I have £35 in gift vouchers to spend so thought I'd peruse the new stuff

What is this monstrosity??

If I'm a flamboyant type looking for a flamenco style dress to dance the night away in - why oh why would I want it in Khaki??

I did buy some pants and some socks recently.....

ShootingQuadrantids · 04/02/2017 20:31

I started a thread a while back similar to this and I STILL think that M&S have lost the plot!

PandoNoPants · 04/02/2017 20:31

I just browsed the entire "new in section" ..it's all ghastly, except maybe the sparkle scarf Grin

..is M&S still ok for underwear? I used to get some ok bits & pieces in there..and tights!

Werkzallhourz · 04/02/2017 20:38

Do you think it was originally supposed to be some sort of light weight summer coat? And something went wrong with sourcing the weight of the material or something?

It just seems a bit weirdly heavy around the cuffs for a dress, and the cuffs seem too long for the rest of the dress. The back isn't cut to be a dress either; there's no darts in it.

I can see how it might look quite good as a tie front coat with a dress or top and soft trousers underneath.

I think it's a coat and someone has put the wrong code on it, so everyone thinks it is a dress.

JennyHolzersGhost · 04/02/2017 20:49

I've found the tights unreliable unfortunately. I stick to Boots tights.

TheFirstMrsDV · 04/02/2017 21:33

I have only just starting wearing tights after years of leggings instead (due to being on the floor with little DCs).
I bought Primark 100 denier and they are brilliant. I am well impressed.

ohgoshIdontknow · 04/02/2017 21:38

This thread has made me actually LOL- particularly those two pairs of trousers.

Thank you posters of links for cheering me right up!

TheFirstMrsDV · 04/02/2017 21:43

giddy those tops are hideous, particularly the first one. To make things worse they call it a 'cold shoulder' top. I bloody hate that term AND that top isn't even a 'cold shoulder' top its an off the shoulder top FFS.

BabyHamster · 04/02/2017 22:04

Awww I am maybe taking this all a little too seriously but I'm starting to feel really sorry for M and S!

Yes that dress is seriously hideous but there's some terrible stuff on sale elsewhere too. Especially tops with those awful bell sleeves. But nobody starts threads about other shops when they spot something ugly, it's reserved for M and S.

Even the shops everyone on MN loves (sainsburys, uniqlo etc) have some seriously frumptastic things right now.

Sara107 · 04/02/2017 22:50

I have always thought of M + S as safe. The place to go for undies, and good for on line ordering of staples such as work clothes. After years of ill fitting and uncomfortable bras, which I blamed my overweight self for, I plucked up courage to go elsewhere. And now luxuriate in comfy, flattering Debenhams bras. My disillusionment was complete when an M+ S order before Christmas had to be mostly returned. I got some tops which looked actually quite nice in the photos but turned out to be oddly sludge coloured and the most extraordinary shape, sort of square with enormous excess of material across the back of the shoulders and not much across the front. Like the designer had failed to notice that actually most women need more space in the front of their clothes than the back! I don't find Next good for me at all, the legs and arms are always too long. Leggings for DD always too short. M+ S for her (7) quite good, the clothes fit well but quite pricey.

RemusLupinsChristmasMovie · 04/02/2017 23:01

Their socks are shite now. Bought some before Christmas and they had holes in after just 2 or 3 wears. I have defected to John Lewis.

TheWoollybacksWife · 04/02/2017 23:09

I've got £50 of M&S vouchers. I will be spending them on wine. And crisps.

Lindy2 · 04/02/2017 23:16

I had £30 of m&s vouchers. I looked all around the clothes dept and then spent it on some delicious food.

PickAChew · 04/02/2017 23:24

I've never been under any illusions about Tu clothing. Bought a lovely top there, once, which turned out to really, truly be a cheap version of a M&S top I had - burnt myself trying to iron the out of shape, overly stretchy fucker after its first wash. Was in the charity shop at the next opportunity.

