Thread 1

Thread 2

Thread 3

For those who are taking a peek and wondering whether thread 1,2, and 3 are worth reading, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients for our particular needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Deviations on this thread are mostly my fault. Grin

This January we're doing some added extra chitchat about food and diet and reducing or eliminating sugar for both overall and skin health. Recipe sharing encouraged.

If you're in need of some advice coming to grips with your skincare routine please don't hesitate to ask, we don't bite, only occasionally sting with a bit of Biologique Recherche P50 now and then Wink. Just make sure to state clearly what your concerns and needs are in as much detail as possible, skincare is highly individual and a random recommendation for a 'good' product will be completely different from one person to the next.

If you want help, please do read through the previous threads first. It takes a lot of time and effort to answer these queries and often the answers can be found in previous threads, but if you still have questions use the following form to make life easier on us. We generally answer one or to two people a day on a first come first served basis. Not everyone will have answers and sometimes we can't answer you at all. We're only a bunch of amateurs that can respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly either.

True for most of Palmers stuff sadly....

Here's my menu for the month - it'll be assembled out of these basically. One for lunch and one for tea Grin so I just have my breakfast to prep for myself

Hypoallergenic yet it contains fragrance Hmm. Nothing wrong with it per se, a few ingredients I wouldn't be wanting in there myself but that's more preference, but it's pretty much a jar of Olay without the parabens and some beeswax thrown in. High in Niacinamide which is nice (but not everything and everything else of interest are after phenoxyethanol so less than 1%, ie. unlikely to do much), looks to be a thicker consistency so a sleep mask/heavier night cream for mature skin and has a bit of Matrixyl in it but no way enough of a concentration to make an impact. I'm guessing the praise is on the back of texture and a bit of plumping come morning?

Grin bo I think it's the tardis....The Palette is a very pretty marbley pale colour...
Ok, so I just did my TO re-orders and went for
HA moisture thing (repeat)
matrixyl
Azelaic acid (wanted to try before for rosacea but was out of stock)
Marula oil (for no good reason but to get free shipping prob use on my hair)
Also finally ordered some BHA from PC with various samples of their Calm range and the clear range (for DD who is finally accepting some help with her poor skin)
Stepping away from the online shopping now....for now.....

AuroraPolaris · 15/01/2017 20:27

Bo this is the eBay seller I found -

http://m.ebay.nl/itm/Manyo-Factory-4GF-Eye-Cream-Whitening-Anti-Wrinkle-30ml-Pure-Natural-/331810659690?trkparms=aid%253D222007%2526algo%253DSIC.MBE%2526ao%253D1%2526asc%253D20150519202348%2526meid%253D59bb52cd1fda4edd9cd3b5b787f1c83a%2526pid%253D100408%2526rk%253D1%2526rkt%253D4%2526sd%253D222022128489&&_trksid=p2056116.c100408.m2460

Also been raking my brain for a few days as I could not remember which product that I recently used had a very interesting fungus extract. But have got it now (as it's on my face at the momentGrin) - Narüko Rose HA sheet mask! And the ingredient is snow mushroom extract. Plus it has licorice extract both quite high up in the INCI.

RubyGoat · 15/01/2017 20:42

Bo - I don't use the Lumea on my legs any more. Just my face (hormone issues). I do use BHA but just at night. Is it sufficient to ensure it's properly washed off in the morning, or should I refrain from using the BHA for a couple of nights before I use the Lumea? Unrelated to the Lumea, but I do use a SPF50 if I'm going out at all.

I used to use the Palmers body lotion - not that particular one, admittedly, it was one of their nicer smelling lines (think I mainly bought it so I'd smell like chocolate) Blush I stopped using it when I realised I was getting the occasional spot on my legs, which I'd not had before, & put it down tp the lotion. User I don't know if the Ameliorate cream would help but it's a bit out of my price range. For KP, I just go for anything with urea, lactic acid and/or salicylic acid in it, I'm not looking for perfect, just affordable & quick to apply TBH.

