Plus size summer stuff: anyone fancy a S&B scavenger hunt / sharing good finds?

ecuse · 20/04/2017 12:02

Right, here are a few things I need for summer that I always struggle with as a plus size person.

Anyone fancy scavenger hunting on my behalf and for the sake of the commons?! Or sharing your best finds this year?

Even better if you're a plus size designer/buyer: HERE IS MY LIST OF WHAT I ACTUALLY WANT YOU TO SELL ME.

For ref, I'm a size 22 apple with broad shoulders and heavy arms. So anything strapless is HIDEOUS and I will only wear sleeveless with cardigans.

My best find to share is the Next linen dress that was in Swears By the other week. Looks like not much in the picture, would never have bought it, but I LOVE IT, very flattering on me, a sort of A Line and smart enough for general office wear (not super corporate but smart and can be accessorised up). Have bought 4 in different colours and expect them to be my summer work staple. It is, of course, sleeveless, so I need a cardigan etc to go with (hence, item 2)

But here's what I need to go with.

  1. NON-MUMSY SUMMER WORKS SHOES FOR WIDE FEET
I have the WORST feet. They are both wide and deep (high instep). Sort of like pigs trotters. I want shoes that are comfortable to wear without socks, ideally leather, that are cool in summer. In general anything strappy tends to be difficult to fit the trotters into so tend to steer clear but not totally averse if anyone has found good, comfy wide fit/deep ones?

  2. VERY LIGHT CARDIGANS
I want thin/light cardigan (cotton?) which is not a shrug, not a waterfall cardigan, and not seethrough. Why are plus sized retailers not all over this? Why are they full of sleeveless and bandeau stuff when I never, ever want to get my arms or shoulders out?

I want it to be hip length ideally. Essentially something that doesn't feel like I'm wearing knitwear as bare arms is not an option for my ol' bingo wings in summer but neither do I like to spend it steaming. Nice bright colours would be a bonus as I have a lot of black work basics I like to brighten up. (I have a bright daffodil yellow one I got from Next about 5 years ago that I have worn to death). Possibly short sleeved or 3/4 sleeved?

  1. WEEKEND TOPS THAT GIVE COVERAGE BUT ARE COOL
Generally speaking I like loose but not kaftanesque. Not too short - hip length for full tummy coverage but not those mid-thigh mumus that plus sized retailers seem to revel in. I like short or 3/4 sleeves. Nothing with cap sleeves, certainly nothing sleeveless. No round necks (why, plus sized retailers? Why?). Because I need an element of coverage that is not usual in summer clothes (!) I want the fabric to be correspondingly light.

  2. CROPPED TROUSERS THAT ARE NOT MUMSY BUT ARE COOLER THAN JEANS
I usually end up in a pair of supermarket cargo type trousers which are fine as a fallback but I always feel aren't very stylish. I like linen trousers but they never last long as thigh rub makes them bobble and thin. This doesn't happen with cropped jeans but I want lighter fabric in the height of summer. Anyone found good solutions?

Plus sized designers! Here's what I don't want:
sleeveless
strapless
slogans
maxi dresses
tops that end higher than the bottom of the zip of my jeans
waterfall cardigans
animal print
high round necks (give me shelf-bosom)
to look mumsy

Anyone else want to contribute to the wish list Or the shit list?? Anyone solved the above?

GermGirl they're a very soft cottony (technical term Wink) material, stretchy but I haven't found them shiny.

Germgirl · 21/04/2017 06:30

Thank you Superhero and Pants :)

Tanaqui · 21/04/2017 06:42

Could you put a thin tee or shirt under that linen dress? A white collared shirt under the back one, or a long sleeved pink tee under the navy would look good I think and mean you didn't need the cardigan?

DragonNoodleCake · 21/04/2017 06:50

I love some of these - thanks for the post OP!

CurriedEggs · 21/04/2017 09:26

I will be avidly following this thread.

I have that Next dress too and it's great. It's very big in sizing so go down a size - yippee!

practicallyimpractical38 · 21/04/2017 10:03

I love the look of the next dress but is it short on. I'm 5 6 and like stuff at my knee or lower if I can

Dawndonnaagain · 21/04/2017 10:17

Following and loving the mango trousers!

