2 pairs of shoes for a 2 week holiday. WTF?

DP and I are off to the Caribbean for a fortnight soon. Grin I'm already thinking about what I'll be packing. Looking up tips online, many say they only pack 2 pairs of shoes. Really? Do you manage with so few? Does anyone have any good packing tips they would like to share? TIA.

oh dear, I take 4 pairs (not including what I'm wearing) for a weekend away, so may be the wrong person to ask!

Pishposh, how much room do a few sandals or flipflops take in a suitcase? Dump the pj's and you'll have plenty of room and have happy feet Grin

Expatosaurus · 24/04/2017 19:40

I'll be taking 5 on a hiking holiday this year. Boots, trainers, (hiking) sandals, going out sandals in case DH suffers a personality change and decides to go out to dinner and a pair of crocs/sandals to wear inside the house. Plus travelling there by car so not limited by luggage allowance.

I'd probably pack 3 for the holiday your going on, inside wear, pool and hiking sandals. And wear a pair of trainers/closed shoes to travel. Airports, irritated travellers with wheely suitcases and air conditioned aeroplanes don't mix well with sandals.

instaclean · 24/04/2017 19:41

I usually bring one pair of comfortable shoes (Converse or sporty ballet flats) and one pair of shiny pool sliders which can be used as slippers in the hotel and by the pool, and sometimes black ballet pumps if we're going somewhere dressy, but usually I don't bother. I never wear flip flops at all as I can't stand the bit that goes between the toes. Sometimes I'll bring proper walking boots if there's a proper trek planned (national parks etc), but if so I wear them on the plane to save packing space.

Instead of packing 5 pairs of shoes for a two week holiday in the Caribbean been 15 times solo I take DS's outgrown, but still in good condition summer clothes and leave them for the chambermaids for their kids. Or their neighbours' kids.

Everybody is happy.

Done it in Cuba, D.R. and Jamaica.

I take flipflops and flat walking shoes.

Everybody wears flipflops or trainers in the Caribbean anyway, even in the dining room in the evening. Nice strappy sandals are also fine if you want to "dress up".

The Caribbean is casual clothing. I love it.

Of course I never stay in gated communities 5* resorts!!

I'm going for a week in Spain and will take (hand luggage only):
Smart/nice trainers to travel in and walking/cycling
Naice daytime sandals
Heeled sandals for probably only one evening out
cheap flip flops for pool
Running trainers (which will be worn once or twice)

I should try and find some trainers that go with clothes and running and save some space and give up with the heels - we have 2 small dc and do not go out for lovely evenings on holiday!

happypoobum · 24/04/2017 20:51

prudence is there any room for actual clothes in your case? Grin

rollonthesummer · 24/04/2017 21:06

I took 4 pairs for my last hot fortnight away. Trainers to go in (I hate them and thought they'd be more comfy to travel in. They weren't!). Two pairs of Birkenstocks which I wore all of the time and one pair of Havaianas which I didn't wear at all but wish I had actually as I have ruined the insoles of the Birkenstocks by wearing them with dripping wet feet out of the water! They've gone all hard and rough and nasty!

BusterGonad · 24/04/2017 21:23

I take 2 at a push with additional flip flops. One pair (trainers) I'll be wearing!

CakeThat · 24/04/2017 21:40

I'd say 4 pairs of shoes is the minimal perfect amount for that type of holiday, e.g.
Flip flops for the pool
Sturdier sandals for sightseeing, going to markets etc.
Gold/silver/embellished dainty sandals for night time.
Comfy scetchers type shoes for travelling/long walks
However you may wish for flip flops in other colours if you are taking more than one swimsuit. Easy.

leccybill · 24/04/2017 21:46

3 pairs here. Skechers to go in, cheapo flip flops for daytime and jewelled metallic flat sandals for nighttime. They go with everything.

Are Havainas worth the extra expense btw?

usernumbernine · 24/04/2017 21:49

I would buy cheap flip flops out there, have converse on my feet and a pair of nice sandals in the case.

JustCallMeKate · 24/04/2017 21:53

Good grief, how do you all manage with so little shoes?

I'm going for 2 weeks in Mexico and a week in the Dominican. I'll be taking 9 pairs of flat sandals for evening, 3 pairs of flip flops for day wear, trainers for excursions and travelling in and 2 pairs of heels.

dementedma · 24/04/2017 21:56

More than one swimsuit? This is a thing?

C0RA · 24/04/2017 21:56

3 pairs here

Sketchers or similar for walking ( wear on plane )

Sandals for beach ( I don't like flip flops either, I wear non croc crocs )

Silver strappy flat sandals for night . Metallic goes with everything.

EmmaWoodlouse · 24/04/2017 21:59

I don't usually go on that kind of holiday but I think I could do it with two pairs of shoes. Comfortable sandals that also look a bit dressy (for example something like these FitFlops) and the, depending on how much walking you were going to be doing, either trainers/hiking boots/Converses. I'd ideally have three though and have one pair of properly dressy sandals and one pair of scruffy ones.

WhooooAmI24601 · 24/04/2017 22:02

I travel in navy havainas and take tan flat sandals. My holiday clothes are all navy, white and peach so tan sandals go with everything.

leccybill · 24/04/2017 22:04

I love navy and white (not so much peach), but all of your clothes?

brownear · 24/04/2017 22:10

@justcallmekate

Heels, in hot weather? Are you having a laugh? Rather you than me! Why torture yourself?

9 pairs of evening shoes!? Where is the need? No one cares what is on your feet that much. No need to take so many different pairs of evening shoes. Do you think the waiters will talk about you if you wear the same pair every night? Hmm

KoolKoala07 · 24/04/2017 22:44

2 pairs for me. I beachy pair and one evening pair.

KoolKoala07 · 24/04/2017 22:44

1*

NapQueen · 24/04/2017 22:45

Flip flops x1
Toms x1 (then curse the weird tan line they give me)
Espadrille type wedges x1.

Done.

JaceLancs · 24/04/2017 22:50

I can't wear flip flops either
Skechers
Pair of comfy flat black sandals
Black pointy flats
Flat metallic dressier sandals

GavelRavel · 24/04/2017 22:53

I can do 3 - trainers for travel, walking, days out, strappy sandals for evening, Birkenstocks or similar for beach/pool. I'd struggle with 2 unless a very casual place where could wear birkies to dinner.

Orangebird69 · 24/04/2017 22:55

Fit Flops. Classic Toms. Jazzy flat sandals for evening.

Bumplovin · 24/04/2017 23:04

To the Caribbean I took a pair of walking sandals, flip flops and one pair of heels. It's impossible to wear heels as most of the paths were sand. I was in bare feet the entire time
