as an occasional thing but does start to look like fancy dress after a bit.

She has a very French look: slim, tanned, and that slightly taut look from too much smoking and cosmetic surgery. All my friends French MILs look the same.

Breezybreeze · 14/07/2017 16:13

Agree floisme.
But also bleuughh to fuelling the general media assumption that a woman's worth is primarily tied to her looks.

I know this is s and,b but ffs who are these women, what do they stand for, how are they using their public platform interests me far more than their clothes.

WinifredAtwellsOtherPiano · 14/07/2017 16:19

"Engaging with teenagers" is one way of putting it.
