Are Style bloggers wealthy as a result of their blogs or do only wealthy women actually blog in the first place?

Just wondering really as every single style blog I come across is written by someone who appears to have pots of cash and thinks an item reduced to £200 from £300 is a 'bargain'?

I seriously can't get over the amount most of them seem to spend on clothes!

OP posts:
Tw1nsetAndPearls · 12/05/2017 19:11

I have just looked at midlife chic. Chic isn't the word I would use.

MaQueen · 12/05/2017 19:19

Quite...I know I'm most definitely middle aged (46) but I'm still way too young to embrace her Country Casuals style. I can only assume the clothes were mainly from the M&S Classics range?

I like the 2 French bloggers I follow, because they're in their 40s but still know how to rock a pair of jeans and a biker jacket.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 12/05/2017 19:21

Those gold ruffle sandals are fucking horrible. Sorry but they really, really are.

CrispyBathTowel · 12/05/2017 19:21

M&S went a bit blogger crazy recently where they have loads of blogs £150 to pick out clothing to keep and show on their blogs. There was some hashtag that went with it but I can't remember what. Every other blog is featuring M&S at the moment - it's overkill and hasn't enticed me to buy anything as what they're picking isn't that nice.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 12/05/2017 19:22

Twinset - have DM'd you. Hope you don't mind!

ElspethFlashman · 12/05/2017 19:28

MaQueen remind me of those 2 French bloggers again? I do like a biker jacket.

MaQueen · 12/05/2017 19:43

elspeth I have linked to them just a bit further up the thread.

MaQueen · 12/05/2017 19:46

The gold frilled sandals are okay if you are over 70 and have fallen insteps

I got some lovely black, biker jeans from M&S of all places, I think it was their Indigo range? But only because I saw them on MF40s.

I also saw a great black, utility jacket from Indigo too, but have decided to go for the khaki one from Topshop instead.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 12/05/2017 19:50

I have the black biker jeans. Hadn't noticed them on MF40s. I really like them.

Tw1nsetAndPearls · 12/05/2017 19:56

My problem is that I am fat, it's hard enough to find a stylish blog for somebody in their 40s who doesn't want to spend a fortune but add on my fat and it is useless.

MaQueen · 12/05/2017 20:02

Nope, I stand corrected I think MF40s were from Mango? But, it meant the ones from M&S caught my eye. I'd like them in the khaki too.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 12/05/2017 20:07

I have similar M&S khaki ones from last summer. Have worn them loads.

EnidButton · 12/05/2017 20:52

I had a look at frugality. I like her writing style and the interiors posts but the clothes aren't for me. I'd look bizarre in them. I swear I had those wide legged cropped stripy pants in my fancy dress box as a kid

GinsnRoses · 12/05/2017 22:13

To be fair Midlife Chic is one of the few bloggers who writes really well - no typos or lazy autocorrect errors and she comes across as both warm and interesting. Her photos are also really professional. Her style is very far away from mine but I enjoy reading her posts much more than some of the others despite that.

GinsnRoses · 12/05/2017 22:14

And agree with PPs about The Frugality - interesting posts, nice clothes, but frugal? My arse is she!

ElspethFlashman · 12/05/2017 22:37

Thanks I'll have a look back.

homebythesea · 13/05/2017 07:45

maqueen you are being very unfair to MidlifeChic. She says in her most recent post that she contacted M&S to collaborate with her, no hiding that it was a promotion for them. If you had followed her you would know that she has agonised about how to balance blogging with running her business and making it pay. You would also know that she gets a massive engagement from her readers, some posts, mostly those that deal with midlife issues and family life as opposed to straight fashion, get hundreds of detailed responses and conversations from and between followers - far more than any similar blogger. It's this that sets her apart.

You may not like her fashion but would you make those comments to her if you were face to face?

FrustratedFrugal · 13/05/2017 08:05

I've been very critical of bloggers in the past but I just want to say that Midlifechic is among the bloggers that I really respect. She is open about disclosure, labels brand collaborations clearly, and also has to balance her time and costs as a small business owner. And her blog is so much more than just a catalogue of clothes being worn. She has built a community. I really respect that.

CrispyBathTowel · 13/05/2017 08:09

I don't see MaQueens post as being unfair - everything was from M&S and everything was vile regardless of if it was a sponsored collaboration or not. That's not really an unfair thing to say - it's factual though the 'vile' element is subjective obviously.

CrispyBathTowel · 13/05/2017 08:21

I have to say though that collaborations don't bother me - I look at fashion blogs for outfit ideas and how to put things together. I either like the items or I don't - if the bloggers got them for free or not is irrelevant to me.

It does bother me a bit on beauty blogs because you don't know if an item is going to be good or not until you've bought it and tried it which can lead to expensive mistakes. I would rather know then if a blogger is raving about an item because the bought it and genuinely love it or if it's because a PR company gave it to them and paid them to rave about it.

ElspethFlashman · 13/05/2017 08:21

Well I had to go over and have a look. I've never visited her blog before. Never laid eyes on her. Gosh she has a terrific figure.

But that M&S post is not content I would enjoy reading in a million years. It was like reading something from their own marketing department. But I know you have to keep the relationship sweet. It's just not for me.

And yes her style is too old for me and I'm in my 40s. I'm presuming she's a fair bit older?

AspasiaFitzgibbon · 13/05/2017 08:28

I remember a similar thread a few months ago when MidLifeChic suddenly turned up and everybody starting back-tracking very shamefacedly.
It made me think a lot about online comments v. face-to-face.
Yes, this is a public forum and anyone could see comments made here; but it's also a forum that takes the form of a conversation. And yes, bloggers are individual human beings, not characters is a soap opera; but at the same time they have chosen to put themselves online and expose themselves to potentially millions of people who don't know them personally and never will.
Subsequently I decided only to post comments that I would be willing to be held to account for and wouldn't mind the person reading.
E.g. [blogger X], although she's the same age as me, dresses far more conservatively than I would choose. I wish Blogger Y would spend less time talking about her health. Blogger Z's use of the word 'holibobs' makes me want to rip my own head off and throw it at the wall.
Actually, maybe not the last one?

Same here. I rarely even read the text, just look at the photos for inspiration.

Almahart · 13/05/2017 08:51

I like MidlifeChic too, for the reasons GinsnRoses gives. I also like her insights into the industry. Do even though I wouldn't wear most if the stuff she features I do read her blog a lot.
