Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5

For those who are taking a peek and wondering whether previous threads are worth reading, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Deviations on this thread are mostly my fault. Grin

If you're in need of some advice coming to grips with your skincare routine please don't hesitate to ask, we don't bite, only occasionally sting with a bit of Biologique Recherche P50 now and then Wink. Just make sure to state clearly what your concerns and needs are in as much detail as possible, skincare is highly individual and a random recommendation for a 'good' product will be completely different from one person to the next.

Make sure you've read the earlier threads (or at the very least the first one) so we're not being asked to answer previously raised questions. It takes a lot of time and effort to answer these queries and often the answers can be found in previous threads, but if you still have questions relating specifically to you, use the following form to make life easier on us. We generally answer one a day on a first come first served basis. Not everyone will have answers and sometimes we can't answer you at all. We're only a bunch of amateurs that can respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I will get the foundations on my face the minute they arrive Grin
botemp - I have to say TO 1% retinol has made the most difference to my skin in days. I seem to be through the horrible peeling patch and am going v v easy with it! But I have baby skin! It's amazing

babyturtles · 17/04/2017 13:10

Thanks Botemp, I'll give them a read.

The picture is just from google images to demonstrate what they are.

Ollivander84 · 17/04/2017 15:34

Bought some of these products at tesco today. Not mega cheap but the shea one smells amazing. They have a link on their site to the formulations and support water aid etc, seems a good company

mintmagnummm · 17/04/2017 16:05

Olli I bought the soaper duper Shea body wash, it smells delicious doesn't it!.

mintmagnummm · 17/04/2017 16:05

Why does no one seem to comment/advise on my questions? Maybe I ask too many Confused

Ollivander84 · 17/04/2017 16:06

It's lovely, I got the hand wash and body wash and the tuberose one

Ollivander84 · 17/04/2017 16:11

mint - I don't answer because I usually don't know Grin as I'm still learning
Makeup questions I can do!

Shop · 17/04/2017 16:38

Is that the new range from soap & glory founders?

RubyGoat · 17/04/2017 16:46

Right. I'm definitely going to have to start going to bed a lot earlier, so I have time for the dry brushing in the morning before I shower...

I'd be very interested in feedback on the TO foundation colours, particularly the ones towards the paler end. I'm usually 001 / porcelain etc, or the palest pink tone there is, but often that is still a bit too dark for me & I look tangoed. Would be good to know how they compare to some specific high street shades.

I think my DH would admit he's also a bad influence... Grin

Ollivander84 · 17/04/2017 16:50

Shop - Google says it's the woman behind bliss and soap and glory so I think so!

Lego - I will feed back asap when the foundations arrive. Will probably slap the serum on one side and the coverage on the other! The swatches look fairly pale
If you're after pale then illamasqua, makeup forever, Lancome teint (shade 008), revlon colourstay, l'oreal infallible are all ones I've used and found pale enough

RubyGoat · 17/04/2017 16:54

Mintmagnummm - re your serum question - I'm sure Bo or someone else will have some thoughts on the ingredients. However one thing that jumped out at me was the tocopherol. AFAIK that's the name for vitamin E from a vegetable source. I know from personal experience that I break out in response to wheatgerm oil, which is one of the sources of vitamin E. It might not be that that's causing the problem, but it's possible?

Ollivander84 · 17/04/2017 16:57

Yeah the only thing I know about spots + ingredients is that purging only happens from actives. So retinol and AHA etc may cause you to purge in places you usually have spots
But if I started using say a moisturiser with no actives or low amounts and broke out on my cheeks then that's a reaction/not suitable
If that makes any sense at all!

AltheaThoon · 17/04/2017 18:31

@botemp , my skin is so much better now, thanks. The redness and burning has disappeared and i seem to have combatted the dryness so it was definitely worth me joining this thread!

I don't know if the Eucerin has been discontinued - I just couldn't find that exact product. I'm now using LRP Toleraine Dermo-Cleanser, still using the LRP Cicaplast on dry patches and Avene Hydrance moisturiser. I just bought some of the Superdrug Pure Hydrating Serum but haven't used it yet. I just need to find a good SPF to use daily now.

Today was the first day that i put makeup on since the incident and for the first time in i don't know how long, my skin didn't crack up or feel tight. It's quite amazing!

Is it a good idea to stick with products that work or should you alternate? I'm just wondering if my skin will eventually 'get' used' to these products and start drying out again?

Thanks so much to everyone for their suggestions. Smile

mintmagnummm · 17/04/2017 18:54

Thanks olli and lego I have no idea whether vit e derivatives break me out so that's one to think about. The spots are mostly on my neck which is one of my trouble areas tbh. My skin going through a crap phase again at mo, have started using spf 50 daily so maybe I'm just adjusting to that (I am double cleansing) plus have just come off my period which is when my skin goes crazy which is slightly weird.

Olli if you do put half n half of those foundations on can u post a pic so we can see the differences on each side of ur face please?

Ollivander84 · 17/04/2017 18:54

My theory is stick with what works. If you find you need to change then change but otherwise don't fix what isn't broken!

Ollivander84 · 17/04/2017 18:55

mint - yes of course, it may be tricky with lighting but I can always swatch them side by side on my wrist tattoo to show coverage as well

mintmagnummm · 17/04/2017 18:57

Thanks olli my problem is u dunno what works ha ha.

Have you got any mascara recs seeing as ur a makeup junkie lol

AltheaThoon · 17/04/2017 19:55

Sorry mint, I'm soaking up as much advice as i can at the moment, I'm definitely not in a position to give any out! Grin Otherwise I'd happily try to help. Smile

mintmagnummm · 17/04/2017 19:57

Thanks Althea that's ok

Ollivander84 · 17/04/2017 21:00

Mint - yep. However mascara is v v individual. If you've ever seen that maybelline great lash one on the pink and green packaging? That was like Americas best selling but I hate it as do a LOT of other people
However! Here are some that the majority seem to like

Lancome hypnose
Lacura (Aldi) 3D or their magic curl one
Seventeen HD falsify
Max factor masterpiece max
L'oreal million lashes
Benefit roller lash and the I'm real both seem to be love or hate so if you see a sample on a magazine they're worth a go

mintmagnummm · 17/04/2017 21:24

Thanks for that olli do u have any personal faves?
Ur right about it being v individual, lots of people love the L'Oréal telescopic but I hated it, also max factor masterpiece wasn't good for me but lots love it!

The neck is one of my problem areas too. Sympathy, it's very annoying isn't it. I've started changing my pillowcase more frequently in an effort to reduce the breakouts (I have very short hair & often wear a fair bit of product in it, so it gets on the pillow). I think it's helping, a bit. Much like having frequent change of face towels & washing cloths if you use them, I use Cheeky Wipes.

Ollivander - L'Oreal is the only high street (i.e. cheap) brand I've found that goes pale enough for me, & even that seems just a touch too pink / dark in winter. Never tried any of the others, primarily due to the price.

EnidButton · 17/04/2017 21:52

Lego I'm one of the palest people you'll ever meet and the Lancôme 008 shade is fine for me. Illamasqua skin base in 02 is really pale and doesn't oxidise at all but I find it tricky to work with. There are a lot more brands doing very pale and very dark shades now rather than just the shades of beige on the middle so might be worth having another look at counters you've previously discounted.

EnidButton · 17/04/2017 21:53

Lancôme will give you a mini tube to test of the newly formulated teint idole 24hr foundation atm. Mine's lasted ages. Worth a try.
