what has happened to you? Terrible colours and shapes. Hard to imagine anybody looking good.

Ah, Astonished, I thought that was just me! Also 5'7" and can't wear M&S PJs.

TheScottishPlay · 31/01/2017 21:00

I'm 5' 6. I get one wear where pjs fit then they flap after the first wash.

woodhill · 31/01/2017 21:11

Loll at Johnny Hates Jazz* peg trousers. What would Trinny and Susannah say, I thought their answer to everything was bootleg trousers.

Gingernaut · 31/01/2017 21:15

There's a horizontally striped Per Una shirt I like.

It come in red and white or blue and white with an flower and butterfly embroidery detail on the left shoulder.

There are a couple of tops I like, but as a shorty with 3/4 length arms, the sleeves are too long.

The trousers are alright.

While I agree Sainsbury's do have some nice stuff, the luxe sports gear (luuuuuuurve the silver leather effect sweatshirt, guys Hmm), the mustard fetish and this season's ditzy floral prints are fairly laugh out loud funny.

SugarLoveHeart · 31/01/2017 21:17

Johnny Hates Jazz. Ha ha!

All of the shops are at it now. Absolute shite polyester nightmare! M&S is worse because they have to fill an entire department store with ropey tat. Less is more would be a good approach. Another poster mentioned an M&S dress from 25 years ago. I also miss the old Oasis / Warehouse / FCUK & just about every other high street store. I still have good stuff from years ago... I don't buy that Topshop etc is for youngsters, therefore shite. When I used to shop in such places in the 90s / 00s it was good quality! I was young, didn't mind spending on good stuff. Certainly wouldn't pay now for Primark quality. Quite agree about supermarket stuff being same / better these days... So M&S should ditch the fashion angle & target women my age (40) who have known good clothes & want more of it. Especially now that I'm older & want nice, flattering basics. In good fabrics.

I saw this today and it's absolutely fucking horrible. My nan wouldn't be seen dead in it.

whydididothatt · 31/01/2017 22:55

The one on Oxford street is a nightmare with really badly placed escalators lifts and stairs so you feel trapped on every floor and have to search every inch of the shop floor to find a method of moving to another level. It's so stressful. I was in there last week and the staff members were blissfully unaware giving customers incorrect information about which floors products were on etc. Awful mustard coloured clothing.

CherrySkull · 31/01/2017 23:41

i took mom in there the other day and my only remark on the clothes was 'ahoy sailor' while mom (64) moaned about the horrible prints, fabrics and length of the tops.

She only buys their undies these days, she used to dress entirely in their stuff in the 90's and early 2000's.

Now we spend hours roaming around. She's taken to Sainbos jeans and shirts from Primark now.

UnderneaththeArchers · 01/02/2017 08:22

-whispers-
I like mustard, I have an Autumn co!outing so it suits. Not yellow though😁.

MumBod · 01/02/2017 08:31

The DoesMyBumLook40 woman must be on the payroll. She's forever wanging on about all her amazing finds in M and S.

For the most part, they look shite.

bleughhh · 01/02/2017 08:48

It's utterly awful now. The much Instagrammed and blogged about grey (comes in pink too) fluted hem jumper looked quite nice but felt awful in real life. And that is the only thing I've liked the look of for ages. Even the cashmere is 'cut' (well, knitted) frumpily- not quite sure how that is even possible...

TheTroutofNoCraic · 01/02/2017 09:30

I bought a pair of cashmere blend pj bottoms last week in the sale. £11.99 down from £40. They're already bobbly. I'd have been fuming if I'd paid full price!

Narnian · 01/02/2017 09:47

Did I imagine it, or was there a thread a while ago about the general shiteness of M&S where a mumsnetter sent the thread to their head office? There was a response from M&S inviting mumsnetters along to discuss their thoughts on the clothing if I remember rightly.

What happened there? Anybody know? Apart from M&S not taking any notice of their thoughts, obviously.

PetraDelphiki · 01/02/2017 11:06

Presumably M&S have their sales figures for every single article of clothing - so they must know what sells and what doesn't. So unless they are totally ignoring their figures they must believe that all this stuff sells!!!

I'd love to see the figures though!!!

UnexplainedOnHerCollar · 01/02/2017 11:22

It's true about polyester being everywhere – even really expensive stuff from Whistles or Orla Kiely etc. is often 100% polyester. I often see a dress or print I like and then on closer inspection it's out of the question, because it will stick to me, cause static and make me sweaty, bleurgh.

However whoever said about the fake toblerones, agree they are the dogs' bollocks. M&S's ongoing survival may in fact be down to my M&S toblerone habit.

PrimalLass · 01/02/2017 16:15

After posting on this thread I went in today and saw a few things I liked - EVEN IN PER UNA! I think that particular store must have a good buyer/curator.

Lucked · 01/02/2017 16:33

Yes I spent £100 on line last night after browsing the site due to this thread.

TheBogQueen · 01/02/2017 16:40

I like their autograph range.

I recently bought some high waist wide leg blue smart trousers for work and a pewter shirt which looks like silk.

I also fond of their black fitted shirts £12 which look smart with fitted trousers/skirts.

I have to
Confess I also have some really smart black work shoes with strap and stiletto heels and some parent block heels too.

Its merchandising is unappealing though - you really have to look hard for classic items. The quality is really variable too.

but for work clothes on a budget it's fine - cheaper than Boden or Hobbs and classier than Next.

DonaldFlump · 01/02/2017 16:41

ON WHAT?! Seriously, links please. I so want to find things in M&S to buy. I would hate to see it fold, but it's getting to be such a struggle.

TheBogQueen · 01/02/2017 16:42

And yy to everything being polyester - I will not pay £70 for a polyester dress, no matter what label it use.

Bravas · 01/02/2017 16:55

underneath I like mustard too!

For those struggling with pyjamas, I recommend Next. They do a great long length.

Iamastonished · 01/02/2017 17:51

Bravas I bought some long length pyjamas from Next just before Christmas. The legs shrank 2" in a low temperature wash.

RemusLupinsChristmasMovie · 01/02/2017 18:07

Okay - in a bid to avoid doing any work, here is The Remus Edit. Stuff I've only seen online, that looks as if it might be workable in my wardrobe:

Silk shirt If this is actually nice irl I will be snapping it up.

Pink silk shirt

This is very Hobbs but probably too long for me and green scares me The black might be worth a look though.

It wouldn't suit me but I love it And yes, I realise it looks positively institutional.

I really like their cotton and silk mix shirts but they do them so rarely and the patterns are often crazy. It wouldn't work on me but for anybody who likes big, crazy prints this might be worth a look.

T shirt

Good top if not too short

I wore one like this loads last summer

Skirt

Love

Iamastonished · 01/02/2017 18:27

One of the problems with M and S is that sometimes they come up with something really nice, and then only do it in lime green and coral. They need to offer classics in a full range of colours.

TheBogQueen · 01/02/2017 18:55

I think the merchandising is terrible. They could do so much more with the stock but instead everything just shoved onto shelves and racks.
