Apple shapes: tops to wear with skinnies?

hunans · 10/02/2017 18:51

I have decent legs but a thick waist and hips. I need some new tops which are slightly longer in length (i.e don't finish on my hips) and not fitted but not shapeless. To be worn with my faithful black skinnies.

Any inspiration?

Thanks muchly Flowers

I have some skinnies (knew they were a bad idea but was desperate for them). I have large norks and a huge tum (never been preggers but my god I look like I have had about 6 kids in rapid succession). My legs are not slim but in comparison to the rest of me, I guess not too bad though in skinnies it is the sausagey look (foxy!). So any other jeans/trousers I get now will NOT be skinny!

ElspethFlashman · 12/02/2017 10:31

Yes, V necks are great, and I'm not even that enormous of nork. It's just with a high neck you look like a sack of spuds.

I look for mini dresses in a shift shape.

They tend to be cuter than long tops which are deathly dull even if you do find a long enough one.

Dreadfulidea · 12/02/2017 10:55

They get slated but the handkerchief/ asymmetrical tops work well. I have massive shoulders too and agree 3/4 sleeves look best.
I have a couple of tops from La Redoute and some from Desigual that I bought at the airport. They look like I am wearing them because they are interesting tops not because I am hiding my fat stomach.

WholeL0ttaRosie · 12/02/2017 10:58

Yes to the Phase 8 batwings, they are called 'Becca' and every season they change the colours/ patterns. I wouldn't pay full price for them though.

hunans · 12/02/2017 13:06

I am also large of nork. High-necked tops look fucking AWFUL on me.

I went shopping yesterday afternoon and actually found a couple of things in New Look:

This striped top/tunic. Stripes actually work really well for me and it's a nice way of breaking up block colour without having to wear a proper 'pattern'. It's a good length so could go with leggings.

I didn't try it on but this could work for us apples

I bought one of these which look much better in the flesh.

Topshop, H&M, and Mango had nothing to offer.

Off to check out the Phase Eight batwings now.

dread I just can't do asymmetric / handkerchief tops. It's like a big neon flashing sign saying LOOK AT MY CHILDBEARING HIPS. 😞

I've also discovered Hush Amie joggers. Yes, they are expensive but they are lovely and flattering and, most importantly, AREN'T jeans. I need a break from jeans sometimes. I wear the joggers with a v neck slub tee from Hush. I need to find a cheaper equivalent - good basic t shirt recommendations, anyone?

Kr1stina · 12/02/2017 15:51

These joggers loook lovely but I can't wear tapered trousers , I look like a carrot 🥕

Lucked · 12/02/2017 15:55

For t-shirts the Boden swing tee is wider at the bottom so doesn't ride up.

Cindbelly · 12/02/2017 16:31

As I can't link on my phone I've done a screen shot.
I quite like this, looks comfy, and it ticks my v neck requirements. But I'm worried it's a bit frumpy and I would worry that if end up looking bigger wearing it

I have found my people. Hello apple friends.

I have been advised to wear clothes that give a v neck and to wear empire lines.

I really want to get some cropped trousers, are we allowed to wear them?

BringMeTea · 12/02/2017 16:44

These are pretty good. Drape nicely. Cheap as chips. I wear with hush Aimee joggers.

hunans · 12/02/2017 17:14

bring What's the length like on that? Love the khaki colour.

cind I love the look of that but fear it would make my hips look even larger than they do already.

It's so helpful having all these links and suggestions. Thank you all and hello to the new apples! Grin

Well I had last year's version in navy and it came up big. I have super long torso and it's fine. (assuming it is the same style, looks it)

Anatidae · 12/02/2017 17:30

I know it's frowned on in mumsnet but both sea salt and white stuff do very nice tunics. White stuff have lots of nice empire line stuff

RealHouswifeofBury · 12/02/2017 17:30

Hello 👋

I've found my people.
I'm thinking of taking a different approach to dressing my apple shape and ditching the separates and going for dresses.
Has anyone has any success with dresses ?

Anatidae · 12/02/2017 18:39

Again, white stuff and sea salT for dresses.

FinallyHere · 12/02/2017 18:45

For a choice in a range if colours, have you tried www.kettlewellcolours.co.uk. I have loved some of their things, others the fabric is a tad on the cheap side.

How about a blouson style leather jacket? I kid myself that mime hides my tum, but shows my relatively neat bottom and legs. Sigh.

womanwithoutasong · 12/02/2017 19:13

Best thing is to find a fitted top and then size up, so its still fitted but not tight. What you want to do with thick waists is skim the fecker.

zippyswife · 12/02/2017 19:29

Apple here- lost a tonne of weight but no matter how much weight I lose I'm still an apple!

Hunan- I got some lovely v neck tees from gap. Soft wash well and similar to hush. From the outlet for about £3.

Talking of hush I have the wrap top/blouse. That seems very flattering and a bit dressier without too dressy.

In the summer it's legs out and all about the shorts to draw attention to my legs and away from my middle!!

Kr1stina · 12/02/2017 19:59

realhousewife

YY I wear dresses. Always the same shape, fitted at the shoulder and A line. I prefer them in winter when I can wear with boots / flat shoes and thick opaques. My best length is just above the knee, anything much longer looks frumpy as they are not fitted.

Some apples seem to like wrap style dresses but they are very aging on me.

ElspethFlashman · 12/02/2017 20:33

Yeah I'm a big fan of short dresses. With opaques and boots in winter and Capri length leggings in summer.

In fact today was a short denim shift + leggings day.

I find them much easier to find as you can go into "young" shops like New Look and there will always be short dresses. You just have to know the shape that you need (V/scoop neck and loose around the middle)

Empire line is pure maternity on me so avoid like the plague. Wrap dresses are ok but just for dressy occasions as they're not very cool with biker boots!

Kr1stina · 12/02/2017 20:39

I'm sure there's a biker boot for every occasion Grin

bobberybobble · 12/02/2017 20:53

Try Mango, I have just put a big order through on their sale. I love the floaty yet tailored for of their blouses and jackets.

I struggle with boobs and a bum, so I can't wear anything high necked.

Also waterfall blazers, I Literally have about 12... in every colour, pattern imaginable.

I just ordered another one in the Mango sale too!

Unicorn81 · 12/02/2017 21:19

Asda have some nice shirts just now that are a good length. I've bought a few designs and just put a vest underneath.
