Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. If you wish join us on this thread I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

If you pose a question and we need more contextual information to answer properly we may ask you to fill in the following form. Please only use this form when asked, unsolicited forms will be deleted. Responses to the form can be found here

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

MAY/JUNE 2017: It’s summer and some of us are hourglasses (and otherwise beautifully shaped) that desperately need to bitch and moan about the severe lack of clothes available to us. Also, some of us are recovering from a ‘fine’ butchering to our hair. Don’t ask. Some of us suffer from all of the above. At least the weather is good, wear sunscreen.

Hi, hope you don't mind a quick question - I've been lurking with interest here.

I've been enjoying using TO Vitamin C Suspension 23%

  • HA Spheres 2% which has run out for me now, and there seems to be no more available on the TO site.

Are the other 3 Vitamin C serums they do, listed below, any good/comparable? I got a little stinging from the 23% but overall noticed a good brightening effect.

Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate 10%, Ascorbyl Glucoside Solution 12%, Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate Solution 20% in Vitamin F

Thanks!

botemp · 03/06/2017 13:23

Welcome, Wtfdoicare! Personally, unless I couldn't tolerate the L-AA form I wouldn't bother with the other Vit C offerings from TO as derivatives are always less effective than what it's derived from. I think it's currently sold out at Asos too but Victoria Health or Beauty Bay may still have it in stock.

Wtfdoicare · 03/06/2017 13:31

Thanks loads botemp, I thought as much. I'll have a look at Victoria Health Smile. Also going to upgrade from TO retinoid to the retinol. I've been a long term retinol user for years so should be fine with the stronger one I hope!

Tantpoke · 03/06/2017 14:18

Woo hoo I'm so excited to finally be trying out the TO range.

What shall I try out first and how and when i.e. Am or pm.

I have a horrid rash on my face after being in the shower this morning and applying products no idea what's caused it so delighted to have these new products to try.

JDSTER · 03/06/2017 14:26

I keep looking at EPP but not sure what I should be buying? Was going to get Cartier mask. I don't need any LRP. Any suggestions?

EnidButton · 03/06/2017 19:07

Hello WtF have a welcome snail 🐌 Grin

Tant Nice little haul you have there. I can't advise but personally I would wait until tomorrow to start to give your skin time to settle a bit. Slowly slowly is my method. Others might say otherwise (and they'll know more than me).

So, I realised I was moaning about my appearance more than usual so I've had a self care kind of evening. Used body scrub, 3 types of body moisturiser, a hair treatment, painted nails, had a nutri bullet smoothie and will be using footner later. Feel much better.

Two empties to add to list although they aren't new to me.

Philip Kingsley Elasticizer, will continue to repurchase. Use it once a month to 6 weeks and I love it. (V.thick hair, wavyish, prone to dry tips of hair-for anyone wanting to try it).

Soap and glory sugar crush body scrub. Love.it. Proper gritty scrub with lots of oils. Best one available on the high street imo and I have tried loads.

Also later, footner. Another one on my permanents list. Bit of a faff but it gives you new feet. My feet aren't bad but it's still very effective and satisfying. Good for pre holidays but leave at least 3 weeks to give it time to finish peeling.

I'm stood on front of a fan waiting for my moisturisers to sink it. Beautiful mental image for you there. coz I'm so hot Grin

Hope you've all had a good start to the weekend.

BaliBound · 03/06/2017 19:13

Enid I'm so glad you've mentioned the Philip Kingsley Elasticizer, I've been contemplating getting it for a good few weeks. My ends are so dry at the moment I might grab some on Monday. I used the PK citrus swim cap whilst on holiday and it was lovely. My hair was so soft and smelt amazing.

Tantpoke · 03/06/2017 19:31

I got home, cleansed my face and after a bit of umming and ahhing, was tempted to leave it another day, but patience is not my middle name so I have applied TO retinoid 2%. No stinging so far. Not sure if I'm meant to apply a moisturiser over the top? Or leave it as is overnight

My plan is to use the OT niamacide in the mornings and alternate the OT Vit C and retinoid in the PM.

I'll start using the lactic acid once I know how the others are behaving.

I quite often use a hairdryer when my body moisturiser won't dry esp when the weather is boiling.

Pupsiecola · 03/06/2017 20:26

Tree these are the best vests I have ever bought. I have 4 I think, in different colours. Perfect for summer, and layering in winter.

Kettlewell Vests

Bo, thanks re the ultrasun SPF.

Just catching up. I'm in Edinburgh atm, so the other end of the country. First ever visit to Scotland!

userallusedup · 03/06/2017 20:34

Tant I was advised by the lovely ladies here to use TO Vit C in the morning as it's an anti oxidant and gives your SPF a boost. Works well for me as I can use it every day but I don't have any issues with it pilling under makeup though, deciem themselves said to use it at night when they emailed me a suggested routine so I'm guessing either would be fine.

I've never used lactic acid but my TO routine until recently was as below, sub q is from Deciem's hylamide range but everything else is TO.
Night 1 - 2% retinoid, az acid, sub q serum, natural moisturising factors + HA
Night 2 - niacimide, salicylic acid, sub q, NMF
Every morning - Vit c, sub q.

I've changed recently as now using TO 1% ret so morning routine is the same but I've ditched the other actives at night apart from niacmide until I see how my skin reacts to the ret.

JDSTER I mainly buy my beloved cicaplast from Easyparapharmacie but have also ordered my bioderma SPFs and the ecrinal cuticle treatment that Bo recommended from there. I forgot to report on that, it's a weekly treatment so did to being away I've only used it once but it did work well on my side cuticles/hangnails which is what I needed but still on the lookout for a really effective hand and/or cuticle cream to use every night.

