Older women do often smell fabulous. Have been spending time in hospital waiting rooms lately and invariably they are the interesting smelling people. Some breathtaking orientals being worn during the daytime. I imagine there are fabulous collections on some of those dressing tables...

I remember my Mum having a bottle of Aqua Manda and a couple of little scent bottles she kept in her jewellery box which we were occasionally allowed to sniff. I suspect these may have been gifts from her mother and had fabulous things from the 50s and 60s in them.

SirVixofVixHall · 05/08/2017 23:18

My mother would ring up James Craven and get stacks of samples sent to her. She loved perfume. When we buried her I wore her Diorissimo and covered her coffin in scented roses and lily-of -the-valley.

Mrsmartell08 · 05/08/2017 23:25

That's so lovely vix Flowers
I was chatting to a lady in lush the other day - we are similar ages - and we were talking about first ever perfumes as children.
Hers was violets
Mine was Bronnley forest fern
My sister had Lilly of the valley

Mrsmartell08 · 06/08/2017 10:17

Sotd is cashmere again.
Apparently it's a dupe of EL sensuous nude??
I don't think so! No coconut at all.

IWantToSmellLikeAMemory · 06/08/2017 10:32

That's lovely Vix.

I don't have any negative perfume memories either, of my Mum or my grandmothers. Emeraude, Caleche, Je Reviens, Miss Dior original...etc etc.

In fact the only negative perfume memories I have are of Tresor (as I mention often Grin being worn by a woman in an office in the early 90s, White Musk and Dewberry (surely the forerunners to the PMs of today?) and Creation by Ted Lapidus which I adored and wore during a very ill fated fling with a very wrong person.

I am knackered- bloody new group of kids jet-lagged and so up at 5.

Am in vintage Dioressence to make me feel better.

Azzuree was on my list of things I need to try, and has now gone to the top of the list!

Mrsmartell08 · 06/08/2017 12:05

Ha!
Yes
Dewberry and white musk - ALL my peers wprr this in 6th form
I wore obsession
😁

34AQuid · 06/08/2017 12:52

Afternoon all.

Lovely hearing your perfume memories, people!

Thanks Vix on the samples offer front. I'm mainly lusting after vintage Guerlain or Dior of any description or any of the Annick Goutals I don't have (currently have Quel Amore, Petie Cherie, Songes, Eau de Sud, Rose Splendide and Neroli) , but haven't got my confidence up with Ebay bidding yet after a couple of disasters, so if you come across anything you think I'd like, do let me know and I will return the favour.

SOTD is Lancome Mille et Unes Roses. Inoffensive, airy rose and amber. I reach for it when I'm being indecisive Grin.

Dewberry and White Musk...God, yes, school days! The Bodyshop ruled!

I started wearing Poison at 15, though, after my childhood sweetheart twisted his mum's arm in to buying me some in Duty Free. I thought I was so sophisticated. I used to drown myself in the stuff, too Shock.

IWantToSmellLikeAMemory · 06/08/2017 12:54

Oh oh oh! I have just been and bought a Lemon purse spray! (and some Zoflora Grin ) I feel I am well and truly a Daughter of MN now (after almost 14 years here under various guises I ought to be!)

I love it! (the Lemon) Still only 20 minutes in, so the lemon is still strong and the chypre twist hasn't arrived yet, but it somehow reminds me of old Fidji (or at any rate of suntanned people in holiday resorts)

explodingkittens · 06/08/2017 16:29

SOTD is Annick Goutal's Heure Exquise. First AG I've tried and I'm not sure; I don't think I'm sophisticated enough for this one! It's a very 'grown-up' scent but is erring a bit too much on the powdery side for me. Quite easy to wear though, so I expect I'll give it another go.

Interesting about the Body Shop fig perfume calm - might have to give that a whirl as I have absolutely fallen in love with Philosykos but can't justify the price.

34AQuid · 06/08/2017 17:25

Ooh Heure Exquise, exploding! Can't believe I'd forgotten about it.

I love the first powdery, Iris, green phase of that fragrance. The dry down not so much - I found it a bit harsh and dry.

I must revisit it some time.

Currently in a roast dinner coma and considering a bath and a spray of Mitsouko Grin.

lasttimeround · 06/08/2017 18:12

Talk of fig up thread had me reaching for premier figueire extreme today. It doesn't last long on skin but I like it on clothing and in hair. It's a lovely dry fig. Great Sunday perfume. Figs remind me of my best holiday moments - same as orange blossom. Hot Mediterranean places with glimpses of sea. Lovely.

I didnt like the body shop white musk or dewberry and can still identify them at 100 paces. But I did drench myself in the vanilla they did back then. I must have smelled like a cake.

MrsCocoa · 06/08/2017 18:27

The eBay vendor of Maggie and Sid fame has now sent me some L'Heure Bleue and Vetiver Insolent, so these are SsotD (left and right arms - not layered Smile). Nice to smell the L'HB top notes (sadly shot in my vintage bottle) - I want to try current and old side by side. VI is a very pleasant boozy, aromatic Vetiver (without the annoying carrots of TF's, cooler Grey Vetiver).

The vetiver was research for next Saturday's workshop. Perfumistas Assemble!