EnidButton · 05/02/2017 01:09

Can I add Warehouse to the "WTF are you thinking" pile? They've gone off on an absolute tangent the past few months. Although reading this thread I'm a bit concerned that clashing prints, massive flounces and bows and box shapes are in fashion this season. These examples aren't actually as bad as some of the stuff they've been emailing out recently. It's like they're all trying desperately hard to be cool and failing.

It looks as if the model went skinny dipping in Clacton and emerged covered in seaweed 😮

GertyTheGert · 05/02/2017 02:01

M&S are thick as the proverbial - I put a review on their website saying this Spring 2017 stripey tunic is absolutely lovely, well done, BUT I notice it's new yet has immediately sold out. Any chance you could get more in? Its the best thing you've got in, in ages blah blah. Can you guess?M&S REJECTED my review (!) rather than say oooh thats kind of you, we are shite at getting things in that will sell so we shalleth get more in of this type/style. Its lovely, honestly but immediately gone! I knew a gal who worked at M& head office - she told me they all like Yes Men/Women who flatter the most senior buyers (etc) so that they are well thought of as opposed to good st their bloodie job and say no, thats shite!!!!!

Chocolateteabag · 05/02/2017 11:16

M&S does come in for a lot of bashing on S&B threads but I think it's because they seem to resolutely ignore the reams of freely available feedback on what their ex customers want wanted and continue to produce god awful crap. Then we get the business announcements that their sales are down and they've sacked the CEO or got in a new maverick fashion director to "turn it around" or let Alexa run riot
And then?
Nothing changes....

None of the other stores make such a song and dance like M&S so get left alone

The thing is, if you want a good quality basic for work why pay ££ for M&S viscose monstrosities when you can buy from jaegers outlet website for less money?.

Dh bought a navy cashmere jumper from there for £30. It looks great on.

jalopy · 05/02/2017 12:02

But if it were on the Zara website, people would buy it.

It's horrible. Full stop.

Bluntness100 · 05/02/2017 17:11

I also wrote a review for m&s and it was rejected, it was a basic "not as nice as pic, it's poor fit and not very good quality material " or something and they rejected it without reason. They clearly control the volume of negative reviews. Never reviewed again and don't buy from them anymore anyway.

I actually remember the st Michael brand when I was young and there was a certain cache about it. Now if you say something is m&s it's more a negative connotation.

Laiste · 05/02/2017 17:29

It baffles me. They are trying too hard and there's just no need. They HAVE a market. it's:

DECENT BASICS.

Are they not happy with this? What are they - bored with it or something? Why on earth are they trying to flog all this ''challenging'', ''edgy'' fresh off the cat walk stuff?

They have people willing/waiting/wanting to go [back] to them for good basics. To pay a little more for a little more quality and a nice wide range of basic stuff. And here's M&S refusing to deliver. In this day and age. When every business is fighting for custom. Can you imagine the mentality of it? I can't Confused

RemusLupinsChristmasMovie · 05/02/2017 17:49

I walked around one of their huge stores today. They had a good 'loungewear' section, and some of the shoes were nice. Nearly everything else was awful.

They should sell one tenth as much as they do, and really hone everything down to really good basics which people can then 'dress' as they wish. No high 'fashion', no 'celeb' tie-ins, no shite polyester, no stupid colours.

A decent range of jeans, t-shirts and jumpers, jersey dresses, some plain workwear, good, plain nightwear, undies, all in decent fabric and a select range of colours.

Floisme · 05/02/2017 17:53

I think part of their problem is, we all say we'd pay more for good quality but I don't think we've any idea how much it actually costs to produce well made clothes in good fabrics - and pay the people who make them even a half decent wage. I'm not having a pop here - I include myself. I think we'd get an almighty shock. And this, i think, is their dilemma.

Formerpigwrestler9 · 05/02/2017 18:18

Can I add Warehouse to the "WTF are you thinking" pile?
indeed, that's a green and white checked straitjacket that they're selling there if I'm not mistaken

the M&S dress looks like a fancy dress costume
