Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. If you wish join us on this thread I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

If you pose a question and we need more contextual information to answer properly we may ask you to fill in the following form. Please only use this form when asked, unsolicited forms will be deleted. Responses to the form can be found here

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

MAY/JUNE 2017: It’s summer and some of us are hourglasses (and otherwise beautifully shaped) that desperately need to bitch and moan about the severe lack of clothes available to us. Also, some of us are recovering from a ‘fine’ butchering to our hair. Don’t ask. Some of us suffer from all of the above. At least the weather is good, wear sunscreen.

I'd love a mantelpiece in my bedroom!

I had some teeny tiny white spots under my chin this morning which I blame on TTDO. Easy to get rid of though and my eyes aren't stinging today.

Ollivander84 · 26/06/2017 22:01

I have two spots Angry and my period showed up 5 days early
At least my hair looks good!!

EnidButton · 26/06/2017 22:05

Wilting Have you tried the Emma Hardie one? It's stupidly priced mind you. Or bo recommended I try the Merumaya cleansing balm, you could look at that. I haven't tried it yet but the ingredients look good.

EnidButton · 26/06/2017 22:05

Olli Weirdly I was thinking mine might turn up early this month. I have pmt symptoms. We're all syncing! ShockGrin

Ollivander84 · 26/06/2017 22:10

The merumaya is absolutely lush and is 15% off at the minute

wiltingfast · 26/06/2017 22:19

Ooo will go google Grin

JDSTER · 26/06/2017 22:23

olli I know you've listed silicone free shampoos and conditioners on here before but could you remind me which ones are good? Thanks

Ollivander84 · 26/06/2017 22:36

Superdrug - extracts conditioner + their noughty range
Boots - kind natured, shea moisture, most of the cantu range
Faith in nature + Jason stuff is usually safe too
L'Oréal - I think the botanicals + everpure/ever something(!) range is too
Moogoo

Pupsiecola · 26/06/2017 23:14

JDSTER I cannot recommend Pureology hair products highly enough. My wavy/kinky/unruly/dry-ended hair loves the stuff :-)

mintmagnummm · 27/06/2017 09:09

@Pupsiecola I have been eyeing up pureology for a while but am very anxious as it's expensive and my scalp is very delicate. My hair is a state though! Very coarse and wiry and dry but gets dirty very quick! Scalp gets itchy often too Sad

Pupsiecola · 27/06/2017 09:16

It is expensive mint. I buy the salon size ones online.

mintmagnummm · 27/06/2017 09:48

@Pupsiecola which one do you use? What's your hair and scalp like?

Tsmummy08 · 27/06/2017 11:00

Wilting which Botanics one has caused the issue? I've found some are amazing and some quite harsh...

I need to start writing things down - still searching for a decent summer SPF... I'd bought LRP XL SPF 50 Ultra light to use on sweaty/sunny days and it just rolls right off my face when applied - anyone else had this issue? I definitely need something else as, despite daily spf 50 and makeup, my face has coloured quite significantly Blush

Ollivander84 · 27/06/2017 14:09

Just ordered a new mascara. I googled for reviews and found this on Reddit and now my stomach hurts from laughing Grin

The regular version is bulletproof. It is immortal. It laughs at your feeble cleansing oil. Water and pressure only made it stronger. I had to break out my asian eye makeup remover to get it off my hand, and even then it took two rounds of it and a foam cleanser. I tried to remove it with my western cleansing oil and it ate it and asked for seconds. It would be my mascara of choice for a marathon viewing of Schindler's List followed by Bambi and Titanic. If the end of the world came, all that would be left is dust, Keith Richards, and Heroine Make Long and Curl regular Mascara. I can't imagine what the Super Waterproof is like, and I'm honestly afraid to try.

wiltingfast · 27/06/2017 15:39

Tsmummy, it was the blue one for dehydrated and SENSITIVE skin!!!

What are you wearing under your LRP? I don't have that issue. I do leave a couple of minutes for the other skin care to sink in before applying it though. Only a couple of mins. I do not have much time in the morning!

Tsmummy08 · 27/06/2017 15:44

Awesome review Olli - and it sounds like the kind of mascara I need in my life!

