Wrap dresses - I thought they were supposed to be flattering

I picked up a wrap dress today (it's a plain black Boden one) and think it might do for my smart outing next month. Trouble is I feel as if it accentuates my slightly bulbous midriff area. Am I wearing it wrong? Perhaps it's just the wrong style for me, but I thought they were supposed to be universally flattering

I looked like I was wearing a dinner lady apron when I tried on a funky print one

I think they suit me,large norks big tum.I always get told I look slimmer in them.

Skyler · 14/03/2007 17:41

I look dumpy in anything with a defined waist or belt ie belted coats etc.

Molesworth · 14/03/2007 17:42

I think I'm a similar shape to you Skyler - what dress shapes suit you?

Honestly I'm stumped.

Have a waist and small norks (size 8) and they are good for me as they make me look as if I have a bit of shape (can look like a beanpole in some styles).

Mind you I am 30 weeks pg atm and gaining weight fast so perhaps I will end up giving mine away if don't suit the no waisted...

noddyholder · 14/03/2007 18:26

Look awful on me too Only ever seen them look good on a pregnant woman!

Skyler · 14/03/2007 18:32

Bias cut is another no no I find. I don't have many dresses at all and this could be why. The ones I have are very straight up and down and worn with control pants underneath!
I have a lovely Monsoon dress that I bought when I was curvy with massive norks (when I was breastfeeding) and I am going to have to sell it as it now hangs straight down until it hits my spare tyre where my waist should be. I have more skirts and tops than dresses.

Molesworth · 14/03/2007 18:33

Maybe I should go for a skirt and top then. Or even trousers and top. I feel disheartened with the frock search!

I know what you mean . I bought this Monsoon dress for a christening and summer weddings and was so looking forward to buying a dress as I have had to wear separates due to breastfeeding or pregnancy clothes for the last four years it seemed. I only found this one that looked remotely flattering and it was bloody £95. I have never ever spent that much and now it looks crap on me.

Bucketsofdynomite · 14/03/2007 20:55

I know what you mean, that flat panel doesn't actually hang like a curtain does it, more like a throw draped over a pouffe.
I had one with quite a saggy front that needed a vest top under it - I think that looked good because it drew your attention up away from the tummy.

I find they never work on my cleavage due to my wide shoulders pulling them open. But it is so easily remedied by wearing a top underneath that it doesn't cause me an issue.