MAY EMPTIES, TRIALS AND PLANNED PURCHASES

EMPTIES

TO Buffet - just don’t think I need it atm so won’t be repurchasing (maybe in winter).

Darphin Intral Serum - won’t be repurchasing (!). I love the smell but it’s very £££ and I’ve bought two new £££ products to try in the last couple of weeks.

TO Vit C - have repurchased (this is my third).

Facetheory Moisturiser - At first I had the M1, then I bought the M2 which is too thick. I might repurchase the M1 at some point but for now I’m using either LRP Redermic R or one in a blue pot whose name escapes me, or my body shop one at night and the Cosrx which has special mention below.

Facetheory Retinol - not empty but stopped using. Just don’t think it suited me. Can’t even exactly pinpoint why.

PRODUCTS ON TRIAL

Cosrx Oil-Free Ultra Moisturising Lotion - love.

Neostrata Retinol - I like this brand. It’s way more pricey than the Facetheory one but I’m curious to see if it suits me better.

NIOD Copper Peptide Serum - only used it once so far...

Bioderma Photoderm Max SPF50 - was on offer in Boots and I saw Dr Sam recommending it. I am looking for an SPF my teenage sons will also use without me nagging them to lol.

Hand Chemistry Intense Youth Complex Cream - I like this a lot.

PLANNED PURCHASES

None this month. Think I’ve spent enough lately!

SPECIAL MENTION

Cosrx Oil-Free Ultra Moisturising Lotion - I absolutely love this. It smells so fresh and is lovely to use.

Pupsiecola · 03/06/2017 21:12

Yes to Philip Kingsley Elasticizer; has changed my life lol.

EnidButton · 03/06/2017 21:40

Bali you can get a small tube of PK Elasticizer to try first if you like. 150ml £17. Still pricey but better than spending £30+ on it and finding you don't like it. Even when I had bra strap length hair I got a few uses out of the tube (4-5 maybe? I do have very thick hair though) I get mine from either Feel Unique or Look Fantastic.

EnidButton · 03/06/2017 21:41

Hand Chemistry Intense Youth Complex Cream - I like this a lot

This is the one I really like too. Have you tried it User? It's really helped my hangnails and dry cuticle sides.

EnidButton · 03/06/2017 22:04

Pupsie Like the look of those vests. 👍🏻 Thanks for linking.

JDSTER · 03/06/2017 22:18

pupsie remind me of your skin type please and could you link the cosrx moisturiser? Are you using morning? Good under make up? Thanks

JDSTER · 03/06/2017 22:27

tantpark. I use moisturiser after 2% retinoid and I have oily skin. It's pretty gentle but you may get some initial flakiness if you don't moisturise. I use Vit C in morning for added antioxidant effect against environmental/sun damage, followed up with moisturiser (LRP toleriane) then SPF. If you start using everything together you're not going to know what's working and if something doesn't suit you. Not everyone gets on with TO niacinamide.
Definitely hang fire with lactic with you just introducing retinoid. Patience my dear Tant Wink

EnidButton · 03/06/2017 22:40

Just seen your hairdryer tip Tant I do that too! The big tower fan did a great job today though. Even if my bum was freezing afterwards. Better than too hot. Grin

Ollivander84 · 03/06/2017 22:52

I have burnt Blush not my face, just my body a bit. I blame the neighbours daughter - I was at their BBQ and she offered me a woo woo slushie. Turned out to be about 99% alcohol and I had a bottle of wine on top

EnidButton · 03/06/2017 22:53

Olli!

Grin wtf is a woo woo slushie?

Ollivander84 · 03/06/2017 22:58

From what I can gather it's about 3/4 of a glass of vodka and peach schnapps with a teaspoon of cranberry juice and a teaspoon of orange juice blended with ice and yet more vodka to make a slush drink
(Those aren't the normal measures if you order it in a pub!)
It generally has a lot more fresh juice and less... Neat alcohol

JDSTER

fiftyshadesofsnail.com/2016/03/21/review-cosrx-oil-free-ultra-moisturizing-lotion/

I am 47 with sensitive skin and very early rosacea which is well controlled. I would say my skin is relatively normal/slightly combination. I have to use moisturiser after showering or I feel very tight and dry. I also get a little oily on the T zone but not massively. I rarely get spots. I do have some redness on my cheeks but it's not too bad most of the time. HTH?

Pupsiecola · 03/06/2017 23:16

Sorry. Yes, mornings. Yes, sits perfectly over TO Vit C with no balling or stinging (I have had stinging with other products and was leaving at least half an hour between layers). I can then apply SPF straight after. I'm using the Vit C again daily because I no longer have to wait between applying different layers and I was having to do that, so whether I used the Vit C depended on how much time I had.

RubyGoat · 04/06/2017 00:22

Tant - definitely introduce products one at a time, with a decent interval of at least 2 weeks between. My skin hated the TO Niacinamide, whereas some people really get a lot of benefit from it.

My Biore SPF 2017 version has arrived! Although, rather confusingly it says 2014 on the front of the pack... I checked online & the illustration on Amazon did too, & Ratzilla also shows an illustration of the packaging which says 2014... weird. I'm going to start testing it ASAP.

Pupsiecola · 04/06/2017 08:05

If I like EH Moringa Balm will I like Clinique TTDO? I'm ready to try a different cleansing balm for less £.
