Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5

For those who are taking a peek and wondering whether previous threads are worth reading, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Deviations on this thread are mostly my fault. Grin

If you're in need of some advice coming to grips with your skincare routine please don't hesitate to ask, we don't bite, only occasionally sting with a bit of Biologique Recherche P50 now and then Wink. Just make sure to state clearly what your concerns and needs are in as much detail as possible, skincare is highly individual and a random recommendation for a 'good' product will be completely different from one person to the next.

Make sure you've read the earlier threads (or at the very least the first one) so we're not being asked to answer previously raised questions. It takes a lot of time and effort to answer these queries and often the answers can be found in previous threads, but if you still have questions relating specifically to you, use the following form to make life easier on us. We generally answer one a day on a first come first served basis. Not everyone will have answers and sometimes we can't answer you at all. We're only a bunch of amateurs that can respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

Thanks for those recs, have you posted about the nivea before? It rings a bell - I'll check it out. Thank you for the H&S warning!! :)

Ollivander84 · 15/04/2017 20:35

Possibly! I found some in bodycare so it was cheap, they do a selection from normal to extra dry skin. Slap it on after washing, rinse off and dry and done

miffy2 · 15/04/2017 21:09

Dulcimena thank you so much. Yes I'm currently using TO 2% so I will alternate that with the P50W for now anyway. No reaction at all to the P50 other than the tiniest reddening of skin immediately after use. Bodes well. I'll probably end up using it 2/3 times a week.

EnidButton · 15/04/2017 22:53

I used the Clean On Me today Olli thanks for the recommendation. It has sat unloved in my bathroom since Christmas so good to get it used.

Ollivander84 · 15/04/2017 23:00

I figure if I recommend it and it doesn't work for KP then the worst is it's a decent smelling shower gel! And cheap

My face is less stingy today so will be retinol applying tomorrow. Am avoiding cheeks and doing forehead/nose/chin then rubbing the remnants into cheeks as they seem to get the most sensitive

EnidButton · 16/04/2017 01:07

It did feel nice. I'm happy with the Eucerin but everything helps. Smile

EnidButton · 16/04/2017 01:40

Tiny bit on The Ordinary foundations here www.the-pool.com/beauty/make-up/2017/15/elle-turner-on-the-ordinary-serum-foundation

That 50,000 person waitlist though! Shock And when people start receiving them and talking about it that'll go up even more I expect. I was waiting until user reviews were on before buying but at that rate it'll be 2020 before I get some.

EnidButton · 16/04/2017 01:40

*were in

Ollivander84 · 16/04/2017 01:59

That's a crazy amount!!! I hope they're ready for it. I did get on the pre order v v early so if they're doing it in order like they said then I'm hopeful
Happy to review and compare the two when they arrived

Ollivander84 · 16/04/2017 02:00

Ooooh I found an actual review

And swatches with link to another review at the bottom

wiltingfast · 16/04/2017 10:50

Dulci, I have found this moogoo wash to be excellent. It's widely available in health stores and chemists here in Ireland.

purple15 · 16/04/2017 14:30

Hi it's me again with problems with my new skincare.
Thanks for the advice re the Face Theory moisterisor I waited ages and rubbed it in well and because I wasn't as impatient it seemed to rub in ok.
The problem now is The Ordinary vitamin c. All the flakeness on top is the correct word pilling.
Is it advisable to wash it off after 30 mins or how to you apply foundation on top of all the pilling . I did try to push it all to side before the foundation but there must be an easier way.

mintmagnummm · 16/04/2017 15:37

Purple also with the face theory once u have massaged it in for a bit try just using light downward movements that helps too. Can't advise about the vit c I'm sure someone else will be along soon

EnidButton · 16/04/2017 18:13

Thanks for the links Olli

RubyGoat · 16/04/2017 19:11

I hope Botemp is ok, just busy again with work.

Olli - I bought some of that S&G shower gel but haven't used it yet, been on the sofa all day with a migraine. It smells nice though. I smelled the 2 different body lotions in Boots yesterday - neither seemed especially offensive. However according to Dr google, it's the specific ingredients salicylic acid, lactic acid, & urea that are useful in treating KP. So I've been scouring the ingredients & reviews on a few body lotions, & the Avene Akerat lotion seems quite recommended. It does contain mineral oil though, but a lot of body lotions do... I'm not sure it's quite so much of an issue on the body as we're not generally sticking so many products / layers on there. I think it's a buildup / blockage issue, & if it's not building up with other products it's less of an issue.

I'm going to try out a homemade version of the ingrown hair solution tomorrow when I can buy a clean dropper bottle from the local aromatherapy shop. Will give feedback when I've tested it out a bit.

Ollivander84 · 16/04/2017 19:22

If you see it then Aldi or Lidl did a 10% urea lotion for feet, that was good for arms too but worked wonders on my dry heels. Was mega cheap
The palmers one I have here says - vitamin E, AHA, lactic acid (actually that's third in the ingredients so quite high up), salicylic acid, then some fruit acid extracts. Does have silicone and mineral oil in but I'm ok with that on my body as it doesn't seem to do much in a negative way

Ollivander84 · 16/04/2017 19:24

Aldi is the urea one, just checked

Thanks for that rec wilting - their SPF looks good too.

purple15 · 17/04/2017 10:37

Pupsiecola Do you think washing the Ordinary Vitamin C off after 30 mins you get the full benefit.
This morning I waited 30 mins before applying my foundation and it was the worst pilling I have seen.
Think tomorrow I will wash it off .

yongnian · 17/04/2017 10:45

Checking in to catch up with everyone as lost the thread! Back later.....

