Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. If you wish join us on this thread I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

If you pose a question and we need more contextual information to answer properly we may ask you to fill in the following form. Please only use this form when asked, unsolicited forms will be deleted. Responses to the form can be found here

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

MAY/JUNE 2017: It’s summer and some of us are hourglasses (and otherwise beautifully shaped) that desperately need to bitch and moan about the severe lack of clothes available to us. Also, some of us are recovering from a ‘fine’ butchering to our hair. Don’t ask. Some of us suffer from all of the above. At least the weather is good, wear sunscreen.

So glad you had good news Bo Flowers sounds like you've a great gyn at least.

Olliv, that look wildly alarming Shock glad you are on the mend though.

JDSTER! Your Niod cleanser arrived and flipping hell, it's really smelly! Thank god I don't have a huge bottle of the stuff. I tend towards functional skincare but it goes too far. I don't want to be offended by my face wash!

Mind you, everything disappeared off my face pronto. I took a flannel to it then, was never going to get it all off with just rinsing.

Thank yous o much for sending it though. I really appreciate it Smile

EnidButton · 11/07/2017 13:47

JD What did you ask for at hair salon? Did you say 'just a trim' or ask them to do something to the layers? I'm considering seeing if a new place will do just a fringe trim and a colour but wonder if a trim all over might help.

Skinfulnappies46 · 11/07/2017 13:56

Always great to hear good health news bo and olli. Your health is your wealth .

EnidButton · 11/07/2017 14:17

Yes I'd swop pretty much anything to have my health back. It's the most important thing. So glad you're both ok. Or will be very soon Flowers

yongnian · 11/07/2017 15:55

olli!!!!!!! What a scan! Jeepers....glad it's been caught and recovery still going well.

Ollivander84 · 11/07/2017 16:05

This is the other one - no prizes for spotting the bad disc Grin

EnidButton · 11/07/2017 16:08

Ouch!

yongnian · 11/07/2017 19:43

Shock I've got sympathetic back pain just looking at that!! Just to take your mind off it Grin what do you make of the pigments of Anastasia Beverley Hills eye palettes olli - any good? Tempted...

Ollivander84 · 11/07/2017 20:00

Yes! I have the modern renaissance palette and love it

yongnian · 11/07/2017 20:12

Ooh good...it's powder though is it? Do they do a cream texture so you know...?

yongnian · 11/07/2017 20:12

Do you know, even....

Ollivander84 · 11/07/2017 21:01

Yeah it's powder. Not sure about creams to be honest, I don't use many cream ones except maybelline colour tattoo

Pupsiecola · 11/07/2017 22:40

Hello,

I've been a little AWOL. Will try to catch up at some point. Hope everyone is fine and dandy.

I have a question though, concerning my eternal search for the perfect lipstick. In duty free at the airport a while back a sales assistant managed to sell me the following, which she said most people buy to use as a lipstick?! I must say, I can't imagine using it on the eyes - it's far too gloopy. But it does go really well on the lips and actually it's the perfect consistency and colour (the Beach Nude). It just gives a nice warm hint of colour and a soft glistening effect without being too wet and slippery. However, it doesn't stay on very long. Any ideas what I could try that may be similar (I realise this is a bit of a long shot). I have very full lips and I don't like anything bright or matte. I prefer something quite subtle.

JDSTER · 11/07/2017 23:39

wilting Grin yes it does have a certain aroma doesn't it. I promise it hasn't gone off, that is how it smells! At least you've tried before you've made the investment.
enid I have a hairdresser who comes to the house and has cut my hair for years (I go to a salon for colour which is how I ended up with dodgy layer) I just explained what happened and could she even it out. She just trimmed the back which had meant the top layer doesn't now look as short. My hair grows pretty quickly.
bo I'm not having brca genetic testing, I'm not eligible according to current guidelines but they'll offer me mammograms (which we wouldn't get in U.K.until you're 50).
pupsie do Bobbi brown not have any lip products in a similar shade? I've got a gloss from BB I love in 'buff' but not long lasting. Dior had some nice lip glosses in a thin silver tube that looks like a lipstick (sorry don't know name of product) I tried quite a nude colour today and it lasted for ages, through lunch etc.

Ollivander84 · 11/07/2017 23:42

Did my first spin class tonight since my back problem started. Forgot my gel seat cover too. I'm not sure whether the inability to breathe or the lead legs feeling was the worst Grin

EnidButton · 11/07/2017 23:44

JD Thank you. I need to find someone like that. So much easier. My hair is growing very quickly might have measured it so I might see if they'll just trim the bottom to lessen the gap between them if that makes sense. Or chicken out and just get a colour and fringe trim.

yongnian · 12/07/2017 07:38

Ah ok, I watched some online thing of someone using it and it looked almost creamy on application but might just have been clever blending....the Anastasia eyeshadows I mean...

