Booked it and going for it. My hair looks shit poker straight so I'm going curly! Hoping to look fabulous and bouncy rather than Charlene from Neighbours but I'm very excited all the same!

acornsandnuts · 20/04/2017 15:57

I loved my perm back in the day but my hair is so delicate now I know it won't take it.

Can't wait to see. Wink

TwoBeams · 20/04/2017 15:59

I'm watching because I'd love to do this! I've got shoulder length hair that's not straight nor awfully curly....Think curly at front and shitey waves through the rest.

Can't wait to see your pic OP

picklemepopcorn · 20/04/2017 16:14

We all want to see!

HemanOrSheRa · 20/04/2017 16:18

I have stupid fine, straight, bum fluff hair. I LOVED having mine permed in my late teens and 20's. Then it fell out of fashion Sad. I hope perms are making a comeback!

LurkingQuietly · 20/04/2017 16:48

Uh oh. I've just googled and I am now obsessing about getting a perm. I have highlighted hair though (which is strong as anything despite shedloads of bleach), so I'd be very nervous. But...I really want one now! Can't wait to see pics, OP.

picklemepopcorn · 20/04/2017 16:56

I have a friend who has a Kylie style perm. It suits her. It's just what she looks like.

AllPizzasGreatAndSmall · 20/04/2017 17:20

I was talking about perms with my hairdresser a couple of weeks ago, she said they don't even do them any more at the salon.

I would think that anyone who does do perms generally only does the style that older ladies e.g. my mum and aunties in their eighties favour, whereas back in the 80s they were more experienced in fashion perms.

MrsBellefleur · 20/04/2017 17:27

I had a perm a couple of years ago. I recommend your local beauty/hairdressing college if you have one. £15 for mine and it was fab! Just took a little while as they were trainees.

Laststop · 20/04/2017 17:29

Well OP?!

HemanOrSheRa · 20/04/2017 19:34

Ooh. What time was OP's appt? Has it all gone wrong Sad. I hope not, for OP's sake and all of us with limp sad hair who were relying on this to change our lives.

umberellaonesie · 20/04/2017 19:36

I am booked for a consultation next week to discuss a perm.
Nervous but excited.
Taking notes on all top tips
Can't wait to see yours op

Come back in time with me to the 80s when perms were The Thing To Have. I was in my late teens & really wanted a perm. My mum's work told us her sister was a hairdresser and would do my hair for 'mates rates'.

I jumped at the chance and she came round one evening to do the job. Smelly ammonia hours later, hair dried she showed me my new look in the mirror.

I burst into tears. I had a perfect GRANNY PERM!! All I needed was the blue rinse. It turns out she was a trainee hairdresser in an old people's home / sheltered accommodation type place and she'd only ever styled elderly ladies.

Much, much, much washing & running to chemist the next day to see if they had a relaxant treatment or something. My hair was a total frizzy mess for weeks Sad

Placemarking!

I had one of these in a v expensive salon a good few years ago and was so disappointed. Was promised beach waves but ended up with flat straight hair to the tips of my ears and then a tight zig-zaggy mess from there down. It looked like a bad 80s perm. Luckily it only lasted a few months, but my hair Took a while to get back into condition. The salon doesn't offer it anymore so I'm guessing I wasn't alone.

I'm sure the techniques and products have come a long way since then though. Hope the OP has had a more positive experience.

Place marking!

MadisonAvenue · 20/04/2017 20:39

This has made me realise that you now don't smell perm solution whenever you walk past a salon.

I was hairdressing in the 80s so my perms were free. I used to put loads of mousse on while it was still damp, then leave it and once it was dry I'd run my fingers through it before tipping my head upside down and spraying it with firm hairspray.
My hair was HUGE! It was magnificent!

CopperRose · 20/04/2017 20:47

Place marking too!!

I've been growing out my short, graduated bob for quite a few months now - it's down to shoulder length and I've been seriously considering a perm when it's longer but am scared 😳

I remember HoneyDragon's perm thread - hers looked lovely 😊
