Apple shapes: tops to wear with skinnies?

hunans · 10/02/2017 18:51

I have decent legs but a thick waist and hips. I need some new tops which are slightly longer in length (i.e don't finish on my hips) and not fitted but not shapeless. To be worn with my faithful black skinnies.

Any inspiration?

Thanks muchly Flowers

It was this one which was discussed up thread.

I think it will be too short. I've stopped buying tops from Boden unless they say they are long line.

CamdenTownie · 17/02/2017 07:18

Thanks hunans 😊

hunans · 17/02/2017 08:23

I'm wearing this: m.boden.co.uk/en-gb/clearance/womens-tops-t-shirts/breton/wo092/womens-long-length-long-sleeve-breton today (on mobile app so no idea how that link will appear - sorry).

It's the Boden long length, long sleeve Breton. I LOVE IT. Just the right length, good structure but not overly fitted. I have it in the white with black stripes but I'm considering ordering another colour too. And they're on sale!

Wearing it with my faithful black Topshop Joni's and a mustard colour Joules oversize scarf.

I have Boden swing t-shirts and I am 5'10.

They come to below the waist band on my jeans but aren't super long. I most frequently wear them under an open shirt.

SpaghettiMeatballs · 17/02/2017 17:25

I have theee of the long line bretons hunans. I LOVE them!

Thanks lucked. That sounds too short for me. I get really self conscious about tops that aren't long enough. I have learnt this to my cost!

RealHouswifeofBury · 17/02/2017 20:10

I have a week off work as of Monday. I plan to find the perfect dress for a apple, some swimwear and I'm also going to try Asda wondeffit jeans.

Brontebiscuits · 18/02/2017 09:29

Report back please RealHousewife! I have never found a dress yet that works. Combination of broad shoulders narrow hips and pot belly = man in drag Sad

hunans · 18/02/2017 11:09

Morning apples!

Yes please do share your findings, housewife! I'm interested to see what you discover. I haven't worn dresses for a long time.

I have just bought this top to wear with skinny jeans. It's long enough to cover the bum ( longer at the back ) and good quality cotton jersey so it drapes rather than sticks out. Good if you like a minimal look, it's quite geometric and angular.

A bargain for £15. Sizes are generous, I'm a 12 on the bust and a small is a good fit.

I also bought this from Woolovers. Their clothes are good quality but usually very frumpy, but they have a few gems if you look carefully.

I bought it a few weeks ago when it was £30 ( 25% off weekend or similar). The teal is a beautiful colour if you are a deep summer or autumn.

Again, sizes are big - I'm a 12 and the small looks the same on me as it does on the model , so I can only assume that it's pinned in at the back.

It's very warm and soft as it's 20% cashmere, so I expect it will pill as all cashmere does , but I shall shave /comb it.

Useful for my SAHM days with jeans and boots.

absolutelynotfabulous · 24/02/2017 17:19

I'm apple-y due to the menopause. I wear skinnies and loose but not baggy v-neck tees. I'm coveting those joggers linked above, though!

Like many, I look horrendous in high neck tops.

I also look ok in cropped jackets. If the fit is good in the shoulders, but more generous over the stomach, that's fine.

I used to wear a lot of asymmetric droopy jumpers with leggings but found that combo too forgiving.

My bottom half is now noticeably smaller than my top half so trying hard to avoid the "carrot" look.

LexieLulu · 24/02/2017 17:55

Shamelessly place marking this thread to look through all the links people have shared later when the kids are in bed.

I'm Apple with very slim legs and arms, so I live in loose fitting tops, but some swamp me and make me look worse.

I can't do tight fitted, I look like the Michelin tyre man when I do. I need to find a happy medium x

absolutelynotfabulous · 26/02/2017 17:51

I've spent some time on the "apple shape" pinterest site but it's all about larger women!Shock. What about us smaller apples, Pinterest?

Fab41 · 26/02/2017 18:35

Marking my place, fed up making my top half look bigger

JamesDelaneysHat · 26/02/2017 18:59

If you're not overweight, Absolutely, you could be more inverted triangle shape? Have you got broad shoulders?

absolutelynotfabulous · 26/02/2017 19:09

james yes, I DO have broad shoulders. So not an apple after all?

However I'm carrying too much weight around my middle, and I think I'm a bit overweight still (just lost a bit).

JamesDelaneysHat · 26/02/2017 19:15

I think a true apple may or may not have broad shoulders but regardless of the shoulder issue, an apple's main issue is a large/round tummy. And usually narrow hips. An inverted triangle is an apple with broad shoulders who's tummy may not be huge but still has the narrow hips. I'm an apple when I'm tubby and an inverted triangle when I'm slim! If that makes sense?! I will always have a bit of a tum but when I'm slimmer, my broad shoulders and narrow hips are more difficult to dress.

absolutelynotfabulous · 26/02/2017 19:30

I don't think I'm a "true apple", in that case. Sad. I've definitely got a tummy, which these days is a kind of flabby overhanging apron of fat, which I can feel under my jeans. I've never had a stomach. Until now.

I'm old (57) and my shape has definitely changed. If I wear my usual stretchy 10 skinnies, the fit is good on the bottom half, but my stomach is kind of pushed up my torso, creating the "apple" effect. I'm otherwise slim (ish).

I've noticed this on friends too. My slim, very fit friend is tinier than ever on the bottom, but big on top (with norks).

Maybe it's an age thing. I'm quite norky too, and used to be flat. (pancake flat).

thenightsky · 26/02/2017 19:36

The best long tops to wear with skinnies I have found have been from Long Tall Sally. They are finger tip length (bum well covered, but still show off long slender legs. I strap down my E norks with a playtex sports bra if its a high neckline, plus wear a chunky but dangly long necklace.
