Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. If you wish join us on this thread I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

If you pose a question and we need more contextual information to answer properly we may ask you to fill in the following form. Please only use this form when asked, unsolicited forms will be deleted. Responses to the form can be found here

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

MAY/JUNE 2017: It’s summer and some of us are hourglasses (and otherwise beautifully shaped) that desperately need to bitch and moan about the severe lack of clothes available to us. Also, some of us are recovering from a ‘fine’ butchering to our hair. Don’t ask. Some of us suffer from all of the above. At least the weather is good, wear sunscreen.

Oh sorry, we're supposed to guess the ages too, my bad!

Erm 22 20 42. But really; impossible to guess, they look like triplets!

botemp · 09/07/2017 14:23

Nul points for Bali. Maybe skinnies look really good on goat legs, I shall amend my exceptions Halo

Should probably also amend that I have no issue with slim fit jeans (which a lot of skinnies sold these days technically are, skinnies as a marketing term just sell better but a lot of skinny jeans aren't really skinny jeans).

I got a request for access to one of the new sheets so think I messed up the sharing settings. I hope it's fixed now and accessible to everyone, let me know if it isn't.

Laughing out loud at goat legs GrinGrin

Ollivander84 · 09/07/2017 16:23

I am being good and wearing biore everyday. For my body I'm using the banana boat aerosol because rubbing on sun cream around horses means I have a fine layer of dust/mud/hair stuck to me
My vitiligo is becoming much more noticeable, oddly it's only on my hand and hasn't ever spread

botemp · 09/07/2017 17:59

Goat in Skinnies™ Grin He can be Puss in Boots' emotionally disturbed cousin. Crazy stalker eyes and everything.

Olli, you're supposed to guess...

Come on lurkers I'm sure you all don't have crazy stalker eyes, here's your chance to join in on the thread without any commitment, and just think if you guess the mum and the ages right you'll be an instant legend on this thread for whatever that is worth.

Mum on the far left? 45, 22, 26?

EnidButton · 09/07/2017 18:18

I cheated googled and had guessed who was the Mother correctly but not their ages. HOLY SHIT!! ShockShock

botemp · 09/07/2017 18:21

Shh Enid!

Now more actual guesses, please, as Olli is also on nul points.

Am getting far too antsy not to reveal, don't ever share major secrets with me.

BaliBound · 09/07/2017 18:24

So mum is in the middle then? If I was wrong with right, and Olli was wrong with left.

So now for ages.... Confused Um..... 26, 48, 28?

GoatinSkinnies has quite a ring to to, for t could be my next name change....and I love Puss in Boots Shock

Skinfulnappies46 · 09/07/2017 19:35

olli your hair..wow! How do you get your curls so defined? I have curly hair also but recently got it chopped as hormones , I think had wrecked it! Now it is curling again, thanks to orgx Argan oil conditioner. What is your trick? ☺

Skinfulnappies46 · 09/07/2017 19:36

Oh and I'm going for mum on the left...48, 22,28

HolyShmoly · 09/07/2017 19:36

I love in skinnies and very slimfit, I won't have a word said against them (actually I completely get if they aren't your thing, but I love them. I will be happy to re-introduce some bootcuts though as I struggle to find a good skinny that will fit my abnormally large calves.)

I'll grab a photo of the ingredients when I go back upstair and post it. Thanks for sharing the suncream articles too. I'm just about getting over the 'but I live in the NE, surely I don't need suncream!' protestations.

Ollivander84 · 09/07/2017 19:43

Skin - I follow curly girl so no shampoo, no silicones, no drying alcohols. Mainly I use moogoo, shea moisture and cantu. Basically I like to get my curls crispy when dry Grin so I can scrunch that out and be left with soft curls

Skinfulnappies46 · 09/07/2017 19:56

Thanks olli, did it take long to notice a difference when you started curly girls? Do you plop etc?

Ollivander84 · 09/07/2017 20:00

A few weeks for me. I only plop for a v short time and use a satin cap as a t shirt creates frizz on me

botemp · 09/07/2017 21:09

Bali's clever deduction has spotted the mum in the middle... the ages are still way off. See Enid's double Shock for inspiration.