CurriedEggs · 21/04/2017 10:22

practically I'm 5'5" and it's to the bottom of my knee.

JessKM · 21/04/2017 10:52

I had no idea Mango did plus size clothing? Thanks for this ladies!!
Those trousers PP linked are BEAUTIFUL
Any other hidden gems that do plus size?

Kuriusoranj · 21/04/2017 11:09

I KNEW that would be the dress - I bought it in a couple of colours too, and it's lovely.

Your wish list is similar to mine - particularly the shirt. I live somewhere hot hot hot and I wear a lot of vest tops/overshirts outside work. Always looking for shirts...

practicallyimpractical38 · 21/04/2017 11:28

Great thanks curriedeggs, going to order it now. I'm off to the sun next week so looking to pick up a few bits

ecuse · 21/04/2017 12:28

Very excited at all the suggestions on this thread since I last checked in. Off to check them all out Grin

I had no idea Mango did plus sized either. Exciting!

Right, I've just mentally spent about £750 at Mango. It's not cheap which I don't mind if the quality's good, given the angst shopping causes me. Any experiences?

I was really disappointed with the Next dress. Tried it on in store the other week, thought it looked very nice on the hanger. But at 5 foot 7 it was very short and the armholes were ginormous, meaning that most of my bra was on show.

happypoobum · 21/04/2017 15:46

I am a size 14 but have wobbly arms and a huge stomach and 32GG norkage. I look like a barrel to be honest.

Here's some stuff I have bought recently.

cropped jeans

Mac in case you are holidaying in Cornwall

Super Cool Sunglasses

gazelle trainers in kids size are cheaper, if not get adult ones

Jaeger culottes bargain of the century at £20 and available in size 16 still

I will add more if I can think of it.

Ooh yes - these shoes - lovely and wide and so comfy and available in half sizes

SashaSashays · 21/04/2017 18:48

ecuse, I've liked some of the stuff I've had from Mango, quite a few jackets from there including a suede one which has worn really well.

Last year I bought several summer dresses from them and they all creased like mad but I think it was just that specific fabric.

I should say I've never actually found the plus size in store, only online, but I prefer that anyway.

H&M so have their own specific Plus size range (running a discount this weekend):
www2.hm.com/en_gb/ladies/shop-by-product/hm-plus.html

So does New Look, which I always slag off but have just seen a few bits I like:
www.newlook.com/shop/inspire-plus-sizes/view-all-inspire_2030089

River Island is another:
www.riverisland.com/women/plus-size-clothing/_/N-7xiZl2c?icid=mu/women/ri-plus

I just bought this from there

SashaSashays · 21/04/2017 18:51

I should add the River Island selection includes wide fitting sandals.

I'm after these at the moment www.riverisland.com/women/shoes--boots/sandals/leopard-wide-fit-crossover-block-heel-sandals-698925

A1Sharon · 21/04/2017 19:01

ILoveCherries that Next dress comes in a longer length on line, but I was worried about the armholes...

hiccupgirl · 21/04/2017 19:42

That next dress doesn't work if you're a pear. I need the 18 for my hips (and even then it's a bit tight) but the top is huge on me and looks awful.

I've bought another Boden Blackberry dress this year - the 16 fits me well and the length is knee length on me at 5'3'. But it is sleeveless which doesn't fit the brief here.

Cellardoor23 · 21/04/2017 20:39

I'm a size 16-18 and I've bought this top in large. It's quite a light material, so I shouldn't get too hot in the summer. I don't like wearing sleeveless tops either.

SimplyNigella · 21/04/2017 20:42

The Boden Cressida dress is fab- sleeves, v neck, decent length.

ecuse · 21/04/2017 21:06

Plus sized models all seem to have lovely upper arms

OP posts:
Loftyjen · 22/04/2017 00:04

This http://www.marksandspencer.com/floral-print-short-sleeve-shell-top/p/p22501771?image=SD011T4387866Y8XXEC90&color=IVORYMIX&prevPage=plp was a rare find in M&S for me the other day - the materials that fab mix of heavy enough to flatter while not feeling like you'll be melting when it gets warmer, covers my tummy and upper arms nicely.

practicallyimpractical38 · 22/04/2017 00:17

I bought this and got 20% off only the other day. I will wear it with some indigo denims.