Aurora - if you are (unlike me) a fairly organised sort of person, & can afford one, then go for it! Like I said before, it definitely works. I just didn't have time to do it at the correct intervals, for various reasons. And the problem with that is that all the hassle of the frequency of treatment of the early days has to be gone through again. Whereas if you can be disciplined / manage to find the time at the correct intervals, it's not too hard to keep up with once the initial stages of treatment are done.

bo You can sign up to the Times and read 2 articles per week for free. I've used it for India's column a few times. Although her recommendations are very hit and miss for me personally as we have very different skin and hair.

catgirl1976 · 15/01/2017 21:02

Hello - I'm looking for some help on sorting out my skin! I've answered the questions below - I hope that's right :)

Skin type:* Combination. Oily t zone, the rest is ok

*Approx age (range): 40

*Primary skin concern: My skin is dull. I'm really pale and look washed out and grey. I get spots on my chin and cracking at the corners of my mouth.

*Routine : None. It's a disgrace. I often sleep in my makeup. I wash with soap and water in the morning. I don't moisturise

AM : Wash face with soap and water

PM : Fall asleep. I have a bath 5 out of 7 nights and wash my face with soap and water but no other products. Maybe 2 nights a week I fall asleep with my make up on. Try not to judge, at least I'm here trying to make amends :)

Makeup : Foundation, face powder then pretty full make up

Occasional treatments: None so far but I've got fillers booked on the 30th

Things I've tried in the past with disastrous results: Nothing to date

Things that are really working well for me now: Nothing

Any dietary/health concerns/pregnant: No

What I'm willing to spend on a single skincare item: eg. >£10, £10-20, £20-50, £50-100, no limits. If it works (really works) and I would only have to buy once or twice a year I'd got £50 - 100 +. For everyday stuff I'd say £10 - £20

I specifically [want help with/am looking for a product to/am curious about trying]: Getting rid of my spots, getting a glow and not looking grey and dull, looking younger and tighter

Thank you!!!!!!!

EnidButton · 15/01/2017 21:03

Stainless Yes I don't have much patience waiting for things I've ordered online. Grin But I ordered on the 3rd and it arrived yesterday which really isn't bad at all. I was just getting prematurely impatient as it said it'd arrive on the 1st of Feb. When did you order your snail goo?

Skinfulnappies46 · 15/01/2017 21:23

Thanks bo didn't think it would be as wonderful as India made out. Not really swayed much by her anyway . Have a feeling she is easily swayed. Would like to like Sali Hughes but I do find she will often prefer the more expensive brands.

botemp · 15/01/2017 22:05

Depends what you define as dodgy, OpenMindedSceptic. Nothing blatant screaming out beyond avobenzone which is a very common UV filter but a slightly unstable one, as long as it's not the only UV filter it isn't an issue. Alcohol is something I'm usually not a fan of in skincare but in SPF it's very functional and has a purpose.

I had an eBay browse too, Aurora. Found the other masks for $15, very tempted to get those but I have to finish up all my Naruko ones before April and I think I have at least six or so.

I know, Enid, but I can't get over the mental threshold of signing up with Evilcorp Murdoch, even if it is the Times. Funnily enough, I've only ever read India Knight's non-beauty stuff and I like listening to the Radio show she and Sali Hughes put on every few weeks on Soho Radio, not very beauty focused (dependent on guests) but they do talk a lot surrounding it.

catgirl1976

I’m half tempted to get you to delay your fillers appointment. Not that I’m against fillers if you want them but I think a few weeks of proper and consistent skincare and especially cleansing properly may help address the issue without the price tag.

Where to start

The basics: Keep your face away from the shower water, it's too hot. Baths aren’t any better. All skincare cleansing happens at the sink. Tepid water, clean flannel every day. Wash hands before starting routine. Acids and retinoids need to be introduced slowly, some purging may occur but should not continue, nor should continued irritation with any product. Generally introduce products slowly (cleansers are exempt from this), 2 weeks apart.

