80's Fancy Dress... Help!!

ArchiesMamaBird · 06/02/2017 13:51

Me and DH have been invited to a 30th birthday party in March. Fancy dress. "Oh yay!" I thought, "I love fancy dress!" So there I am googling neon leg warmers and tutu's, when DH informs me that the theme is actually 1987. Yep, just 1987 Hmm

Now I've had a google, and the only thing I have found is that Dirty Dancing was released in '87. But I'm thinking that everybody will be going as that.

So clever people of Mumsnet, does anyone have any ideas? We'd preferably like something that we can go as together, but this is not a necessity.

No one wore neon leg warmers and tutus in the eighties!

Think style icons such as Madonna or Annie Lennox, tho the early eighties had much better fashion than the latter part.

Here's some inspiration for you!

Omg did I actually wear that stuff?

FromIbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 06/02/2017 14:38

Here's a list of 1987's No.1 singles which might provide some inspiration ( eg. Bon Jovi, George Michael, Belinda Carlisle, Madonna)

CoffeeAndEnnui · 06/02/2017 14:42

The Lost Boys and The Princess Bride both came out in 1987. You're welcomeWink

Floisme · 06/02/2017 14:44

What a shame, early 80s fashion was brilliant; late 80s was pretty shit.

However I believe the The Simpsons were born in '87 so I would go as Marge.

Films? Three men and a baby, lethal weapon, predator, Robocop, fatal attraction.

Floisme · 06/02/2017 14:47

And obviously your husband can be Homer.

FromIbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 06/02/2017 14:48

A few other ideas from googling :

Margaret Thatcher (elected for 3rd term in office)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Sylvester McCoy became the 7th Dr Who
Fireman Sam debuts on the BBC
Hilda Ogden made last appearance in Coronation Street

MabelTheCow · 06/02/2017 14:50

Simpsons started and there was the massive 1987 hurricane.

TroysMammy · 06/02/2017 14:53

Had a look for you, Full Metal Jacket, Personal Services about Cynthia Payne and the sex parties. First Acid House raves in the UK reported. Hilda Ogden made her last appearance in Coronation St. Kylie released I should be so Lucky. Margaret Thatcher visited Moscow.

Only1scoop · 06/02/2017 14:55

Dp went in Wham Club Tropicana outfit and I went in full kids from Fame ensemble when we did an 80's thing.

TheLivingAsheth · 06/02/2017 14:56

I was going to say Kylie! Her clothes in that video (I Should Be So Lucky) are pure 1987.

If I remember correctly in 1987 I was mostly wearing jeans with massive white T-shirts with bright pictures on, like pineapples, or hideous looking cocktails, and "neon" writing. Either that or striped tops and sailor hats, for some reason. I was 12, to be fair.

ArchiesMamaBird · 06/02/2017 15:05

These are all brilliant! Thank you everyone, I'll show your ideas to DH later and we can have some fun choosing our outfits Grin

TheLivingAsheth · 06/02/2017 15:14

Scott and Charlene's wedding aired in Australia in 1987 (not til 1988 here though according to Wikipedia) if you can find suitably attractive outfits. Grin

CoffeeAndEnnui · 06/02/2017 15:47

Oh my god, Cher! Moonstruck!!!

NewPantsforaNewYear · 06/02/2017 16:31

Please go as Cher!

SarahGoodwin33 · 06/02/2017 16:34

I went as Glenn Close character in Fatal Attraction in a white night gown with my wrists bandaged and holding a carving knife, bloomin scared myself!
it was winter time so I wore leggings AND tights underneath and a thermal vest!

NewPantsforaNewYear · 06/02/2017 16:37

Bananarama looking pretty inspirational.

m0therofdragons · 06/02/2017 17:07

I recently went to an 80s night as a carebear - I was born in the 80s so it's what I remember. Someone else there was Bananaman Grin

Aworldofmyown · 06/02/2017 17:15

I bought a fab 80's dress from here marketplace.asos.com/search?q=80%27s+dress&oss_ss=&mpwa_searchIsSuggested=#q=80%27s%2Bdress&oss_ss=&mpwa_searchIsSuggested=&pgno=3

Once you decide your 'look' this is a great place to find stuff!! My dress was purple and black patterned, shiny, with bat wings and shoulder pads!!! It looked fab.

Weebleswobbles · 07/02/2017 00:57

Season 7 & 8 of 'Dynasty' aired in 1987 - how about going as Blake and Alexis Carrington?

Bread was also airing in 1987 - how about going as Freddie and Lilo Lil?

Or as a homage to the amazing talent of Victoria Wood who passed away last year, how about two characters from her 'as seen on TV' series which ended in 1987? You'd be a smash as Mrs Overall Smile