MrsCocoa · 06/08/2017 18:33

Too many refs to AG and fig not to put a shout out for the wonderful Ninfeo Mio. Best fig ever.

Grin at IWtSLaM. Glad Lemon didn't disappoint.

Have to confess I was stood in front of a shelf of Zoflora yesterday thinking, 'now, which one did they recommend...?'.

SirVixofVixHall · 06/08/2017 18:45

I LOVED old L'Heure Bleue, it made me feel slightly sad, but in an Autumnal sort of a way.
34AQuid- I have some pre-reformulation Diorella and Diorissimo, but I think they are slightly past their best. I only opened the Diorissimo a year ago, but it has lost something already. Will happily post you some though, if you want to contrast them with the new versions?
My first perfume was Apple Blossom, I can't remember who by? Also something by Avon in a glass bottle shaped like a squirrel. Then I progressed to this s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/9d/e9/67/9de9671ecee8ee89469ba64b00691231--perfume-tempo.jpg And this a133.idata.over-blog.com/4/55/66/69/Parfums-miniatures/Eau-jeune-l-Orientale.jpg Loved both of those so much! Then I think I had some Charlie, and onto my first serious scent, Diorella at about 16.

Mrsmartell08 · 06/08/2017 18:45

Zoflora..i like the spiced Apple one

SirVixofVixHall · 06/08/2017 18:49

I have a problem with fig scents. I absolutely love them, but I am allergic to wasp stings, and so in the Summer, when one might want to wear a lush green figgy thing, I am afraid to in case I'm like a huge living jampot for wasps!!

CheapTarnishedGlitter · 06/08/2017 19:32

Don't think I have anything figgy... not sure I'm that tempted either - will have to find something entry level and see if I "get it"!

Today started with Sexiest Scent. Very lovely - like Molecule 1 should be I think. Can definitely smell the Iso E Super but with something else nice that's just missing from Molecule 01. Shame it lasted about an hour Sad. Just smell of DSs bubble bath now!

MrsCocoa · 06/08/2017 19:39

Helena Rubinstein SirVix ?

By coincidence was talking to my Mother earlier and she said her first ever perfume (when she was a teenager) came in a very beautiful frosted apple shaped bottle. Have been googling and I think it might've been Nina Ricci Fille D'Eve?

Judydreamsofhorses · 06/08/2017 20:31

SOTD is JHAG Mad Madame - I think I am getting the cold as I feel grotty and can hardly smell it.

My first proper perfume after Body Shop stuff was Miss Dior. My mum wore Opium when I was a little girl, and my dad used to always get her some for Christmas. I can remember her telling me when I was older that she had gone off it a bit and wanted a change, so I persuaded him to get her Chanel No 5 instead.

IWantToSmellLikeAMemory · 06/08/2017 21:24

Vix- I think you and I compared lists of old loved perfumes on a "perfumes from the past" thread a while back- your list is ringing a bell with me.

I also had Apple Blossom- which my Mum made me throw away as it gave her migraines but which is now on my ebay search list waiting for the right moment. Ditto Heaven Sent.

There were so many Zofloras in Savers (obviously I only also went to Savers because of the numerous recommendations on MN to go and have a rummage!) I was bemused, but opted for Bluebell Woods as I had been reading this morning that Princess Diana's first perfume as a teenager was Penhaligon's Bluebell. I may get some of the other varieties too- I am preparing to ship some packages back home this week so will tuck in lots of Zoflora too!

My colleague was admiring my vintage Dioressence aura this afternoon Grin

Mrsmartell08 · 06/08/2017 21:26

I went to town and doused myself in addict
😁👍

IWantToSmellLikeAMemory · 06/08/2017 21:29

Judy- my stepfather was the same with my Mum- she has always been a perfumista (who knew Grin) and he would always get her Miss Dior for birthday and Christmas saying "this is the one you want, isn't it?" and my Mum would say "oooh lovely" then say to me "I wish I could have something else"

IWantToSmellLikeAMemory · 06/08/2017 21:33

Vix! I just clicked on your first link- I sooooo coveted Eau Jeune- my friend Paula had some and I loved it. Today's Lemon purchase, I have to say, is not dissimilar.

SirVixofVixHall · 06/08/2017 22:54

Oh I'm going to buy lemon right away then! I've bought bottles of Eau Jeune from ebay as it seems to be made in Spain still, but not the same smell, sadly. I long to smell it again.
Yes we did compare lists a year or two ago I think? I'm v envious of your pre-reform Dioressence. That was gorgeous.
I would give anything to smell the other Diors long gone, by Edmond Rouditska - Diorama, and Diorling. Dior Dior was still around when I was a teenager, I remember liking it, but can't quite "picture" it in my smell memory! I read years ago that Diorama was supposed to smell like a field of jasmine in full flower...

Chestervase1 · 06/08/2017 23:16

Estée Lauder used to do a mint pick up Bath foam in the 80s which was gorgeous. I also loved all the old Estée Lauder perfumes, Alliage, Estée, Private Collection, Azuree were all so beautiful. After the 70s and 80s they all changed. I also liked Safari by Ralph Lauren and the original man's Ralph Lauren Polo in the dark green bottle. Also Caleche by Hermes and Calandre by Paco Rabanne. Feel really nostalgic now.