Pupsiecola · 17/04/2017 11:00

purple, bo suggested that was the case. I don't know. I've done a quick Google and as with all things there are conflicting answers!

RedandWhiteStripe · 17/04/2017 11:09

Hello everyone you all sound very knowledgable so I wonder if you can help me.

  1. I had lots of big spots on my nose as a teenager, which I duly squeezed Blush ... The sides of my nose are now permanently pink and there are some tiny broken red veins/capillaries (?). Could Liquid Gold help with this?

  2. I have lots of clogged pores on my nose and cheeks - not whiteheads or blackheads, they are dry and just have gunk in them Blush Can anything take this gunk out and then 'close' the pores?

  3. The new No.7 Vitamin C serum at £15 looks interesting - is it worth it though or hocus pocus? I'm sure I read something about vitamins needing to be kept in dark glass to keep them active and the bottle it's in is clear from memory?

I'd be grateful for any comments! Flowers

babyturtles · 17/04/2017 11:46

hi lovely skin care gurus, could you please help with my "closed comedones" on my forehead - I've read BHA / Retin A / salicylic might help but I've never used anything like this so would appreciate some advice.

I've read through the first thread and have ordered Bioderma SPF 50 to start looking after my skin a bit :) thank you.

Skin type: Normal

Approx age (range): 20-25

Primary skin concern: Closed comodones on my forehead - I'll attach a picture from google below.

Routine : none, just use water to wash

AM :water

PM :water

Makeup : none, if I do I remove it with Liz earle Hot Cloth cleanser.

Occasional treatments: none

Things I've tried in the past with disastrous results: n/a

Things that are really working well for me now: n/a

Any dietary/health concerns/pregnant: no

What I'm willing to spend on a single skincare item: £50

I specifically [want help with/am looking for a product to/am curious about trying]: The below picture is of closed comedones just in case you're unfamiliar with them - I don't really have any other skin problems.

thank you guys

Playing catch up! Don't worry, not busy with work this time, just Easter related stuff swallowing up my time. I'll leave the SS stuff for next week for now and try to answer some lingering questions that haven't been addressed by others so far.

Althea, the SPF version is handy in cases like yours where there's been a sunburn-like damage but you have to go off the wisdom that you tolerate those UV filters well under normal circumstances. So non-SPF version is safer for now.

userallusedup, I'm on the fence whether the results with TO Nia are down to the combination of Nia and Zinc or that the zinc is the thing helping greatly (which is why LRP Zerosinc is such a much loved product). Good to know it's working for you regardless, speaking of Nia, Pupsie, I've found a good contender from SK, Sidmool Dr. Troub Skin Returning Niaten Serum which is 83% Bamboo water (soothing), 10% Nia, 2% Arbuten and a few other pigmentation/brightening/skin tone evening ingredients:

Bambusa Vulgaris Water, Niacinamide, Butylene Glycol, Arbutin, Portulaca Oleracea Extract, Glycerin, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Epigallocatechin Gallate, Scutellaria Baicalensis Root Extract, Paeonia Suffruticosa Root Extract

I've only found it on eBay so far but ill probably purchase it soon as it's the first Nia 10% serum I've come across specifically formulated for brightening/pigmentation issues and the INCI looks really clean (just on the fence about Arbutin). It's $25 on eBay (which is a tad inflated) and was released December 2016 so not much info on it now.

Althea (and others) I thought Boots sold the Eucerin? Why oh why does everything I recommend become discontinued. I'm personally not fond of entire ranges, it's really rare that a range is good across the board (and it's a bit old school marketing/thinking these days). How's your skin currently? I need to go back and reread everything but it would be useful to know what you're using now and whether that's working for you or not.

TO Vit C 23% tips:

No need for the fridge - it's stable, what's it doing for you consistency wise in the fridge Pupsie?

Hold tube upside down before opening.

Place three small dots on finger tips. Close lid and imprint three dots on same fingers of the opposite hand. Dot all over face evenly then pat in gently. Leave alone for minimum of 30 seconds.

I personally have never found much evidence against body scrubs in the way there has been for the face since body skin is significantly more resilient but there are some who think it should be avoided there too. I do see a lot of improvement with dry brushing for ingrown hairs and KP but not with scrubs. Yes, BHA, lactic acid (though I've found other AHAs equally effective and easier to source in high % for the body), Urea and Retinol are the KP things to look into. I'm not sure if it's easy to find but over here we can purchase Calmurid Creme (the OTC version without hydrocortisone) from pharmacies which is a 10% Urea and Lactic Acid (% unknown) cream, specifically formulated for Ichthyosis (fish like scale skin) and KP. It's around €13 and has no mineral oil in it (which most of the Urea based creams do - for me personally my KP worsens significantly with heavy occlusive creams).

For ingrown hairs the best results I've seen are with high % AHA body lotions or using up exfoliating toners from the face, I also always use the remnants of P50 on the pad on my upper arms, elbows + knees, and bikini area. I have a draft doc for KP in the works, I'll try to put it up one of these days. I've also been tempted to buy the TO peel and try it on my KP as 30% isn't an insane concentration for the body. Ahem, Dulci Easter Smile
