I have a cropped olive green boiled wool jacket from St Michaels, so proper vintage. It says size 12 - I am a petite size 8 and it fits perfectly/ I bought it at a jumble sale nearly 20 years ago and it still looks good as new. That is quality high street clothing, not ghastly pink and yellow nylon tents.

SloanyAnne · 30/05/2017 07:21

In Feb 1991 I bought a black lined wool pencil-ish skirt. It was beautifully cut and I wore it hundreds of times. When I gave it away a few years later because I'd lost weight, it looked as good as new.
I'd pay serious money for a skirt like that now but that's not what they're about these days. While we're wearing our boiked wool jackets and quality skirts time and time again, they're not making money from our repeat purchasing.
Silly sods haven't worked out that there's room for both.

SloanyAnne · 30/05/2017 07:22

Boiled wool.
I have no idea what boiked wool is but I don't want I'd like it.Grin

I have a couple of lined shift dress, A line skirt and very 1960s, one red and one white, which I bought in M and S in 1993 which I still wear!

Words fail me with the current range of monstrosities but ginger I love you work and admire you and every one else who has taken one for the team Grin

BagelGoesWalking · 30/05/2017 14:03

Up in London shopping with my DD17. The horror!

One of the many monstrosities in Topshop, many under the guise of "festival wear"

That brown dress. My eyes!

Great idea to get M&S on here for a webchat. I'm going to report that post so MNHQ can consider it!

mrsmortis · 30/05/2017 15:15

That pink M&S dress is in Grazia as a top buy or the equivalent. Apparently they think it's so great it's going to sell out!.

Gingernaut · 30/05/2017 16:20

BagelGoesWalking Grin There's a definite Carmen Miranda vibe going on there.

Are they selling maracas as accessories?? Grin

MelanieCheeks · 30/05/2017 17:52

Oh dear, I quite like the khaki sleeveless version!

ErrolTheDragon · 30/05/2017 18:01

It's not as bad as the pink one, for sure ...it's not pink, no sleeves are better than nasty sleeves, the back doesn't look to be cut so stupidly low, and its got a bit of shape on the front. And the length/splits are better (if you like that sort of thing) than the frumpyness of the pink.

WhatchaMaCalllit · 31/05/2017 12:55

That's only 'festival' wear Bagel if you're festival happens to be in Malaga in Spain and it's dedicated to Flamenco!
www.malagaenflamenco.com/
Even then I'd be thinking it's OTT and not suitable for the festival.

EnidButton · 31/05/2017 14:45

Spotted this in Mango. WTF are they trying to do to us?

Lass I've recently bought this from Oasis! I love it! It's kind of similar to the M&S archive one!

BusterGonad · 31/05/2017 15:51

Ha ha Enid, I could see the potential of the M&S pink dress but that Mango dress really has no redeeming features and the sandals...wtf.

EnidButton · 31/05/2017 16:03

Colour me baffled Buster Grin

BitOutOfPractice · 31/05/2017 16:51

And the mango dress is £170 Shock WTAF?

The model looks like they had to get her wasted to even put it on.

BusterGonad · 31/05/2017 17:06

Omg I didn't even realize it was £170. 😂

ErrolTheDragon · 31/05/2017 18:51

Blimey. I took my 18yo shopping for holiday clothes yesterday - we were successful after much trawling, but she sighed longingly as she passed the racks of mens summer shirts (unfortunately not sized for a 5'1 girl) and we commented on the fundamental inequality - just about every piece of male clothing was wearable and fit for purpose whereas most of the women's stuff failed on taste, decency or both.

Still, we did our bit to keep M&S afloat with £80 worth of bras and some chinese food. Grin

Floisme · 31/05/2017 19:19

Hang on. I admit I am mother to a son so this is all a bit unfamiliar to me but when did mums and teenage daughters shopping together become a thing?

I loved my mum dearly but once I hit 15, I'd never have dreamed of going shopping with her. It would have ended in a humdinger of a row.

And while I can understand being a bit pissed off with M&S, what's the point of getting upset with Top Shop or Zara? Isn't selling fast fashion and silly trends what they do?

BagelGoesWalking · 31/05/2017 19:19

Yesterday, DD bought 1 top from Brandy Melville (off the shoulder, deep red, plain not patterned, not cropped), £15.
2 tops from Zara (plain colour with contrast piping on collar & short sleeves), £5 each.
1 top, black £10 and 1 skirt, pinstripe with poppers down the middle, A line (similar to plain denim one which was v popular last year) £20, I think, from Monki.

That's it! No patterns, no motifs, no floral, no cutouts, no slogans!! And she's only 17 but also doesn't like that kind of stuff! Thinking about it, didn't see anyone walking around in anything like it either. Sales are going to be huuuuge Grin

BagelGoesWalking · 31/05/2017 19:23

Floisme we don't do it often but every now and again, we go to London to replenish her wardrobe a bit. Different shops we don't have locally. We still subsidise her spending so I am needed for the cash/debit card! I know other families work differently but that's how we do it.

Floisme · 31/05/2017 19:29

Sorry but that's just weird Grin Mums and daughters are supposed to fight about clothes, not go on cosy little shopping trips.
I am serious. (Maybe).
No wonder the world's going tits up.

BagelGoesWalking · 31/05/2017 20:05

Don't worry, Flo, ended the day with a stupid row about the Wasabi we'd brought home to eat (cos DH couldn't be arsed to think about getting something ready, although perfectly capable).

Balance is restored!

Floisme · 31/05/2017 20:09

Thank goodness!
Sorry I've just read my post again and I didn't mean to sound quite so rude Blush

But I do think teenager and parent fashion has got a bit too cosy of late. God knows I've benefited from that more than most but if this is the start of young people kicking over the traces and striking out on their own, fashion-wise then I don't actually think it's a bad thing.