The most important thing is to start mapping out the time you’ll take for yourself on the daily. The most important routine in the PM is always at the risk of being hurried or forgotten. It really is a point of it becoming a habit which it’ll become soon enough with continued use but some tricks to actually make it happen are the following:

-Tying it to dental care: cleanse first, then brush teeth etc. (assuming you’re at least dedicated to this 2x a day), then finish up routine.

-Doing your routine as soon as you get home from work/after dinner/with DC around bedtime or equivalent to have it done early in the evening around a set moment and not needing to worry about it or feel too tired for right before bed.

-Moving everything but your cleansing routine out of the bathroom so you can’t be harassed out of there during the morning rush, take time in a more peaceful setting or whilst doing other things, etc.

  • In terms of tools it’s probably worth getting a set of dedicated flannels to be used once a day (I prefer the plusher top of the line ones from Primark, the ones from Ikea 10 for a pound or thereabouts are a bit rougher and not suitable for sensitive skin but may be fine for others, some may prefer muslin, etc.)

  • Product wise you’ll want to find an SPF you’ll enjoy wearing on a daily basis first and not an SPF in another product such as moisturiser or makeup. These are rarely broad spectrum and often don’t provide the promised coverage. You’ll want an SPF30+ in winter and SPF50 come summer time. If you can find one you like that is sweatproof great, otherwise, you’ll most likely need a separate one when spending long periods of time outdoors and/or doing exercise.

  • If you can only manage the bare minimum on the daily then it should be cleansing + SPF in the AM and cleansing + moisturiser or facial oil in the PM. In saying that it’s also a good strategy to keep your routine small to start to keep it both manageable and achievable but also to avoid the inability to track possible incompatible products.

  • Relegate products that aren’t working for you now to body care.

Order of things to buy and try

Phase 1: SPF + Oil Cleanser (for PM) + Cream based gentle cleanser

Phase 2: Moisturiser and possibly a Hyaluronic Acid based serum for hydration

Phase 2.1: If at this point you still feel like you could use a bit of extra moisturiser a facial oil at night will help out.

Phase 3: Start researching Active Ingredients that will address your specific needs/help address your skincare goals eg. Exfoliating Acids, Vitamin C, Retinol, Niacinamide, etc.

Order of product in a skincare routine:

AM

Gentle (cream) cleanser
Serum to address specific need, eg. hydration, anti-ageing, acne, etc.
Moisturiser
SPF

PM

Oil based cleanser
Gentle (cream) cleanser
Acid toner
Serum to address specific need
Moisturiser and/or facial oil

Specifically for you, anti-ageing, relatively resilient skin, combination with dehydration routine when fully kitted out:

AM

La Roche Posay Toleriane Dermo Cleanser (take off with a flannel or rinse off if preferred)
The Ordinary Vitamin C 23%
The Ordinary Buffet
LRP Toleriane Fluid (whilst still available, not the Ultra though your skin probably won’t have issues with that one). Alternatively, the Face Theory Signature M1 moisturiser.
Biore Watery Essence SPF or LRP Anthelios Fluide SPF50

PM

Clinique Take the Day Off balm or oil (Bodyshop Chamomille Cleansing Butter is a cheaper alternative)
Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant (get the travel size and use on oily and blemish prone areas only, 2-3x a week up to (every other) day according to need)
The Ordinary Advanced Retinoid 2%
The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc
LRP Toleriane Fluid, alternatively, the Face Theory Relaxing Night Cream M10

An AHA (as opposed to only a BHA) may be of interest too long term, I always rec the Biologique Recherche P50 but you could try others that are glycolic based.

OP posts:
JDSTER · 15/01/2017 22:34

Further to the information that LRP are discontinuing LRP toleriane fluid, I was in Boots today and noticed it was reduced in price in the way that they do when something is going to be discontinued i.e. Just a random price on a ticket. Anyway there was only two left so I bought them. I haven't tried it before but such is my faith in the wisdom of this thread I thought I'd better stock up while I can! They also had kids LRP factor 50 in the reduced pile. Only two of those left as well so got those ready for our winter sun holiday.
I can't remember what the recommended facial sunscreen is for holidays? I'm combination so nothing too heavy.

