What to wear for work when it's 32 degrees

My normal workwear is a pencil skirt and plain t shirt and cardigan with a jacket. I have a few nice dresses as well. I tend to wear opaque tights in the winter and lightweight tights in the summer as have not very nice veins on the back of one of my calves. I have a few longer non work skirts that I could wear so I could ditch the tights but they make me look dumpy unless I wear really high heels. This is bringing a new Sunday angst to the thought of going to work.

It's so difficult. I doubt anybody would notice/care less about veins though.

I'm finding it equally difficult. Keep looking at my wardrobe and sighing. I tried going shopping too, but could find anything even vaguely okay.

ProfessorHannigan · 18/06/2017 17:42

I've just gone with the dumpy look. Very few people look good in sweltering heat and most are so put thinking of their own sweat patches/sweet smell/hair ishoos/feet/aching veins etc.

Gruach · 18/06/2017 17:43

I keep consulting the weather app on my phone - and praying it changes its mind ...

NiceCardigan · 18/06/2017 17:54

When we had a really hot spell last year I just wore cotton dresses and didn't care about the veins as had a bit of a tan but am in a new department now and feel a little bit self conscious. It may have to be dumpy.

My non client facing team gave up last time this happened. Smart casual is the usual dress code but the guys were in shorts and I wasn't the only women in a (smart) vest top.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 18/06/2017 18:47

Unfortunately, we're quite corporate. I can get away with a cotton dress, but we have to wear jackets and cotton jackets are virtually impossible to find.

Moose23 · 18/06/2017 18:50

Is your office air conditioned? I wear my standard short sleeved ponte dresses (boden mainly) with nylon stockings. It's mainly just hot on the commute on the tube.

I do feel bad for the men in the office though, it's not like they can wear short sleeves or knee length shorts! It's one thing in the office that they have worse than us!

NiceCardigan · 18/06/2017 19:24

The office is air conditioned but the temperature isn't even across the floor and there are weird hot spots. We have floor to ceiling windows so it can get a bit greenhouse like.

Thankfully we're non client facing and our bosses are happy to let the dress code slide when it's absolutely boiling.

So tomorrow, I'm planning on wearing a smart maxi dress with sandals.

I feel really sorry for anybody commuting on the tubes/trains, been there done that and I do not miss it Confused
My DH is commuting into London and I suspect he'll be a sweaty mess when he gets home

BarchesterFlowers · 18/06/2017 19:37

I have unearthed a long navy linen skirt and am going to wear it with a printed linen sleeveless top with a Jackie o style collar (not sure of the name for it). Slightly less smart than normal - I have a few linen dresses that I normally wear but they are on the knee and my legs are so white they are blue this year.

Some of my linen dresses have silky linings (thank you Hobbs) which means I rarely wear them when it is boiling.

BarchesterFlowers · 18/06/2017 19:38

Me too Mrs re commuting into London, I did it for 15 years and you couldn't pay me enough to return.

NiceCardigan · 18/06/2017 19:51

I am commuting into London and there will be speed restrictions on the line due to the heat tomorrow so I can look forward to that as well.

No air con - my classroom is like an oven.

Chottie · 18/06/2017 19:59

No air con and floor to ceiling windows here too..... It is just roasting......

I will be wearing light weight cotton trousers, sandals, a 100% cotton blouse and will remain seated if Big Boss comes into the office.....

BarchesterFlowers · 18/06/2017 20:02

My office is in a Georgian building with an enormous window, 14ft square ish, spectacular view but greenhouse like - no fresh air let alone air con. It will be roasting.

Gruach · 19/06/2017 00:19

Speed restriction on the train?

So, so glad I declined all the Monday meetings.

I am longing for September.

MrsPringles · 19/06/2017 07:51

I plumped for this, the skirt is mid calf length and I'm already boiling Confused

I am so not meeting the dress code and I really don't care today!

I'm wearing a black shirt dress (corporate office) with tan heels. I feel quite cool as it's loose but still office appropriate. I've tried on tons though and everything was not quite right!!!

Cineraria · 19/06/2017 08:08

Unlined linen dress with short unlined linen jacket. I made that myself, though, and don't think unlined jackets are easy to find in the shops.

PacificDogwod · 19/06/2017 08:09

Unlined floaty linen skirt and smart t-shirt.
Thank goodness we have a v loose dress code which is mainly smart-casual.

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 19/06/2017 08:13

So jealous. I get to wear a nice thick polyester nursing uniform on a secure ward with all the doors locked so no through draft. Windows that open an inch, no air-conditioning and no fans due to infection control. It's horrific. Sad

Swearwolf · 19/06/2017 08:39

Nice skirt though! Where's it from? That's totally the kind of thing people wear in my office. I'm kind of stuck as I'm carrying 2 stone of baby weight and nothing fits, and my arms are the part I'm most self conscious about so sleeveless is out.

libertydoddle · 19/06/2017 10:04

I'm wearing a Boden Phoebe dress (on phone so can't link). 100% cotton, knees and shoulders covered so ok for the office. Thankfully jacket not needed. Wearing Merrell walking sandals for commute with some tan flat sandals for the office.

Fozzleyplum · 19/06/2017 13:30

Today, I'm wearing wide leg cream linen trousers with a thin silk shirt with the sleeves rolled up. It feels very cool although I'm not exposing flesh.

Monkeybunkey · 19/06/2017 13:37

I'm wearing shorts and a vest top (I work in Higher Education). There are so few people around now that the exams have finished, I couldn't face being smart today and have no meetings so am just in my office all day.
