Apple shapes: tops to wear with skinnies?

hunans · 10/02/2017 18:51

I have decent legs but a thick waist and hips. I need some new tops which are slightly longer in length (i.e don't finish on my hips) and not fitted but not shapeless. To be worn with my faithful black skinnies.

Any inspiration?

Thanks muchly Flowers

I've not had much luck with dresses. I wore a shift dress to a wedding in the summer. I thought I looked alright but looking back on the photos, I look like a fat box with legs.

Those Asda shirts are lovely.

I looked at the Phase Eight batwings but fear the neckline would look daft on me. It's too high. Sigh.

Shift dresses look horrendous on me. I think it's the combination of

Straight cut on my curvy body
High rounded neck makes norks look even bigger
Always cut in at the arm to show off edges of industrial strength bra
Always wrinkles around the middle to draw attention to my worst feature
Cut makes it ride up uncomfortably so I'm always pulling it down

YY to the fat box with legs and arms sticking out Blush

RealHouswifeofBury · 13/02/2017 16:24

I bought the Asda shirt today.
Had a look around for a dress but nothing jumped out at me

Cherrypie32 · 13/02/2017 18:59

I'm as Apple as they come, I second the Phase Eight Becca tops and just bought the ombré blue/grey one. I wore this to a party with black leggings on Saturday www.matalan.co.uk/product/detail/s2648065/star-print-shirt-dress, it doesn't look cheap and I don't tie the middle tight.

Cherrypie32 · 13/02/2017 19:02

Some one mentioned the Boden 'swing' style tops which I also second along with these which are non clingy/skimming in right places m.boden.co.uk/en-gb/womens-tops-t-shirts/3_4-sleeved-tops/wl922/womens-supersoft-oversized-top

RealHouswifeofBury · 13/02/2017 19:04

That shirt dress looks lovely

OutandIn · 13/02/2017 19:08

Shirts are your friend- livrly flattering v and they skim. Often overlooked for tops but are so much more flattering for us apples.

Brontebiscuits · 13/02/2017 19:58

Like the star shirt dress! Would it look weird with skinnies?

Cherrypie32 · 13/02/2017 20:27

It wouldn't look weird at all! I've put it with skinnies and leggings. It's really very nice.

hunans · 13/02/2017 20:28

Love those Boden tops.

What's the length like? (I'm 5ft 6ish)

Do you have a link to the becca top you bought?
Seen a few online but stil think combination of high neckline and oversize will makr me look bigger or am I wrong? (Hopeful)

theotherendofthesockportal · 13/02/2017 20:51

Can us apples wear leggings?

Brontebiscuits · 13/02/2017 20:51

Thanks Cherry, is it in the shop now or online only?

Cherrypie32 · 13/02/2017 21:20

Phase Eight top www.phase-eight.com/fcp/product/phase-eight/knitwear/becca-dip-dye-batwing-jumper/402020938#dvt_pha222MSG1_2
I think the dark top, lighter bottom is good combo for big busts and I wore long sleeve navy top under as I don't like 3/4 sleeves.
I bought my Matalan shirt online as don't live near one.
Boden tops are nice hip length, I'm 5ft 5 if it helps. Wash well, nice drapy jersey.

Cherrypie32 · 13/02/2017 21:21

Apples often have good legs right? As long as bum covered I would wear leggings yes!

Cherrypie32 · 13/02/2017 21:28

Boden top only £24 with code A2N6

Juveniledelinquent · 13/02/2017 21:30

I wear leggings as my legs are lovely and slim. I also have slim arms and long fingers. It's just the big in the middle that's fat and wobbly Grin

TheFormidableMrsC · 13/02/2017 21:52

This is me! I have slim hips and legs but no waist to speak of. It's frustrating as I do a lot of exercise and watch what I eat, seems to be a "family" shape. Like the rest of you, large-ish norks, find v-necks very flattering and try and avoid "tenting" although it's not easy to do in summer with so many floaty tops around, which I love. Always wear skinnies and leggings. I find a slightly fitted jacket with a v t-shirt underneath and skinny jeans a really nice and flattering look. Decent undies help a lot too. I long to wear dresses with nipped in waists, but it will never happen Sad

user1471583707 · 13/02/2017 23:12

Thanks cherrypie - that's lovely.
What size are you and what size did you buy in this

HarrietSchulenberg · 13/02/2017 23:19

Mantaray and Seasalt are my favourites for tunics. Also Fatface and White Stuff.

Cherrypie32 · 14/02/2017 07:08

I bought a Large user, I am a 16 with 34ff chest. I was inspired by the shop assistant in Phase Eight who just wore with a long silver pendant, blue denim skinnies and boots.

Cherrypie32 · 14/02/2017 07:09

Mantaray and White Stuff are just frumpsville with a 'matronly' chest Smile

hunans · 14/02/2017 10:48

YY to that, cherry. Their materials, patterns and cuts are only suited to those without norks, tums or hips.

I wear leggings but only those that are more like skinny trousers and not the ones that are like a thick pair of tights.

This is not because of my legs ( which like most apples are very good ) but because it's too much of a contrast with my fat middle. It makes me look top heavy, like I might blow over on a windy day.

I'm sure the tights type leggings would work with a dress or long tunic but that's not my personal style. They are definitely a No No with short tops unless you are under 16.

As a PP said, I'm still an apple even when I'm at my ideal weight. The only time I'm been non apple is when I was ill and my weight went down to 7 1/2 stone, which is underweight for 5' 5" . And of course I looked terrible.

Cindbelly · 14/02/2017 12:10

I'm really struggling today. Luckily it's half term and no plans to go out , so staying in with the DC and a friend is popping over after lunch. I feel like I need something fitted to emphasize the fact that even at a size 16 I do have a figure, but still a bit floaty not clingy to hide my tummy.

Do tops like this even exist?
