Are skinny jeans going to be "in" forever?

tobee · 13/07/2017 16:09

Are they still in? I quite like them and they suit me ok but they seem to have been in forever! I'm sure I heard about 5/6 years ago they were out, but they don't seem to be. Just idly wondering.

Also cold shoulder tops, dresses etc have been around for a while but now they are here with a vengeance. Feels like designers are in a bit of a rut. I suppose I mean high street rather than Paris/Milan etc catwalk.

I bloody hiope not because i'm sick and tired of trying to find normal jeans/trousers...we're not all stick thin!

ShesAStar · 13/07/2017 16:25

I keep thinking the same thing about skinny jeans, they're starting to feel like a classic shape rather than something that goes in and out of fashion. They must have been the trending shape for about 15 years. I wore them when I first met DH 14 years ago. Most styles would have gone out of fashion and almost be due a comeback in that time!

mintich · 13/07/2017 16:28

I want long boot cut back in fashion, they make me look skinny!

Ecclesiastes · 13/07/2017 16:31

No way. We'll look back at the current Max Wall silhouette with disbelief and horror in a few years' time.

PuppyMonkey · 13/07/2017 16:31

I hate these super skinny versions that are so prevalent these days. A few years back, you could get skinny jeans and they were skinny but still felt like they were loose enough not to show the shape of your knee cap or etc. Nowadays it's all super super skinny, even the ones that claim to be "relaxed skinny" - terrible for those of us with knobbly bits to hide. Grin

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 13/07/2017 16:34

A 'mega trend' can last 20 years, so this would be skinny jeans. Normal trends last about 7 years, so cold shoulder tops etc. Skinny jeans will certainly go out of fashion. I would say they are on the downside of the trend curve.

Dunno what will replace them, although l suspect it's Mom jeans which will do it.

Flofferton · 13/07/2017 16:35

They won't be in forever but they won't disappear anytime soon either. All the hippest women I see about are now wearing a more relaxed style of jeans. Slim mom style? (stupid name but you know what I mean)

Flofferton · 13/07/2017 16:36

Remember when Kate Moss first started wearing skinny jeans back in 2003 or whenever it was, it looked so new and edgy! Grin

WhattheChuff · 13/07/2017 16:37

I was wondering this the other day. I've seen more 'spray-on' style jeans lately but still a lot of skinnys.
Also, are ballet flats here for good too? They seem to have been around for years.

MeltorPeltor · 13/07/2017 16:43

They're so practical to wear in the rain, I remember many days being sat in class at college with soaking wet flared jeans!

AuntieStella · 13/07/2017 16:51

Skinnies will be around for as long as people want to show off boots.

And I don't see jeggings vanishing any time soon either.

Yes, I think they are a classic, unfussy shape. I didn't buy jeans at all from about 1991 to 2011 because they vanished (no, that's wrong, one pair of the narrowest straight-leg I could find)

What is a pity is that the basic jeans shapes are not around all the time - skinny, straight , boot cut, peg (or is that 'boyfriend' these days?)

I think it shows how clothes vendors really don't offer much choice. They like the spending cycles that go with things being in an nod out of fashion and periodically unavailable. Pity.

EdithWeston · 13/07/2017 16:52

"It looked so new and edgy!"

You should have seen how I looked in the 1980s! So glad to see the clock turn back in the 00s to something I really, really like.

tobee · 13/07/2017 16:57

Whatthe ballet flats drive me barmy! They look terrible on my square, wide feet. In fact nearly all shoes I see have to be pointy which are incredibly uncomfortable for me. Bring back squared off toes!

tobee · 13/07/2017 16:59

Meltor that's very true. I'm old enough to remember getting whip lash from my flares as a 70s child when they'd got wet from walking through long grass after rain. Grin

SapphireStrange · 13/07/2017 17:01

I hope so. I love them.

I feel like they keep trying to bring back boot-cut, 'boyfriend' jeans whatever they are etc, but skinnies just won't go away!

burnishedsilver · 13/07/2017 17:03

They're on the way out.

Floisme · 13/07/2017 17:28

I think everything dates eventually - even classics come and go. Jeans stay around longer than most trends because when they change it's a whole new silhouette e.g. with different tops and shoes too. It can take ages - i.e years - to happen and then one day you put them on and thnk 'nah' and that's it.

WhattheChuff · 13/07/2017 17:48

Ballet flats were a bloody godsend as heels crippled my feet. I tried so many times but I just bloody hate them. I was over joyed when they became so numerous!
I do miss boot it from the 90's - they were really flattering on me. Hid my meaty calves...Blush

WhattheChuff · 13/07/2017 17:48

Boot it? Boot CUT jeans...

JemimaCuddleFuck · 13/07/2017 19:48

I believe ballet flats are here forever. There was a thread on here a few months ago where some posters were slagging them off but they weren't the type you'd accuse of ever being stylish. Some included links to the type of flat shoes they preferred, and my Mum would consider them too frumpy and she's pushing 70 Grin

I own ballet shoes in just about every colour and a zebra and a leopard print. I love them.

Flofferton · 13/07/2017 19:53

Ballet flats are a bit tired looking. A safe but dull choice like Breton tops and Converse.

Lucked · 13/07/2017 20:22

I bought my first pair in 2005 so 12 years now. I can see them going for at least another 5 years.

My first pair were amazing and from topshop, no Lycra so impossible to get on but proper denim which did no go baggy or budge. Most jeans are more like jeggings now.

secretsignal · 13/07/2017 20:36

Ha! I live in Breton tops and Converse. And skinny jeans. I am very dull.

eurochick · 13/07/2017 20:50

I think we are ready for a new shape. The problem so far has been that the shops haven't pushed a trend that is flattering to the average woman to replace them (mid-calf flare anyone? No, I thought not).

Ktown · 13/07/2017 20:55

It is the weather: boot cuts absorb water from the pavement and by capillary action my knees get wet.
Skinnies plus or minus boots means no wet knees.