Pupsiecola · 12/07/2017 10:08

Has anyone heard of Sesderma? (Dr. Sam mentioned a product on a recent blog).

botemp · 12/07/2017 10:56

Well, it sort of depends on the type of texture, if skin has gotten noticeably thicker, duller and a bit loose, fine lines, etc than AHA is a good point to start following up with Vit C to boost Collagen synthesis. If it's more giant pores/blackheads than BHA followed up with Niacinamide may be the better option. If it's a bit of both then it's probably worth considering a combination BHA+AHA product.

The Hylamide SubQ eyes has some function but I think it's a temporary effect. The LRP Redermic R for eyes has been good for some on here and make sure to really get your sunscreen up and around the eyes too.

wilting, yes, she's fab and supposedly the best in the country, so I'm sticking with her. Have to thank you though as my bloodwork showed a remarkable improvement since introducing the Isonitol and ALA, could also just be down to the weight loss but my gyn. thought it definitely had an impact.

Very true, Skinful. Flowers for you Enid, I know I go on about my health and the inconvenience it causes in my life quite often on here but I know it's nothing compared to being chronically ill.

Speaking of eyeshadows, Olli any chance you've ever played with the Viseart ones? I like the little travel palettes and since they're based in Paris was planning to seek them out when I'm there at the end of the month. Considering the price, please save me the trip and tell me they're just ok.

Hmm, ime anything glossy and sheer just doesn't have great longevity, Pupsie. I don't know if the colours would suit but Chanel do these crayons (Nars has them too) that are glossy and stay on for quite a bit and they recently introduced a newer product that's supposed to set a bit which is more like a wind-up slim tube. Both contain a nude in the lineup but whether that's a good nude for you is another question. Ellis Faas creamy lips are also nice but quite pigmented but the packaging is so frustrating I can't really rec them on that basis- it's like playing Russian roulette with the wind-up mechanism and hoping you get the right amount, it's usually nothing or one giant blob. You could also try those Lipstick Queen ones that colour to your body temperature, same with the subtle gloss, a bit more longevity. One is blue the other green but they colour close to your own lip colour.

That's the Azelaic spray she recced, isn't it Pupsie? I was curious too, unfortunately, the shipping is more than the product unless you're spending over a €100. I think they're Spanish, anyone going to Spain by any chance?

Ollivander84 · 12/07/2017 12:02

I haven't but a pro makeup group I'm in really rates them. Sorry Blush

Ollivander84 · 12/07/2017 12:06

Apparently they can be used as a wash of colour or built up. Apologies for double post, am on horse and MN Grin

wiltingfast · 12/07/2017 16:20

That is fantastic Bo. I am pleased! I feel so much more energetic on those supplements. I've never really taken any before but they have been a total game changer for me. My weight is stable, my mood is stable, my energy is much much higher. I am so glad they have helped you too.

yongnian · 12/07/2017 20:15

For those of you using vit c...are you using it for
A: hyper pigmentation (like me - and therefore only in isolated patches)
B: antioxidant properties combined with your spf (in which case are you putting it all over your face?)
C: both of the above
D: None of the above (please say why you use it in this case)
E: drinking it (this is a joke. Although I do.)

I ask because I read something on vit c and antioxidant/sunscreen and have realised I'm missing a trick...so wondered what everyone else is doing with it.
Answers on a postcard except you olli if you're still on board your horse/spin cycle/other form of transport whilst mumsnetting...
In other news, Glossier will finally be shipping internationally/to U.K., on a rollout starting soon. There are a couple of their products I've wanted to try, so am quite pleased to discover this.

EnidButton · 12/07/2017 20:48

Thanks bo Smile

The spot on my chin has invited a couple of friends over which is nice for it but I'd like them to leave before Sunday. So I'm going to request a repeat prescription for Zyneryt tomorrow. See if that gets them on their way. Seem to remember zyneryt and then Cicaplast did a good job last time I had a cystic spot. Also decided to book in for a colour and a fringe trim but nothing else. As it's a new place. Leave a full cut for now.

Just thinking out loud really. Not much to report. Bought some more overpriced Hand Chemistry hand cream. It's very good.

Ollivander84 · 12/07/2017 20:53

I'm back Grin we did about 17km in 3hrs so pretty pleased
I use vit C all over as antioxidant and because the one I use is v runny and I cannot be bothered doing isolated areas!