Wilting Is that the balmy cleanser that you wash off? If so I LOVE that one! Sorry it's not working for you :(

I've been using a silicone-containing moisturiser the last few days so it may be that, I'll try using my regular Ceramidin tomorrow and see what happens. I always leave 15mins+ before putting on my SPF (work from home) so my skincare always has the chance to soak in... odd!

botemp · 27/06/2017 15:57

Congrats on the move, Pupsie, at least I hope it's a positive thing and not solely on account of the evil 'PM' neighbour that's prompted it. Yes, definitely go for a dressing table if you have space, it's very soothing to just sit and take your time with things and have some direct natural lighting. I always have a box of tissues on the table for all sorts of purposes so have never found it to be a problem not having a sink on hand. Be mindful of storage, it stops working when you're overcrowding the workspace with pretty bottle displays that need dusting.

You were on Retin-A, right Tsmymmy08? That really does up the photosensitivity so if SPF is struggling to stay on and you're not topping up regularly it's not that odd that you're tanning quicker than normal. Are you oily skinned that you're struggling to keep the SPF on, for whatever reason in my memory you have dry skin?

Olli Grin, is that the Heroine one, then? I've heard it'll withstand days of swimming and the most humid of rainforests and still not come off. Think the Blinc brand are the same or similar, coming from the same factory. It's a tuber IIRC so warm water should lift it initially, although it's more troublesome than most.

Ollivander84 · 27/06/2017 17:31

It is the heroine one!

Tsmummy08 · 27/06/2017 18:16

Bo Yes retin-a and dry skin. I've been using the Bioderma top-up spray before doing the afternoon school run but I'm wondering whether the BS SPF 50 I've been using until trying the LRP recently, isn't quite giving me the protection they claim... Confused

My SPF routine is usually: Ultrasun 30 before schoolrun/jog (it seems sweat resistant but has a white cast so don't want to use it during the day).

Then it's BS (or previously Biore) SPF50 after showering etc applied generously; then, if wearing makeup it's Bareminerals.

Bioderma top up when I leave the house again mid-afternoon.

It's weird - I stayed out of the sun as much as I could during the hot spell we've had recently and have definitely been MUCH more careful with my skin in the last year. Clearly not enough!!

mintmagnummm · 27/06/2017 21:17

I'm not sure if the cosrx moisturiser is breaking me out Hmm arrrrrrrgh!!

mintmagnummm · 27/06/2017 21:18

I need a moisturiser that sits nicely under spf and make up in the am but is also nice for pm. I don't use any actives or serums etc so need a nice moisturiser ffs.

mintmagnummm · 27/06/2017 21:30

Shall I give face theory another chance?? My last cream from them was a complete disappointment it seperated in bottle then turned to oil! They are sending a replacement but this is second time I've had an issue with the batch so am very anxious as my skin is misbehaving.

JDSTER · 27/06/2017 21:44

tsmummy I had the same problem with the LRP spf. My face was like an oil slick by lunchtime- awful.
I'm loving Biore uv bright milk. Gorgeous texture on my skin, like an invisible primer.

olli I went to Boots today and got shea shampoo and conditioner (3rd off the range) and L'Oréal botanics 3 for 2.

I tried Dior lip tattoo that India knight was reviewing in style magazine yesterday. All of the colours were too dark for me but they're bringing out more shades next month.

Ollivander84 · 27/06/2017 21:49

I love the shea moisture but boots don't stock my favourite Angry which is the low porosity conditioner. Moogoo conditioner has been an absolute game changer for co washing though for me

vaz119 · 27/06/2017 23:16

mint I have been on the same plain /basic moisturiser hunt for ages!

I have been trying for almost a month now one that bo recommended for me. It's a Japanese one I ordered it on ebay. Tenshi no bihada is the name. It's a kind of gel/cream. Probably not at heavy as I normally use but seems to be moisturising really well. Makeup goes on fine on top. It was fairly cheap at around £14 for 80g. I've also been enjoying the superdrug hydrating pure serum underneath

Thanks again bo for the suggestion. I've not properly tried the tinted SPF 50 that you helped me with because I only like to test one me thing at a time for at least 4 weeks but had a wee try and it seems nice.
