Do you like primark?

I sometimes find a nice shirt / blouse and buy it but then you see that many people wearing the same thing too.
Do you shop in primark much?

OP posts:

I got a pair of jeans for a fiver yesterday. The straight leg cropped ones. Ok they're not going to last longer than the summer but for a fiver who cares?

I also always make a beeline for their silky viscose buttoned shirts. They're always very forgiving around the Mum tum.

I get a lot of my cheap 'n trendy jewellery there, for nights out. And pretty much all my sunglasses.

They do the best navy trousers for my work uniform. Literally everyone I work with wears their navy trousers. They're cheap and lightweight.

I don't like the dresses though as they're too short and too flimsy.

I used to work for Primark, i suggest you shop before 11 especially on a saturday as it will be quiet, tidy and easy to find items. Delivery and filling from stockroom would have been done too so all styles/ sizes will be out.

Floisme · 23/06/2017 10:10

I guess I'll be called sanctimonious but I can't pass any more without thinking of Rana Plaza. I know that's irrational when the whole of the high street stinks and at least they did pay compensation straight away, unlike say, Benetton. But Primark made their name as the public face of fast, disposable fashion which is what I'm trying (not entirely successfully) to give up. I know some people can't afford to pay more and this isn't a pop at them.

Eolian · 23/06/2017 10:14

I like them for kids' clothes, cheap accessories (make up bags etc) and plain basics like t-shirts. I don't go very often because there isn't a branch in my nearest town.

ThreeForAPound · 23/06/2017 10:22

It has its uses.

I go twice a year and arrive as soon as it ones to try to avoid the scrum.

Its good for undies, bras, sleepwear, socks.

Its my go-to place for cheap summer holiday clothes, flip-flops, cheap sandals.

In winter, I stock up on cardigans, hats/scarves/gloves, occasionally a jacket or coat, cheap ankle boots for casual wear.

I don't really 'do' Primark fashion, though. I don't find the clothes fit well on me (tall hourglass). Tops a bit shapeless, dresses and trousers too short.

ThreeForAPound · 23/06/2017 10:22

as soon as it opens

OhtoblazeswithElvira · 23/06/2017 10:35

I can't pass any more without thinking of Rana Plaza.

The vast majority of clothes you can find on the high street are made in developing countries - I wouldn't single Primark out as a particularly evil villain TBH. All clothes companies rely on very very cheap labour - the margins mean that it can only come from the third world. If we had to pay first world labour costs most clothes would become seriously unaffordable - think around a fivefold increase in price.

Floisme · 23/06/2017 10:39

I didn't, and I know that, as my post says. However - as I've also said - they set out their stall as the face of fast fashion so they can't complain if that's how people remember them.

user1483617032 · 23/06/2017 10:50

Floisme have a read of this- www.primark.com/en/our-ethics

Inkythemouse · 23/06/2017 10:53

I buy a lot of home stuff (bedding, towels etc) and my jeans from primark.
I also get some of my make up from there.
I find their kids clothes are quite small fitting which is ideal for ds2 and dd but not ds1

Floisme · 23/06/2017 10:56

I will read it but please will you also read my post again. I specifically stated that all high street ethics stink. I give Primark credit for being the first to pay up after Rana Plaza and for paying way more than any other store, unlike some such as Benetton, who had to be dragged, kicking and screaming into negotiations.

The reason I still single out Primark is because they were more than happy, in the good times, to take the credit as a world leader of cheap and disposable fashion so they can't complain if the label has stuck.

user1483617032 · 23/06/2017 10:58

Primark are proud of the fact it's affordable.

RebelandaStunner · 23/06/2017 11:03

To me it's false economy.

MyDressIsBold · 23/06/2017 11:07

Just been today on the back of this thread!

I went in for a white t-shirt for my son, came out with:

*white t-shirt
*selection of Harry Potter socks, which I really don't need - and what am I going to do with the Gryffindor / Ravenclaw / Hufflepuff ones? Grin
*Harry Potter t-shirt - the fabric isn't very nice but it will be useful for beachwear as I won't mind it getting trashed
*kirby grips as recommended above - they are in a little portable case which will be handy
*face wipes

glitterglitters · 23/06/2017 11:08

I like primark for a few things.

Statement pieces that i then lock away for a year (everybody is always asking where I got things and everybody else has worn theirs to death by then)

Heels (surprisingly comfortable!)

Strap tops/tank tops

Jewellery

Holiday shopping.

silkpyjamasallday · 23/06/2017 11:26

I've never shopped in primark as we don't have one nearby, I do occasionally see nice things they've made in magazines but not nice enough that I would travel to go in and rummage for anything.

applesareredandgreen · 24/06/2017 00:03

I go in there a couple of times a yeAr and stock up on the scoop neck stretchy T shirts, particularly the long sleeve striped ones. I've also had a couple of cardi's that have been ok.

hiccupgirl · 24/06/2017 07:51

I find it very hit and miss, bit like most of the high street tbh. I only go in on quiet times as I hate how busy and messy it gets.

I like their cotton cardis and the thermal leggings are brilliant. But I find their long sleeved tops and t shirts scratchy and always end up sending them to the charity shop after 1 wear. I used to get DS clothes from there but he hates dark colours and slogans and pretty much all their boys tops were exactly that this year.

user1495484765 · 24/06/2017 08:03

I only buy lounging around stuff, or belts, or some fitness gear. I rarely visit. The smell of plastic hangs in the air. It is messy. Occasionally I will see someone wearing something and ask where it is from, and they say Primark, and I am always surprised. Just looks like a mass of tat to me. I certainly do not agree that the quality is the same as the rest of the High Street. It is if you are comparing it to Peacocks but not most other shops.

Florence16 · 24/06/2017 08:27

I like their loungewear, some shoes and black tights. That's about it. I got a nice mac from there once for £25 which everyone used to comment on. Most things I feel aren't great quality and I like to get more use out of things. A dress or top from Primark would look knackered after a couple of months, but I have dresses from Next and a few sale Phase Eight ones that are going strong two years on. I feel like Primark is good if you like to wear lots of different stuff and to experiment. I'm the kind of person that buys a jumper for £40 and love it so much I wear it all winter!

ArieltheMermaid1720 · 24/06/2017 13:10

To the pp who mentioned the Harry Potter socks, thanks! Picked up some myself this morning along with a Harry Potter nightie Smile

SilentlyScreamingAgain · 25/06/2017 00:02

The clothes are alright and the quality of the t-shirts is no worse than Hush for instance. It's the Hunger Games at a jumble sale aspect I can't stand. I already have far too many clothes and I just can't bring myself to compete with those younger, fitter and with sharper elbows than me.

I might go back if I'm ever blessed with grandchildren, the buggy as a battering ram method of crowd clearance seems to be popular in my local store.

Vanillaisboring666 · 25/06/2017 00:04

The sizing is appalling .

Dailystuck71 · 25/06/2017 08:52

I can usually get some stuff for DS. Onesies in particular.

I like PJs for myself.

Bought beach towels for our holiday. Can leave them behind if necessary.

I've bought some cheap branded Disney and Harry Potter stuff for myself in the past. Other clothing would be a no as it just looks cheap so dresses, blouses, work stuff.

hippadoppaloppagorillapig · 25/06/2017 16:25

I like their footsie socks - they have a gummy bit at the back, so they don't fall off your foot. I also like their shoes, they seem to fit my weird feet well.