Pupsiecola · 15/01/2017 22:35

Glad the P50 arrived tsmummy.

Who is this Angry Chef? Is he on Twitter?

Was having a lovely snuggle with my 11 year old DS yesterday. Until he pointed out some fur atop the outer edges of my lips. Never had an issue before. As I have mentioned previously, I have ALOT of hair on my head, but I'm pretty much bald elsewhere. I guess this is yet another joy of aging...

Evening All,
I'm a watcher of this thread and it's so interesting. I thought I might put on about my own issues and see what you guys think. I'm getting increasingly confused with all the acids and glycolic stuff

Skin type:* Dry and dehydrated. I have lines around my eyes and forehead.

*Approx age (range): 44

*Primary skin concern: I'm sure the lines are worsening although if I drank more water that would help and less sugar. I'd like to look less haggered.

*Routine : I do try and cleanse and moisturise twice a day

AM : Using Balance Me- Cleanse and smooth cleanser with a cloth, I like it feels like my skin has been cleaned. I was using their serum and moisturiser but I didn't feel it was great, I'm using one by Evolve. I like it

PM : Same as above

Makeup: rarely only when Im going out. I find the make up lies in my lines ewwwww!!

Occasional treatments: None at the moment

Things I've tried in the past with disastrous results: Nothing to date

Things that are really working well for me now: Nothing

Any dietary/health concerns/pregnant: No

What I'm willing to spend on a single skincare item: eg. >£10, £10-20, £20-50, £50-100, no limits. Im currently on a bit of a budget but I'm open to anything

I specifically [want help with/am looking for a product to/am curious about trying: Help with the lines as when I smile they look really bad and I feel I look about 90 in any photos of me. I'm also curious about the TO products you mention as again I'm not sure about those.

Sorry for going on, thanks in advance!!!

hollinhurst84 · 15/01/2017 23:09

Stainless - I go there to get a meal to takeaway quite a bit, you pick a carb, protein and your sides are unlimited!
So it will be planned for me, cooked and delivered to eat hot or cold. Delivered twice a week, and I'm getting lunch and tea
I've just told them what I don't like (only one thing, he commented how not fussy I am!) and they do the rest

JDSTER · 15/01/2017 23:18

Hi Thistle. Just to say that the standard advice given above for catgirl is absolutely relevant to you. Obviously the latter part is specific to catgirl. I've used balance me cleanse and smooth but it's quite 'scratchy' with the addition of the oats and i found it leaves quite a film on the face, even after removing with a cloth. I'm sure you'll. get some bespoke advice in the next day or so but upthread is a great starting point.

73kittycat73 · 16/01/2017 01:42

Sorry it's taken so long for me to come back. I just wanted to thank botemp again and will look into the link provided. Smile

EnidButton · 16/01/2017 01:54

I wish somewhere like that was near me Hollin

bo that is very true re murdoch. Plus they send annoying emails everyday. I keep meaning to unsubscribe to them. I like to keep a tidy inbox.

Stainless That is a long time! Hopefully it'll be well worth the wait though. Just going off that little pic and viewing it on my little iPhone screen I feel like you're more likely to be cool toned than warm (yellow) perhaps you are neutral?

Yet More Fantastic Skincare and Where To Find It
botemp · 16/01/2017 08:12

Thistle72, echoing JDSTER. Physical daily exfoliation not ideal and general advice similar to the advice given to catgirl. Need some more info for bespoke advice though. What serum are you using specifically, and are you mainly interested in natural/organic brands?

Stainless, my guess would be neutral and the reason why yellow toned works for you is that it knocks out the redness better than a pink undertone would. I think it's always easier to match to the body which due to the large expanse is always easier to determine as warm v. cool and just match it up with that most of the time. Or go crazy like me and do reverse contouring by putting a slightly more yellow toned shade on the traditional highlight areas which are usually redder than the rest of the face and. a lighter/warm toned shade on the traditional shade areas. I only really do that for some sort of special effort type thing where I wear a bit more makeup (to avoid it looking mask like) and if I happen to have the complimenting shades in.
