Plus size summer stuff: anyone fancy a S&B scavenger hunt / sharing good finds?

ecuse · 20/04/2017 12:02

Right, here are a few things I need for summer that I always struggle with as a plus size person.

Anyone fancy scavenger hunting on my behalf and for the sake of the commons?! Or sharing your best finds this year?

Even better if you're a plus size designer/buyer: HERE IS MY LIST OF WHAT I ACTUALLY WANT YOU TO SELL ME.

For ref, I'm a size 22 apple with broad shoulders and heavy arms. So anything strapless is HIDEOUS and I will only wear sleeveless with cardigans.

My best find to share is the Next linen dress that was in Swears By the other week. Looks like not much in the picture, would never have bought it, but I LOVE IT, very flattering on me, a sort of A Line and smart enough for general office wear (not super corporate but smart and can be accessorised up). Have bought 4 in different colours and expect them to be my summer work staple. It is, of course, sleeveless, so I need a cardigan etc to go with (hence, item 2)

But here's what I need to go with.

  1. NON-MUMSY SUMMER WORKS SHOES FOR WIDE FEET
I have the WORST feet. They are both wide and deep (high instep). Sort of like pigs trotters. I want shoes that are comfortable to wear without socks, ideally leather, that are cool in summer. In general anything strappy tends to be difficult to fit the trotters into so tend to steer clear but not totally averse if anyone has found good, comfy wide fit/deep ones?

  2. VERY LIGHT CARDIGANS
I want thin/light cardigan (cotton?) which is not a shrug, not a waterfall cardigan, and not seethrough. Why are plus sized retailers not all over this? Why are they full of sleeveless and bandeau stuff when I never, ever want to get my arms or shoulders out?

I want it to be hip length ideally. Essentially something that doesn't feel like I'm wearing knitwear as bare arms is not an option for my ol' bingo wings in summer but neither do I like to spend it steaming. Nice bright colours would be a bonus as I have a lot of black work basics I like to brighten up. (I have a bright daffodil yellow one I got from Next about 5 years ago that I have worn to death). Possibly short sleeved or 3/4 sleeved?

  1. WEEKEND TOPS THAT GIVE COVERAGE BUT ARE COOL
Generally speaking I like loose but not kaftanesque. Not too short - hip length for full tummy coverage but not those mid-thigh mumus that plus sized retailers seem to revel in. I like short or 3/4 sleeves. Nothing with cap sleeves, certainly nothing sleeveless. No round necks (why, plus sized retailers? Why?). Because I need an element of coverage that is not usual in summer clothes (!) I want the fabric to be correspondingly light.

  2. CROPPED TROUSERS THAT ARE NOT MUMSY BUT ARE COOLER THAN JEANS
I usually end up in a pair of supermarket cargo type trousers which are fine as a fallback but I always feel aren't very stylish. I like linen trousers but they never last long as thigh rub makes them bobble and thin. This doesn't happen with cropped jeans but I want lighter fabric in the height of summer. Anyone found good solutions?

Plus sized designers! Here's what I don't want:
sleeveless
strapless
slogans
maxi dresses
tops that end higher than the bottom of the zip of my jeans
waterfall cardigans
animal print
high round necks (give me shelf-bosom)
to look mumsy

Anyone else want to contribute to the wish list Or the shit list?? Anyone solved the above?

Place markage

I got a couple of lighter weight cardi's in Debenhams last year. Might be worth a look. IIRC colours were good - i went for a pink and a white that will cover most bases and wore them a lot.

Blatant placemark. Need to pick up a few gems before returning to work when my maternity leave ends Sad

PlaymobilPirate · 22/04/2017 21:07

Brilliant thread op - I struggle with tops... I'm short but size 16 and 34hh means that tops seem to stop short... when I NEED them to cover my big overhang belly 😣 any recommendations would be great!

NevermetaGilesIlike · 22/04/2017 21:18

Have you looked at Poetry clothing?

Expensive but good natural materials and generous sizing.

JessKM · 22/04/2017 21:39

I've done a wardrobe refresh in yours today - they have some really lovely things in! Got some lovely linen pants which they have in lots of colours and lengths and some summer camis for layering which are 2 for £18!!!
Also some nice palazzo style pants. They have lots of choice - would deffo recommend!!

TanteJeanne · 22/04/2017 23:31

Unicorn - thanks! Just ordered the Next mesh cardigan in navy.

Germgirl · 23/04/2017 09:02

I love the plus size stuff in New Look. Ive ordered a fair bit from them. They have some horrors but basics like hoodies and t shirts are brilliant. I wore their hoodies all winter and and now have 4 of the 'boyfriend' t shirts for holiday and summer.

I'm looking for vest tops that are long enough to cover the belly when arms are in the air, no thins straps or crossover back bit.

Please help!

EnglishGirlApproximately · 23/04/2017 10:30

Love this thread! I'm going on holiday in 7 days and need clothes. I've lost a bit of weight and gone from a 22 to a 16/18 and look awful in everything I own,but I'm far from slim enough to get my bingo wings out. Will be looking for the mesh cardigan in Next.

I bought this from Fashion world and it looks good with everything I've tried it with - looks a bit shapeless in the picture but it's a nice fit.

Normally find Fashion World hit and miss with quality so great to get other recommendations

SymphonyofShadows · 23/04/2017 11:21

I have had some longer vests from Tu at Sainsburys, I'm sure they still do them.

Ollivander84 · 23/04/2017 11:48

@PlaymobilPirate - long tall Sally. I'm a size 16, 34K and just bought three tops that are amazing length wise
Also tall girls. Matalan for vest tops

I've recently discovered Boohoo, they have a huge plus size range. A lot of it is really awful but they do have some nice basic stuff and it's incredibly cheap. They often do 20% off as well

I've got a few of these, look good over leggings or with sandals:

I've got this in black, it's very flattering

This also v. flattering (can cut the strappy bit off):

This is my favourite thing, I'm considering buying another one in case anything happens to mine:

trinitybleu · 26/04/2017 14:30

youremy thanks for the BooHoo links ... I need some viscose/elastane tops for sailing as they don't crease and my current ones are knackered.

Unicorn81 · 26/04/2017 18:07

Bumping - just wondered if anyone had found anymore gems??

SimplyPut · 09/06/2017 12:16

Matalan have nice white cropped jeggings. Decent thickness but light enough for travelling. Only £10 too.

PlaymobilPirate · 10/06/2017 18:17

Cropped is my nemesis- I have lymphedema which means my legs are swollen pretty much permanently 😣

Anyone found anything good recently?

PlaymobilPirate · 01/07/2017 22:49

Bumping in the hope of some amazing ideas before I HAVE to go shopping in the next week or so 😁

practicallyimpractical38 · 27/10/2017 12:38
