Wearing shorts over 50

I know on that on holiday anything goes, but when it comes to your hometown, would you feel confident wearing shorts around and about?
I'm not talking about those 'arse hanging out' shorts, or capri trousers.
I mean normal mid thigh length shorts.

I'm not struck on skirts, they don't suit me, but shorts do. Is it a no no after 50? My legs aren't too bad although my knees have seen better days.

It's boiling hot. I need to go into town and I don't want to wear a skirt. I've thrown out my capri pants they look too old lady/M&S ish ^ and don't do anybody any favours imo
So can I/should I wear my shorts?

Wear your shorts

specialsubject · 25/05/2017 11:59

oh dear, another missed memo. I never had the legs for above knee shorts, but if I did I would still be wearing them. If you do then put them on.

not frumpsville capris either, there is (as always) a compromise.

my knees have also seen better days but only on the inside.

styledilemma · 25/05/2017 12:00

It's crazy, on holiday I don't think about it twice. Confused The shorts go on and they stay on, till we come home.

Wear your shorts, put suncream on & enjoy the weather.

changingShorts · 25/05/2017 12:01

There seem to be a lot of "shorts threads" at the moment, something to do with the weather.

As AF says, wear your shorts. I will be wearing mine. I wore them last weekend. No one pointed and laughed, no-one died, my friend said I looked "nice".

MrsBadger · 25/05/2017 12:02

wear the shorts

(and moisturise your knees and with that cream meant for heels, the one with urea in it. My knees were awful from crawling round after tinies and Flexitiol sorted them right out.)

PaleBluePigeon · 25/05/2017 12:04

Where those shorts. Flaunt them. I'm assuming of course you'll first make sure your sock arrangements are non-offensive and that your weight/height ratio is along officially authorised lines. If all that's OK you can show yourself. Probably.

PaleBluePigeon · 25/05/2017 12:04

Wear them, even.

Carolinethebrave · 25/05/2017 12:05

Wear whatever you like!

BIWI · 25/05/2017 12:11

Fuck me, styledilemma! Who gets to tell anyone what they can and can't wear because of their age?!

Wear them and wear them with pride Grin

PollyPerky · 25/05/2017 12:11

IMO shorts are for a) beach 2) sport 3) holiday garb when walking in countryside.

I don't think shorts in town look good / appropriate on anyone, regardless of age.

Wear a skirt or dress- much cooler.

Standards darling, standards. :)

neveradullmoment99 · 25/05/2017 12:13

I am 49 and have mine on today. Who cares really?

neveradullmoment99 · 25/05/2017 12:13

I also am sporting a rather stylish bruise on one knee and a plaster on the other. I fell.

BuckingFrolicks2 · 25/05/2017 12:18

I think "people" look far more ridiculous wearing the wrong clothes for the temperature than they do wearing eg shorts on a hot day. I notice that much more than eg bumpy knees, or fatness etc

I'm 53 and fat and I'm out in mine. If anyone sneers I do not care,

slug · 25/05/2017 12:33

51 and rock the shorts with pride. I'm a size 16/18, have never tanned in my life and frankly, IDGAF. They're comfortable.

Yeah, I'm wearing them in the garden. I'm wondering whether to change into something else to go into town.
I might bump into PollyPerky Grin

Don't come to my town today, Polly! Just popped out of the office and every third person (young, old, male, female, etc) seems to be wearing shorts. And I'd be wearing mine if I wasn't at work.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 25/05/2017 12:42

47 and in shorts today. The difference between wearing them about town and wearing them on holiday is what I wear them with. On holiday it will just be a vest or t shirt and flip flops but at home it will always be a short sleeved shirt or loose blouse with a longer length light cardigan if it's getting cooler and a pair of nice flat sandals. I hate skirts so shorts are a must for me in hot weather.

MisguidedAngel · 25/05/2017 12:49

73 here, I wear shorts as soon as it's too hot for jeans. I don't like my knees, but in the words of my late not-lamented mother "nobody's looking at you".

neveradullmoment99 · 25/05/2017 13:13

Surely it depends upon the shorts? What is the difference between wearing longish shorts and a skirt? None! More practical if anything.
I see tons of people wearing shorts. Just no to bum skimming.

My nearest city was full of people of all ages wearing shorts on Sunday, when it was only just a bit warm if it hadn't clouded over.

I have some men's just above the knee shorts that I'll happily do the school run in, if it's hot. I'm wearing just below the knee length joggers - 8 year old M&S so lovely soft, light cotton - today though the quick leg shave i did in the shower, this morning, leaves something to be desired.

I find skirts and dresses fucking annoying. They're impossible to move in without either getting in the way or getting too far out of the way for comfort. The nearest to a dress I possess is a longer length tunic that I always wear with black skinny jeans.

Floisme · 25/05/2017 16:47

If you mean what do I personally wear (and we're talking city not beach) I prefer ankle length widish leg, cotton trousers any day. I find them much more comfortable than shorts because I burn easily and to be honest, I don't know how people can bear the feel of their arms and legs cooking in the sun. Plus they suit my shape as they show off my ankles rather than my knees and skim my thighs. But that's just me and I wouldn't dream of imposing that on anyone else. We don't all start looking the same or liking the same things just because we've turned 50.

EleanorRigbysNeice · 25/05/2017 17:30

Nobody's looking at you 😄😄😄

Love that! Trouble is, people do look/judge/tut. I had a
lady sitting opposite me at the airport last year. It was a hot day and we were heading off to Italy. She kept looking at my legs and pulling a "sucking a lemon" face. In the end I asked her what was the matter, had I offended her in some way? She was way older than me and said "I think you need to cover your legs dear". I was so upset and have never worn them since. Even at home.

What a rude woman. Whats it to her?
