How long would it take a pixie cut to grow out?

I'm thinking a year? 18 months? Love my hair short but thinking of a change. Not sure I have the patience to manage the horrid inbetween stage though!

Years ago, Vidal Sassoon training school chopped my hair very short. When growing it out, it took six months of hideousness - then they chopped it into a graduated bob (short). Got to shoulder length fairly quickly after that so probably a year to eighteen months.

There was an article somewhere online about a woman growing her hair over a period of a year to get to a short bob.
I have a short back/sides/longer top and if I let it go even a fraction over 6 weeks it looks dire , so I really wouldn't like to go through growing it.

From what I can remember you need to keep the back short while the sides and top grow then when it all catches up, you get an inverted short bob.

Seems like a lot of planning and styling (and I have to say the hair in the article in question didn't look good at any stage).

So...my answer to How long would it take - depends on your hair growth but mine would be "Never will it happen"

I had my hair cut into an attempt at a pixie cut the April before I did my finals. The following May (I know because I have a picture of me at my birthday party after a couple of hours at a hairdresser in deepest darkest Japan) it was just past my chin.

So, about a year, but that was with no interim cuts at all (due to being in deepest darkest Japan where the hairdresser couldn't/wouldn't handle very wavy hair)

It took me 2 years to grow is hot hair out to a bob. I don't think I'll ever go short again. My hair was sticking out all over the place for a long long time. I couldn't find an in-between style that didn't look like a helmet on me.

I had a pixie, and decided to grow it to a Louise Brooks/Mary Quant type bob. I was having it trimmed every six weeks, so I initially missed a cut, by which point it was a shaggy mess. At my next appointment the hairdresser was able to cut in a blunt fringe (very short) and shape the back in really tight, plus level off the sides. I started the process in June, and had a perfect blunt bob by Christmas - but as I said, Mary Quant style, so just ear length. My hair also grows very quivkly. It was possibly easier for me as I'm a teacher and got the really awful stage over in the summer holidays. If I'd had to go to work every day I probably would have cracked.

I've gone from pixie to shoulder length and it took me 18 months. I'd try not to get it cut too often, maybe a fringe trim to tidy it up, as in my experience hairdressers can get scissor happy! Good luck, for me it was worth it as I now prefer longer hair.

Thanks all! I'll see how I get in. I have tried before but got it cut as I couldn't bear it touching my ears! So will take some willpower!

Mine was a couple of inches long on my birthday one October. By the following April, when I met DH, it was a short bob (like a pp I grew it into a 1920s style bob by having it trimmed monthly so it grew into the correct shape). By the time we got married a year later, it was just over my shoulders.

I have done this a few times and if your goal is long hair (and not just chin length) then I'd actually recommend not getting regular cuts to get the bob / equal length style. The mullet is the fastest route, with some pins and the odd scarf. I usually cut a thin fringe in as well once the hair gets a bit longer.

Ooh not sure I can rock a mullet! I think I'll aim for a short scruffy Bob (therefore hiding any potential different lengths) I'll aim for a cut when it looks dreadful but otherwise hide it as much as poss under a hat (unless at work - luckily I work in a sector where appearance isn't so important - and maybe a headband would work?) Thabks for advice!

I found growing out my pixie really easy. It took a year to get it to chin length. I kept it tucked behind my ears until in was past them and then had trims on the back to prevent a mullet. I got loads of compliments when I started wearing it untucked,people were surprised by how long it had become.

I'm growing out a fringe and it's taken nine months for it to reach just under my chin. I was surprised how quickly it grows. It was really annoying for the first few months but eventually it just blended into the rest of my hair. Thinking of having the fringe cut back in though.

I'm growing out a Pixie cut ATM. Had it cut at the beginning of last Feb and have not had it cut since, until last week when I had the ends taken off and it levelled up (as much as possible). It's now just touching the tops of my shoulders; my hair does grow quickly though (which was part of the reason for growing it out, as I CBA going to the stylist every 4 weeks for a trim).

As a PP has said there were months of looking like I had a mullet! I got through it by wearing a ponytail as soon as I could get most of it into a band, with lots of clips holding up the shorter bits that wouldn't reach.

There are still some weird lengths in it (as my original cut was asymmetric) and it looks a bit flicky, so it still looks quite random when it's down and loose - I spend most of my time wearing a ponytail and will do until it is all one length again. I'm hoping to have it trimmed again in April or so, when it should have reached shoulder length 'proper'.

It felt like a lifetime! I have coarse, thick hair and I suit long hair or very short hair but anything in between isn't good. Bob length was hard work, it only really looked good once I hit shoulder length which I think took nearly three years!

I reckon a year(ish)? I've not managed to get to a hairdressers for a few months and it's grown quite quickly, quicker than I had expected.

How long would it take a pixie cut to grow out?

Well it's been one day.....and my hair hasn't grown! Now I've made the decision I may be a little impatient ha!

I am growing mine out. It's painful. some days I look like Michael McIntyre.

Fortunately I don't have to go out in public too often - and atm can wear a winter hat.

Have gone from 1" on top and super short back and sides to a long side fringe (which I have had to clip back!) the sides are half way down my ears (I tuck behind) and the back is kept neat up my neck but longer length.

I am going away at the end of April - so do hope to be able to h ave a decent shape cut in by then - as pp say some kind of inverted bob.

I do vary between very long and very short hair though - have done it a few times over the years.

Be patient - and get a hat!

I last had my back and sides shaved in May, and I'm currently rocking a hideous mullet effect at the back, and the sides just about cover my ears. I hate it and it looks hideous, but with clips and bandanas I'm determined to get through it!

My hair is very slow growing though.

I had a short short pixie cut last January and with fairly regular trims and shaping its now a long bob. Due for another cut though, the worse thing is the layers. You can't just let it grow - you need trims to let the sides catch up with the back and to take some of the layers off. I went to a longer 'short' style, then a slightly graduated bob. Now it's longer and the layers have lost their shape. Will book appointment today! I'd say 18 months for it to grow out and look pretty decent!

I had a long pixie (so short back in sides, but a bit of length on top). My hair grows very slowly, but I started growing it after Easter 2016, and with regular trims (every 8 weeks usually), it's now chin length. My hairdresser is a friend, who wouldn't let me be seen with bad hair , so every time I went to see her, she'd somehow take minimal hair off, but make it looks as though it was in an intended style, and growing it has not been in the least painful, not have I had an awkward stage (until it was time to see her again, when I couldn't quite do anything with it). I've had compliments on my hair the whole way through. I'm still growing it just because I can, but I do feel as though I've lost some of my identity with slightly longer hair. Having it short made me look a bit different from everyone else. We'll see...

I am exactly 2 years on from growing out a very short pixie. My hair is now quite a bit past my shoulders.
