My no1 tip for swooshy hair...share your TOP TIP for hair or elsewhere!

OK, I am lucky enough to have long, thick "posh girl" hair. It does go a bit frizzy but is generally Naice Hair.

Long story short, the other day, I omitted my usual "apply conditioner and comb through whilst in shower". My hair was SHIT. It was full of tugs and dried frizzy and was hard to comb/style.

I can now confirm this is what makes the difference.

Buy a comb and keep it in your shower! :-)

What is your TOP TIP for hair or elsewhere on the body?

I used Loreal elvive hair mask this am and it was good!

I generally prefer conditioners in tubs because they are thicker and you don't give yourself a hernia trying to get the last few drops out.

I have the Tangle Teaser for Thick/Curly hair (the maroon one - has longer bristles than the standard one). I'm really liking it. For both wet and dry use.

Washing hair in the bath is a recipe for disaster - you can't rinse it thoroughly enough and it ends up tangled.

At least use a shower attachment thingy.

Has anyone got any experience of Superbond (it's a bit like Olaplex I think but L'Oréal's version)? I am booked to have this at the hairdresser in the New Year and am hoping it'll be transformative in terms of swish . Will also be having a clear gloss applied. Has anyone had these treatments? I don't really know what they are/do...

whataboutbob · 26/12/2016 16:06

I hear you sorrel my grandad was Jewish and he had a classic jewfro! Hair is also a very personal thing, I just know that after years of looking for the holy grail of hair products going silicone free has worked for me. Some people with straight hair can use silicones with no problem. I suspect the people who use hedrin anti louse treatment upthread are in that category ( hedrin is a silicone that chokes off the little buggers).

itsbetterthanabox · 26/12/2016 16:11

Whataboutbob
I agree. Silicone free is good for some and not good for others. Generally silicone is bad for fine and/curly hair.
But I have straight, thick, coarse hair and going silicone free for a year made it feel dry, frizzy and fragile.

Thanks everyone who responded with conditioner tips! I already have the wide-toothed comb. Xmas Smile

BananaFrittersForTea · 26/12/2016 20:28

Using a foaming bottle for shampoo is another good one- increases root lift

OneWithTheForce · 26/12/2016 21:21

Brilliant thread! Thanks everyone for the tips and links.

fluffycloudland I've had a look for aveeda smooth control and can only find aveeda smooth infusion. Is it the same stuff?

UnderTheGaydar · 26/12/2016 21:29

I need to see photos of these crowning glories.Wink

I might try a couple of these tips
My hair used to be amazing.

UnderTheGaydar · 26/12/2016 21:30

Aveda smooth fusion is amazing and smells divine- tip, use a very small amount!

OneWithTheForce · 26/12/2016 21:36

Thanks under!

I used to have lovely long thick hair but it has become thinner post age 40....
I do think combing through with conditioner helps though....

Was told off by my hairdresser for washing it everyday, she claims this is bad for it, but my roots are oily and hair is flat after only a day.
Does anyone have any suggestions for weaning off daily washing?
WIll start own thread if needs be....

Fruitboxjury · 26/12/2016 22:45

I've just bought SLS free shampoo and a new comb online and am very excited to see the differences! Also shamelessly place marking here for more tips, do you need to use a clarifying shampoo ever? I tend to get build up quite easily as have fine hair, I cut it a bit shorter recently but wouldn't be averse to growing it long and posh again soon. Thanks for posting!

maisiejones · 26/12/2016 22:46

I have fine hair but a lot of it. Straight and very well-behaved normally but has started to feel limp and flat. Anyone use any magic styling products that will give it a bit of texture and lift?

OneWithTheForce · 26/12/2016 22:46

tricky I was a daily washer my entire life from childhood. My mum decided I had greasy hair and I had to wash it daily and I just never changed the habit. I finally decided to try and stretch it out in the summer of this year. I am currently managing to get 3 days out of it. So if I wash on Monday morning it needs done again by Wednesday night but I leave it til Thursday morning. So twice a week washing which is really good for me!

Tips are:

  • to rinse really well to get rid of shampoo and conditioner residue particularly on scalp.

-only use conditioner on lengths, not near roots and scalp.

  • keep your hand so out of it. It's a bad habit for me but it does make a difference.

-Try different shampoos. I noticed that after a day my scalp was really itching. I changed to the garnier one with oats and milk (or something along those lines) and no more itching!! It's fantastic, means my hands aren't tempted to scratch and I can go longer between washes as I don't need to kill the itch.

  • if I'm not going anywhere on the day it's due a wash I don't wash it to try and train it to go longer.
ChickenVindaloo2 · 26/12/2016 23:06

I usually only need clarifying shampoo if I've used Gardiner fructis - horrid stuff, never again. Or something similarly plasticky.

I agreed with leaving hair unwashed e.g. over the weekend if not going anywhere. I cba washing and drying more than max 3 times per week.

Don't rub hair dry with towel. Damages it. Pat it gently.

I've just bought one of those turbans from acquis that I read about on here. Will report back.

Thanks One, have to admit I feel really unclean if I don't wash it in the morning, but I I swim twice a week too which dries it out and think I need to move away from daily washing.
I do touch it a lot too which I know doesn't help.
I try to use products which are not animal tested, which makes it harder as well, will look into dry shampoos I think.
Am wondering if Parlux will get a mention here, as they are recommended on lots of threads on here....

OneWithTheForce · 26/12/2016 23:45

I've seen Parlux mentioned a couple of times already! Must investigate. I've just ordered a silk pillowcase and a babyliss big hair. on the back of this thread. Well the babyliss was on my wish list for a while already.

OneWithTheForce · 26/12/2016 23:49

Parlux are £90 odd! Shock can someone tell me why I need one? Grin

OneWithTheForce · 26/12/2016 23:51

And which one do i need?

trickyex · 27/12/2016 00:22

I did ask that question a while back but didnt get an answer....
They do seem very expensive but might be worth it for big hair?!

OneWithTheForce · 27/12/2016 00:50

I got money from my parents for Xmas and it's burning a hole in my purse. Parlux may be the lucky winner if I can be convinced it is worth it.

Grindelwaldswand · 27/12/2016 01:01

I put coconut oil in mine and leave it tied up during the day to protect it from air pollution when im out and about i also trim the ends slightly myself each few days to keep it healthy and i find avoiding heat treatments as much as possible and washing it with cool/cold water helps avoid oily hair or scalp because it doesn't irritate my pores like hot water would Wink

ElornaElephant · 27/12/2016 09:00

I have thick, dark, straight "posh girl hair" - love this! Think it could look a bit Middleton if I had people doing blow drys on me like her Grin

Another vote for Alberto Basalm tea tree - I've tried so many brands, including expensive salon brands, and find this is my ultimate favourite.

I use the top knot protective hairstyle (both at night and when I'm at home not going out anywhere) and I do think it helps. Will look into getting a silk pillowcase!

Doobigetta · 27/12/2016 13:42

I'm secretly very proud of my posh girl hair. especially because I know people who spend hundreds on extensions
I avoid silicone like the plague, dry it smooth and straight with a nozzle and a tangle teezers straightening brush and never use straighteners. But in all honesty the thing that makes the most difference is brushing it a lot- two minutes every time you've been outside keeps it under control.
