I want to buy this. Tell me why I shouldn't.

I really like this top and I'm tempted to buy it, but it's stupid to spend this much on a basic top like this. I don't often see tops that are cut like this. I really want it. I never splurge. I'm very frugal with how I spend. Tell me I shouldn't buy it... or tell me I should.

This from TKMaxx [http://www.tkmaxx.com/tktrends-womens-mod-box/black-lace-pleated-cami/invt/15054289]

Nancy91 · 11/04/2017 19:39

Oh nooooo it was so cheap Sad

Aeroflotgirl · 11/04/2017 19:43

This is one I am eyeing up www.tkmaxx.com/view-all-womenswear/spaghetti-strap-blouse-/invt/03062480

Thank you, Floisme. It's kind of amazing the type of comments that can come from something like this... I'm the type to normally shop at TJ Maxx and thrift stores/charity shops, but I do like Nordstroms (but I've never bought anything from there at that price).

I carry my grandmother's vintage Bottega Veneta handbags passed down to me and a faux leather tote from Nordstrom. I'm pretty frugal as they come.

I especially didn't like the suggestion to donate money instead of buying myself something and to talk about how nice it is to do something for someone else. To the poster who wrote that, you don't know me... I donate thousands each year to causes I'm passionate about. I'd think nothing to drop $250 for an animal rescue or David Sheldrick Wildlife Fund or a childrens home or battered womens shelter, but I don't allow myself to buy big ticket items for me.

Nancy, I'm going to bookmark that page and check back to see if they get my size in.

I'm all for investment pieces but that is truly ridiculous.

I'm also probably biased cos my Granny could knit one just as beautiful for a bit less.

But ultimately if you can afford it and it makes you happy then buy it. I just couldn't.

elephantcuddles · 11/04/2017 19:47

Aeroflotgirl, I like the first one you posted. Different look but still nice.

TheMasterNotMargarita · 11/04/2017 19:47

Sorry I x posted with you. Please don't think I mean you are ridiculous...I meant the price!

Aeroflotgirl · 11/04/2017 19:47

I have shopped at Nordstrome where I bought my £100 True Religion Jeans in the sale there, I do like high end jeans. Its fine to treat yourself, I love it, I go for high end designer heandbags, I have Christian Dior, Miu Miu, Louis Vuitton, Gucci. However there are much nicer tops at a fraction of the price.

Aeroflotgirl · 11/04/2017 19:48

Thanks Elephant, I like TKMaxx as you get some really edgy different designer clothing for a fraction of the price.

elephantcuddles · 11/04/2017 19:51

I bought 3 tops in TJ Maxx yesterday for around $40. Two of them are double v tops. They are made out of modal which is one of my favorite fabrics as it's so soft and feels like silky cotton on the skin and doesn't wrinkle.

Aeroflotgirl · 11/04/2017 19:56

Oh wow they do sound lovely Elephant, are you in the US? Ahhh so you could go to a Nordstrom and try it on and see if you like it, and have a think. I am in the UK, so have to ship items from Nordstrom paying customs.

onemouseplace · 11/04/2017 20:02

I remember when I was a student (so not exactly flush) I bought a vest top from Maxmara which was £80 at the time (c. 1998, so probably in the same ball park as the OP's). Some sort of man made material - I can't remember exactly what.

I wore that vest top to death - it was amazing. It was the perfect weight, draped beautifully and just looked expensive. I have relatively big boobs and a lot of vest tops make me look really busty, but there was something about the width of the straps that was perfect for me. Yes, I could have bought 20 vest tops from Top Shop or H&M for the same money, but this one was perfect for me.

And I'm not a snob about clothes, my second favourite vest top ever was from M&S and was about £10. If you are buying something because you love it and it is perfect, rather than because it is a certain label and cost £££££, and you can afford it, then who cares?

Nearlyadoctor · 11/04/2017 20:05

Just read the whole thread - amazing how opinionated some people are.... I'm sure if you list all the charities you donate to OPthey'll tell you they're the wrong ones! Also if you'd like to quote your annual income versus expenditure then everyone can have an opinion on that too.

It looks an ok top, nothing particularly special but I think the key is to try it on. I often find if I lust after an item of clothing when I eventually try it on, it doesn't look as I imagine, but am glad I've tried it just to scratch the itch so to speak. On the other hand if you try it and it looks stunning and you can afford it, feel you will get lots of wear from it, then why not. Please report back when you've tried it.

elephantcuddles · 11/04/2017 20:14

Aero, yes I'm in the US. I lived in the UK last year and had to pay customs if I ordered something from the states. I didn't like it so I tried not to do that. The customs fees make it that much more expensive. :(

OneMouse, MaxMara is a nice brand. I've never bought anything from them but have drooled over a few of their tops. I've never even heard of the brand that I posted tbh. I'm also busty so I'm fully expecting the top to look nothing like it looks on the model as it would on me.

Nearlyadoctor, haha very true.
I think I often see items online and they look so dreamy. Then if I try them on, it's nothing like what I imagined it to be. Every once in a while an item will be just as wonderful as you imagined, but that's a needle in the haystack. I feel like I return 80% of the things I buy!

Hi OP, have you tried Maje? Don't know if you get the OUTNET in the us but I've seen similar tops by them for around £60

Aeroflotgirl · 11/04/2017 20:56

The customs charges really hike p the price😥

Mrs9C · 11/04/2017 21:58

Sometimes to get something out of my system, I have to order it, and when I receive it I take one look and think what was I thinking?!, for me to get it out of my system. Might be worth doing.

tickwhitetick · 12/04/2017 06:53

It's lovely. If you'll get lots of wear out of it, why not?

CakeNinja · 12/04/2017 08:14

Back in the day when I was thin and small chested I wouldn't have thought twice about spending this much on a vest top as I would have worn it as a top in its own right.
I don't really care about materials, labels etc, if I like something and can afford it, I'll buy it.
Now I have wobbly upper arms and a bigger (saggy, oh I'm quite the catch didn't I say?!), I wear vests as layers underneath my clothes and therefore spend very little on them.

If you love it, give it a go!!

CakeNinja · 12/04/2017 08:15

That's a 'bigger chest'!

burnishedsilver · 12/04/2017 08:59

When you ask something as open ended as "tell my why I shouldn't" you invite all manner of negative replies. Its not really fair for other posters to pass comment on the amount of negative replies when that is what was asked for.

silkpyjamasallday · 12/04/2017 09:02

I'd get it if I were you OP, at least you can return if it isn't as gorgeous in person, I'm quite tempted myself! I have spent similar on basic tops and I do think it's worth spending more on basics than on a party dress, I always get things like that from eBay or depop because the likelihood is I will wear it only a few times whereas a plain top will go with all my other clothes and the cost per wear will be minuscule by the time the top wears out.

Floisme · 12/04/2017 12:00

The op asked for opinions on buying the top. My own view of it was faiirly negative. I was commenting on the number of personal comments and the totally unasked for advice.

JohnCheese · 13/04/2017 16:21

This is a handbag thread under another name. I hate to be dragged in but I have to say I just don't get them. OP is allowed spend her money any which way, it's really none of our business. I don't understand how or why anyone would feel free to tell the OP how to spend or donate her own money. Maybe op's name is Kate Middleton. or Jennifer Anniston. That top is something Jennifer would wear. Would you tell Jennifer not to buy it??

I don't get how nice the top is either but so what. What do I know. Hurry up and try it on and report back OP! No pressure!