No offence meant to the skinny wearers. If you feel good and look it, I'm sure you do. This popped up on my suggested YT feed tonight and her meaningful pause and sigh before discussing skinnies sums up my reluctance too. They're not terrible (well the first generation where you had to lie on the floor tugging like mad to get them up, guaranteed muffin top even if you had 0% body fat and you needed someone else to help you out of them, were, but hey they were a sure step up from low rise jeans with a whale tail ) but I don't think they're the universally flattering thing people make them out to be and think the increasing amounts of elastic that have been added to it over the years have essentially turned them into leggings. Except on goats, obviously.

I need some new jeans. I managed to faint while walking home today (too much sun in the park, despite full cover clothing, hat & shades). Ripped the knee of my only pair of jeans. Sigh. At least rips are fashionable at the moment so I might get another few months out of them. Still gutted though - I've had this pair nearly a decade & they are so comfortable.

Am contemplating purchasing TO Azelaic acid. Will it help with my pink nose area? I have minor patches of visible capillaries around my nose & inner cheek areas, probably caused by 30 years of poorly controlled allergies & their natural consequences on my face! Also, I have tried BHA for my blackheads, nothing doing- I've read that Azelaic can help with that. I've got the Medik8 face wash on my list of things to try in the future for those as well though.

My skincare regime has been the same for about 3 months, BTW. Face ok, comfortable but not there yet. Still getting the occasional mild blemish. Mostly not bothering with foundation at all these days, just eyes & lips. (Woo hoo!)

cad186 · 09/07/2017 23:34

They all look like teenagers to me! But I'll take a more sensible guess given Enid's reaction. Say 30, 50, 32?? They don't look anywhere near that though.

mintmagnummm · 10/07/2017 06:35

Did anyone see my last two comments about the new avene spf?? I feel lots of my comments don't get acknowledged Sad

Bo they all look very young, and actually the one in middle looks the youngest Shock can u reveal yet?

botemp · 10/07/2017 07:17

Lego, don't try and join the fainters club, they're a dreadful lot I tell you! Hope you're feeling better now Flowers Yes if BHA isn't doing it for you, it's probably worth exploring Azelaic.

cad's guesses are still way off. Any more guesses?

mint, we're not ignoring you if you're simply announcing something by its very nature it means that there is nothing, in particular, to respond to.

MaryLennoxsScowl · 10/07/2017 08:22

I'm going for 35, 36 and 60?

Lego, have you tried niacinamide? BHA did nothing for me either (non-sensitive combo skin), but TO niacinamide & zinc made a visible difference from the very first day to the pores on either side of my nose. Haven't fixed the actual blackheads on my nose but they are much smaller.

I got azelaic acid recently but haven't been using it much, I couldn't see much difference - I was putting it on in the morning, and nia at night, so last night I put on nia first and then azelaic and night cream and it stung like mad! Nothing I could see online explained the stinging, they don't seem to be contraindicated.

RubyGoat · 10/07/2017 08:26

I am a terrible fainter. Low blood pressure plus the migraine meds I'm on can cause me real problems sometimes. Even worse in hot weather or when I'm stressed. When I was pregnant it was nearly a daily event, despite having to stop taking the migraine meds.

Right I will order the Azelaic. If it doesn't agree with me, I dare say someone will take it off my hands... Grin

RubyGoat · 10/07/2017 08:38

I've tried niacinamide previously. Dreadful enormous spots. None around my nose though, they were all on the areas of skin that doesn't have much in the way of visible pores, & no blackheads - neck, temples, apples of cheeks etc. I wonder if it might be worth trying it again, just very topically on my nose area?

Please could someone advise me, where exactly in a routine would Azelaic go, BTW? Is there anything it shouldn't be used with?

SheStoodInTheStorm · 10/07/2017 08:51

I've found you!!!

Had a break from MN (real life got in the way) and then couldn't find you. Did find you all on one of the previous threads but felt very out of the loop! Will probably lurk on this one. Love the title!

Not sure what the all clear is for, need to read back, but great news bo Wine

MaryLennoxsScowl · 10/07/2017 09:07

All the links around first cleansers are very timely as I've run out of mine (Una Brennan yellow oil cleanser) and it was fine but stung my eyes a bit so not going to repurchase. I like the look of the Merumaya balm but wanted to ask if I can do the clay mask/BHA/oil cleanser rub thing with it to try to extract blackheads/seb fils? That was why I bought the una Brennan oil in the first place but then never got round to buying a clay mask. Does anyone know? And can anyone recommend a clay mask, please? I have some hoarded BHA left even though it never worked on me anyway so maybe the mask routine won't either and I should give up on it?
