HELP! navy and black together, yay or nay?

I'm eyeing up a navy (with a thin black placket) silk shirt. I would wear it to a fancy party with some navy suede booties (already have) and buy some skinny black leather or satin trousers to go with.

My mother raised her eyebrows and told me navy and black should be together. Fair enough, I know v. Little about fashion. What do you think?

They go together well if you make it deliberate. I have a necklace with beads that seem back and navy depending on how the light catches them. I'd make sure the sheen/textures work well together though.

MartinRohdesBellybuttonFluff · 25/12/2016 20:19

I'd say yay. What you're thinking of wearing sounds lovely AgeingArtemis.

Pipachi · 25/12/2016 20:22

très chic!

fiorentina · 25/12/2016 20:22

Yes I think it can look good as long as it's clearly deliberate.

2014newme · 25/12/2016 20:27

Navy and grey or navy and white are also nice. Or silver

eastpregnant · 25/12/2016 22:12

I wonder about this every time I pull something navy from the wardrobe. Probably because my mother also does not think navy and black go together (and she also believes "blue and green should never be seen").

Having observed many stylish women on my commute though, I've concluded that it can look really good. So I say go for it.

I think the bigger issue is when too many colours are thrown together e.g. brown, grey, black, navy, all in the same outfit. That rarely works IMO.

Motherwithflaws · 25/12/2016 22:16

Yes!

RemusLupinsChristmasMovie · 25/12/2016 22:17

Yay - not generally a fan of navy but black makes it acceptable in my book.

taxiforme · 25/12/2016 22:22

Classic jean muir - yes yes yes to black and navy.

lurkingfromhome · 25/12/2016 22:34

Yes it's a lovely combo but has to be good-quality, very black black and navy navy, not cheap or faded or washed-out.

CaraAspen · 26/12/2016 12:25

OP, I like the colours together. Only old fashioned people might think there is a problem. Fashion is about style not rules.

carrie74 · 26/12/2016 13:00

Agree, it can look v chic.

mrslebon · 26/12/2016 13:08

Totally. One of my face outfits at the mo is a navy ribbed polo neck tucked into a faux leather skirt.

Reality16 · 26/12/2016 13:09

Dnt quite understand the pic, that's not navy.

Yes black and navy work well in the way you describe as you have added shoes to match top. Black footwear would have made it look odd

LimpidPools · 26/12/2016 13:09

I love black and navy.

neveradullmoment99 · 26/12/2016 13:17

It depends.
I cant see it working with a navy top and black skirt. However the combo you have suggested sounds ok. I suppose because the blouse is the focus and the trousers are the basics, if that makes sense and the boots are what brings the navy blouse to make a together look.

ChickenVindaloo2 · 26/12/2016 13:40

Kate Middleton has done it.

I dont think thats a navy skirt. Its more of different lighter blue. Also the black top is semi sheer.

fredabear · 26/12/2016 14:42

YAY here

burnishedsilver · 26/12/2016 14:45

Yay - but it doesn't always work. What you are describing sounds like it probably will work.

lizzieoak · 26/12/2016 18:56

Course it works. How could navy & black fall out? I despair of people - if people are going to give fashion advice, they ought to be tested first: by me.

In the future, legions will be trained by me on what looks good and what does not & they will go forth & the look of the nation will improve.

Saw Lesley Sharpe wearing a lovely navy cardie w navy pants and chartreuse blouse on Scott & Bailey last night. Love navy & its friends.

Ilovetorrentialrain · 26/12/2016 19:27

Yes totally works if as others have said it's very deliberately done.

In any case your blouse has navy and black on it already.

OP the outfit you've described sounds absolutely lovely, very chic!

puttingthegenieback · 26/12/2016 19:32

Absolutely yes. A combination loved by YSL.

lizzieoak · 26/12/2016 19:36

Genie, together we can create a New Jerusalem of good taste ;)
