The old Chloe was indeed lovely.
They were selling Vanderbilt for £5 in tkmaxx the other day...I so nearly bought one!

PassiveAggressiveFloofiness · 05/08/2017 13:40

I'm sure I am being extremely dense, but what does the LVEB refer to, with the jam dipped baby?

PassiveAggressiveFloofiness · 05/08/2017 13:58

Sorry MN just crashed so my post disappeared! Sirvix I found the 4160s, to my untrained nose, smelt similar initially but then really grew on me as they developed.

I don't drink anymore as unfortunately applied the same obsession to it that I now have for perfume Wink but I do like smelling like a giant walking mojito with a bit of Virgin Island Water.

Talking or shoehorning in VIW, I too have experienced The Snooty Chanel Staff teta (hello again btw!) Recently was pointedly ignored by one who kept casting Snooty Looks at my hair. Was very irritating as I actually wanted to buy a big bottle of Allure with birthday vouchers Angry I had been very excited as I can't afford Chanel normally these days and it did take the shine off AngryThe next sales assistant was lovely however and gave me lots of samples of a £186 perfume (I think it was a Creed one. Too manly for me).

Excited that you like the Addict 3, my PP version hasn't arrived yet but the Poison note is interesting, one of the main reasons I wanted it was because someone said it was similar to Hypnotic Poison which i adore. And baa baa anyway Grin

SirVixofVixHall · 05/08/2017 14:03

Paris 1948 has now ended up smelling like Rive Gauche on me. Ughh uggh uggh. Reminds me of being car sick as a child when my mother wore it. (She didn't wear it for long, thankfully...just that one bottle, as I would always be carsick if she had it on..) I want to know more about fragrance composition so that I can narrow down what it is in this, Rive Gauche and Lou Lou that triggers such intense nausea in me!!
I know I like stoned fruit notes, and amber, and sometimes leather. I need to narrow down my searches.
After Dd1 was born DH treated me to a session with Roja Dove, in his amazing scented palace in Harrods. We went through lots of perfumes, all un-named. and in the end got to (the old, this was 2005) Miss Dior. He said he knew I'd be a "chypre" person as soon as I walked in! (Although it was between Miss Dior and Mitsouko and the only reason I didn't choose Mitsouko was because I felt it was too heavy for me, rather than not loving it).

The lovely James Craven of Les Senteurs suggested Nuit de Noel for me, has it been discontinued now?

Mrsmartell08 · 05/08/2017 14:30

Vix...if you like peach try ET diamonds and rubies (peach and rose)
It's £10 for 100 mms on amazon!

Mrsmartell08 · 05/08/2017 14:38

mls

SirVixofVixHall · 05/08/2017 15:09

Don't like ET diamonds, sadly, as it is such a bargain! Not at all keen on rose scents, although there are exceptions.
I just tried the "Who Knew?" supposedly a rose for people who think they don't like rose. Loved it at first, thought I'd found something to buy a fb of, but now it has dried down to the familiar sweet, sickly smell that I associate with the 4160s. Anyone know what that note is?
I find there are whole houses (such as Creed) where there is a familiar "something" in everything they make, that I don't like. With others, Guerlain for instance, I like all the older scents,( although not Shalimar, which I like on others but not on me) but then really hate all the more recent ones. Ditto Chanel and Dior. I like pretty much everything from them pre 1980 and then loathe everything else, including all the tragic modern replicas of the old greats. Then there are other houses like Annick Goutal where I like almost everything. I don't know enough about perfume to understand why this is, other than it made perfect sense to James Craven that I didn't like Creed, given what I did like ifyswim? !

Mrsmartell08 · 05/08/2017 15:16

I'm not a rose fan usually - I would say I like skanky rose :)

SirVixofVixHall · 05/08/2017 15:33

I really love the smell of actual roses though, my garden is full of them. As flowers I also love Mimosa, lily-of-the-valley, pinks, carnations, jasmine and violets. Somehow rose scents seem to have the smell of that " perfume" I used to make as a six year old, by brewing petals in bottles of water.......Grin

34AQuid · 05/08/2017 16:18

Floof - let us know your verdict on the Addict PP! If its good I might buy a nice big bottle, as I can't keep spending my shekels on perfume like this Grin.

Vix - thats so funny, I also can't stand Rive Gauche because of car journeys with the windows up after my mum had liberally doused herself in it. The memory alone makes me feel nauseous and migraine-ey.

I also found all the 4160s a bit samey at first. There is a sort of incense vibe with quite a few of them - The Sexiest Scent, Tarts Knicker Drawer, the City ones. Not sure what the note is, or whether Sarah uses a Guerlinade-style base concoction ? Keep the samples and come back to them in a few months time, though. You might surprise yourself. I despised Ealing Green but a year later came back to it and really liked it.

I'm also a Guerlain and Annick Goutal sucker. Most of the offerings from those houses are 'loves' for me.

