What exactly is Mint Velvet?!?

So even though there is a Mint Velvet in Muswell Hill quite near where I live, I didn't realise it was an actual shop. Always thought it was one of those random local "boutiques".

Just realised it's a chain but who's it for? The clothes look slouchy but too silky and velvety for work but too slobby for evening. Is it like Toast with less of an edge? Rip-off Ghost? I know that means it's probably not aimed at me but I can't get a handle on who or when you would wear the clothes.

I'm mid 30s, usually shop at &Other Stories/Cos/Whistles and had literally never heard of it before I went on maternity leave.

I think it's nice actually. I have 2 t shirts and a dress from there and love them. Like with most shops there are some things I like and some I don't. I think it's aimed at 30-50 maybe?

SmilingGivesYouWrinkles · 17/01/2017 18:38

My mum buys loads from Mint Velvet. She is 75.

AllTheLight · 17/01/2017 18:38

I like Mint Velvet! It is quite pricey though. I have a pair of trousers that have lasted really well, also a couple of tops. I'm 42 btw.

Floisme · 17/01/2017 18:38

I sometimes try on but I've never actually bought.
It's grey.
Floaty (sometimes verging on droopy).
Grey.
Bit boho-ish.
Grey.
Some nice bits and pieces.
Not many natural fabrics.
££ for what it is.
Have I mentioned grey?
Occasional Khaki.

Blacksox · 17/01/2017 18:38

I think my entire work wardrobe is Mint Velvet. I hate bright colours, so their muted colours suit me. I like the tops which are a bit on the slouchy side so very flattering and casual.

I only like the plain things though.

gastropod · 17/01/2017 18:43

Never found anything there that I like. Tried on a few pairs of trousers/jeans but they seem quite badly cut (I'm fussy though).

Must also admit I'm massively put off by the name. Sounds like a chocolate bar or a flavour of Angel Delight or something.

SunnySomer · 17/01/2017 18:44

Ha ha ha Flo - my one word response was going to be "grey"!

MakeItStopNeville · 17/01/2017 18:47

I would say it's for women of a certain age who don't want to give up on fashion. And as Flo said, very grey. I always find it a bit like Boden, in that there is always something nigglingly wrong with the design, that makes it safe and a little bit, well, boring. I do like their jeans though.

Pistachiois50pmore · 17/01/2017 18:59

Wow, real range of ages. Thanks. Sounds a bit like Monsoon/Phase Eight demographic maybe? Might be a bit girly for me, I like deeply unflattering Scandi sacks...

Droopy stuff cut in an aging and unflattering boxy style

That's my experience, anyway

Floisme · 17/01/2017 19:20

I don't think it is very flattering for my demographic (I'm 60). It's too droopy. Personally, I need a bit more structure than that.

Doobigetta · 17/01/2017 20:13

I've got some really nice things from MV, and I'm 41 not 61. This year they've had far too many nasty synthetic fabrics, though, that I won't touch. They also seem to have gone more for frilly boho styles than the slouchy-but-clean cuts I liked.

Imamouseduh · 17/01/2017 20:50

The real question is why is everything asymmetrical! Actually why though??

MoreBushThanMoss · 17/01/2017 20:55

Actually I'm 29, bought a coat from there 4 years ago (khaki, oversize cape cut military style felt number with massive sleeves) and get lots of compliments about it now. I think the clothes can be a bit "mum on a weekend away in the Lakes, out for dinner at a Gastropub" but the quality is great, and some pieces are q nice

MadameCholetsDirtySecret · 17/01/2017 21:01

The clothes don't change season on season. It is one of the worst shops on the high street imo. I can spot a MV piece a mile off.

Cherryskypie · 17/01/2017 21:02

A load of drapey stuff in the same shades that looks meh but if you can be bothered to hunt through it there's one that, when you get it on, is just perfect and you'll wear loads. I also have a 70 year old mother that likes most of their stuff.

soundsystem · 17/01/2017 21:09

I had never heard of it until last week, when someone on here recommended it for leggings. I got some: they're nice. Thick, no VPL. They are grey Grin

I think it's a bit like Boden? I don't think it's really aimed at me, though (I'm 32. Usually shop at Urban Outfitters, Topshop, ASOS etc).

Ha! I like in Muswell Hill and went to Mint Velvet the other day. It's expensive and grown up.

Dulcimena · 17/01/2017 21:50

I swear Mint Velvet is doing now what All Saints was doing 9-10 years ago, but in cheaper fabrics and a lighter palette. Yes, I think they're aiming for a dustier version of Monsoon.

Ifonlyiweretaller · 17/01/2017 22:48

Apart from the mainly grey palette, I just think everything looks like it wont wash well and will be an absolute pain to iron! And it id not designed for us shorties either...

burnishedsilver · 17/01/2017 23:37

I like mint velvet. I used to buy most of my clothes from there but the price has gone up and the quality has come down so it's just not worth the money anymore.

PollyPerky · 18/01/2017 08:35

I have a parka that people admire and a jumper / top. On the surface I like the look because I love grey and the pale pink, but in reality their clothes are very overpriced for synthetics- mainly polyester.

I am a size 8-10 and the tops are usually so droopy I could be a 12-14 underneath them, so they aren't very flattering. I'm just 60 but am told I look much younger so not your 'typical' 60 yr old.
