My no1 tip for swooshy hair...share your TOP TIP for hair or elsewhere!

OK, I am lucky enough to have long, thick "posh girl" hair. It does go a bit frizzy but is generally Naice Hair.

Long story short, the other day, I omitted my usual "apply conditioner and comb through whilst in shower". My hair was SHIT. It was full of tugs and dried frizzy and was hard to comb/style.

I can now confirm this is what makes the difference.

Buy a comb and keep it in your shower! :-)

What is your TOP TIP for hair or elsewhere on the body?

Great idea for a thread, OP. I used to have posh girl hair, but in the last year it's really deteriorated and I am desperate to restore it to its former glory!

1horatio, what are the protective hairstyles you wear during the night? Is that to stop your hair getting all squashed and frizzy?

Bestthingever · 22/12/2016 17:10

When dd and I jointly got nits Blush I followed MN advice and combed through with a nit comb while the conditioner was still on. My hair was never nicer and smoother so I've kept it up. Same with my dd.

LittleOyster · 22/12/2016 17:12

Oh, that's interesting. Wonder if the fine tooth comb is smoothing down the cuticles?

Greenteandchives · 22/12/2016 17:23

I part my hair on the 'other' side at night, then tie it back using two hair ties, one top and one bottom of pony tail. Results in smooth and shiny hair next morning when normal parting is resumed.

Freshprincess · 22/12/2016 17:29

I'm running the in the wrong crowd as I've no idea what posh girl hair is. Links to famous types so posh girl hair please?
The Baylis Big Hair makes mine a lot smoother than usual. But I'm clueless about 'products' so no idea what to use to make it swishy.

Bestthingever · 22/12/2016 17:31

Perhaps LittleOyster.

1horatio · 22/12/2016 17:41

little

So... i have 3 go-to night hairstyles:
-a side parting onthe 'wrong side of the head and then a low ponytail. one scounchie at the top, then a few cm down an other one, then an other one... this way there are no braid 'kinks'.

-a really loose braid, also a parting on the 'wrong' side.

-a high top knot, but not a super tight one. It actually gives me a lot of natural volume. Especially if I add a little bit of product. And it doesn't require any heat and safes time in the morning.
That's my favourite because there are never any hair kinks and it looks very swooshy the next morning.

ChickenVindaloo2 · 22/12/2016 19:28

This is the posh girl, swooshy hair gold standard: Kim Sears / Murray

Mine is very like hers, similar colour, length and cut. But not quite as good.

I don't have any good photos - I'd really need someone to take a pic of the back of my hair!

Another tip: silk pillowcase!

Thanks for the "protective hairstyles" idea...I like my hair to flow freely at night - I don't like bobbles in. But I do like those invisi-bobbles that look like a telephone cord.

Sugar magazine circa 1995

Mainly here to say how much I loved that magazine. I've regretted throwing away my huge collection at least once a year since 1998. Lovely glossy magazine that made me feel grown up.

I also have swishy 'posh girl' hair so maybe there's a link there. Xmas Grin It was full of Top Tips so perhaps we've been subconsciously carrying them out for the past 20 years.

Newtssuitcase · 23/12/2016 07:29

Ive had silk pillowcases for a few years now. I'm not entirely sure it makes any difference. Feels nice though.

GrumpySausage · 23/12/2016 07:44

I have swooshy hair, am often told it's my best feature. preens

I swear by vosene shampoo. Have used it for years and if I have to use something different my hair goes to shit.

I also agree with the protective hairstyles. Keeps volume and saves so much time.

Also, sorry but I think good genes are kinda important...... I've inherited my dads crazy thick hair which I'm grateful for. My dad also now he's nearly 70 and is still sporting a full head of thick ginger hair!

whyhastherumgone · 23/12/2016 07:48

Jealous of all your swishy hair. Mine is ridiculously fine and just seems to sort of hang there limply.

Might try some of your tips and hope for a posh hair transformation.

1horatio · 23/12/2016 10:38

My mother, who used to have super swishy dark red brown hair, has gotten thinner hair in her age.

She uses Castor and Coconut oil as a night mask once a week and it seems to help. I also put that on my lashes and eyebrows Blush but I haven't been doing it for very long, so no idea...

Fozzleyplum · 23/12/2016 12:24

I'm told I have posh girl hair which regularly gets commented on by strangers. If left to its own devices, it's mad and frizzy, and it's always a mess in the mornings.

I wash it every morning using watered down shampoo - Aldi version of Head and Shoulders is good. Then I use a conditioner for dry hair, then serum or Moroccan oil, and sometimes a spray of leave in conditioner.

I section the hair and dry it in sections, round a very large brush, finishing with a shot of cold air. A good hairdryer helps; I have an Elchim.

BiscuitCapitalOfTheWorld · 23/12/2016 12:56

My personal stuff for good hair is condition-wash-condition, followed by a dab of John Masters Silk Protein Styling Gel and then air dry.

The [http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/forum.php?s=b37a1e39266c3d996226f24eff957526 long hair community forum] has a lot of goldhough. Full of real life Rapunzels. There's a photo on it somewhere of a woman who has to sit on the branch of a tree to let her hair down, it's so much longer than she is tall! The legend is that she cut it off to sell it to fund surgery for her beloved pet dog.

BiscuitCapitalOfTheWorld · 23/12/2016 12:57

Ahh, link fail long hair community foru full of gold though!

Riversiderunner · 23/12/2016 13:02

Even if you're not a MN regular you can work out posh girl hair!

I am posh but don't have it Xmas Sad

However I have made my thin hair infinitely better with regular keratin treatments - wish I'd found them years ago!

vintagechick43 · 23/12/2016 13:09

Oooh love this thread !!
My top tip is to do a finale rinse in cold water, leaves your hair lovely and shiny.

WanMairChoon · 23/12/2016 13:33

Mane n Tail shampoo guys, the ultimate in posh.

BiscuitCapitalOfTheWorld · 23/12/2016 13:42

If I said non mustachios WanMairChoon what would that mean to you?

LittleOyster · 23/12/2016 15:19

Ooh, thanks very much for the tips on overnight hairdos. Smile

Thanks to this thread, I have dug out my bristle brush and started using it again. Can already see some improvement - it's lovely and smoothing and I can feel it invigorating my scalp.

Wish Mumsnet would invite Kim Sears on for a web chat so we could quiz her. Those photos... so jealous! Envy

LittleOyster · 23/12/2016 15:22

Ps. A tip from my mum, who at 65 still has enviably thick and lustrous hair: drop all the chemical laden products and just use Alberto Balsalm. Think there might be something in this, as my hair was always great when I used these cheapies. Just Googled and apparently they're silicone free and low in SLS....

whyhastherumgone · 23/12/2016 15:26

Just tried the conditioner combing trick and it's made such a difference to my rubbish fine hair! Can't believe it, wish I'd known about this years ago. Thank you hair gurus, I am not worthy.
Scurrying off to read the rest of the thread now

Bestthingever · 23/12/2016 15:35

Alberto balaam is great but I found it need to take a break from it now and again as it starts to build up on my hair. Since the dreaded nits hit we've been using the tea tree Alberto balsam as the helpful lady in Lloyds pharmacy reckoned it repels nits! I can't yet vouch for that it's only been a few weeks!