But..I'm a complete sucker for rose in anything. When I can't be arsed with 'proper' perfume I reach for the Bodyshop atlas rose perfume or rose oil in the bath. I bloody love ET Diamonds & Rubies. Another mrsm winning tip for me Grin

34AQuid · 05/08/2017 16:19

p.s. just wiled away 2 hours at the bowels of hell soft play by reading the Fragrantica notes for every Guerlain perfume ever. That, my friends, is how you 'do' soft play Grin.

Mrsmartell08 · 05/08/2017 16:20

😁👍

SirVixofVixHall · 05/08/2017 16:29

34AQuid- yes migraine-y and nauseous. That is exactly how it makes me feel. The old Lou Lou used to make me retch..I couldn't stand near someone wearing it. Sadly the 4160s I've tried so far seem to be having the same effect on me.
I did keep some old 4160 samples from a year or so back, but still don't love them. Sad. Although I smashed one (Rose unicorn thingy?) on my bathroom floor , and my bathroom smelt just lovely for about a week.

SirVixofVixHall · 05/08/2017 16:30

34A, if we like similar things, then let me know if there is anything you are longing to try as I might have a sample somewhere!

IWantToSmellLikeAMemory · 05/08/2017 16:46

Vix- if you love old Vent Vert and Ealing Green, don't be bamboozled by Amazing Green as it's rubbish.

OCSockOrphanage · 05/08/2017 20:32

James Craven is a genius at working out on the phone what people like and why and making recommendations, sirVix. Not one of the first set of samples he sent was a total waste of time, albeit I seem to be anosmic to musk, so always dodge because I don't know when it's too much.

SirVixofVixHall · 05/08/2017 20:43

I used to go in to browse and chat with him, Les Senteurs was the only place in the UK that sold Molinard at one point, so I would trot into the shop to pick up my regular bottle. He was always so lovely! I haven't been in for ages as I've moved to the sticks.

MrsCocoa · 05/08/2017 20:54

My Azuree is here! Sadly the citrus top notes are compromised, but after the first few minutes it becomes a really animalic leather (had me looking for cumin in the notes, but perhaps it's just indolic jasmine. Brought Theo Fennell Scent briefly to mind), this fades quite quickly to a dry, woody leather (with frankincense; almost a leathery Sahara Noir), and the base notes are gentler and soapy (bit like vintage Ivoire?).

It's quite challenging to start with, and on the bitter side of things throughout, but fabulous stuff Smile. I want to try it side by side Cabochard (which I'm guessing may smell smokier, sweeter and more floral in comparison).

Judydreamsofhorses · 05/08/2017 20:57

SOTD was FM Hiver. I think I have missed a chunk of thread, but you can still get the old Chloe in the peach box in Savers here for about £12.

SirVixofVixHall · 05/08/2017 20:59

I loved vintage Ivoire, but I felt too young for it, and then it changed. Sad

SirVixofVixHall · 05/08/2017 21:03

I'm usually fairly indifferent to Estee Lauder, but have a fondness for Youth Dew bath oil. I had to get to forty though, before I appreciated it!

Mrsmartell08 · 05/08/2017 21:04

My mum wears youth dew

SirVixofVixHall · 05/08/2017 21:51

My best friend's Mum wore it too. It makes me think of her going off to a party. I don't feel it is "me" as a perfume, but I love the oil in the bath at Christmas. It makes the whole house smell lovely.

CheapTarnishedGlitter · 05/08/2017 22:17

Had a PP day today - started off with Italian Cypress which I really like but think it might be just a tad too masculine for me to carry off. Sprayed it on DH instead...
Moved onto Mandorlo di Sicilia. Sweet and creamy but lovely. Not sure whether to try the real thing or not... notes say bergamot but most reviews don't mention a lot beyond vanilla and almond...
Also keep looking at the various ET options on Amazon. Baaa!

Trying to think of any negative scent associations from my youth... can't think of anything. Either my mum was subtle and restrained (HA!) or I have some long buried issues just waiting to come to the surface Grin

Calminaqualm · 05/08/2017 23:02

I remember as a little girl helping myself to small dabs of my mum's Tweed perfume and feeling very naughty. It was a splash bottle which sat on her dressing table, and the smell was completely different to today's Tweed. Mum must have known what I was doing - apart from the level in the bottle going down, it must have been obvious from the scent coming off me!

Vix, Elizabeth Taylor's Diamonds and Emeralds has peach, apricot and white flowers. You might prefer this to the Rubies one.

Over the last week or two, I have:

  1. tested Diptique Philosykos against Body Shop Summer Fig. Unfortunately they are both short-lived on me, although the Summer Fig lasts slightly longer, maybe 3 hours rather than 2 🙁. The Philosykos is slightly more astringent than the Summer Fig, which is a tad sweeter. There's certainly not enough difference to justify spending ten times as much on the Philosykos.

  2. Enjoyed my PP Blackberry Bayz ( I bought a large bottle after testing the smallest size).

  3. Traced the gorgeous pungent smell in my shopping bag, a spillage from some time ago, to a sample of Montale's Intense Cafe. A strong rose and coffee, I should think a full bottle would last for years. You need such a small amount.
