My no1 tip for swooshy hair...share your TOP TIP for hair or elsewhere!

OK, I am lucky enough to have long, thick "posh girl" hair. It does go a bit frizzy but is generally Naice Hair.

Long story short, the other day, I omitted my usual "apply conditioner and comb through whilst in shower". My hair was SHIT. It was full of tugs and dried frizzy and was hard to comb/style.

I can now confirm this is what makes the difference.

Buy a comb and keep it in your shower! :-)

What is your TOP TIP for hair or elsewhere on the body?

Will these tricks work on bag lady hair, because thats what I've got

Theromanempire · 23/12/2016 15:43

Interesting tip about combing through conditioner. My hair is always super swishy after I have been to the hairdressers and I assumed it was the products and/or the blow dry method but maybe it is the fact they comb through conditioner??

ClarissaDarling · 23/12/2016 15:43

Yes please HQ Kim on so we can get hair advice! Am also following the antithesis thread of this as I have shitey thin hair- posh girl hair is my dream!

LittleOyster · 23/12/2016 15:43

Yes, I can't wait for my hair to get dirty so I can try the comb thing. I am also going to condition-wash-condition....

YourFace · 23/12/2016 15:49

I've got posh girl elbows. Also the lower part of my big toes are upper, middle class.

BoreOfWhabylon · 23/12/2016 15:49

Comb through conditioner.

Final rinse with jug of cold water with generous slug of vinegar.

Avoid heated appliances as much as possible.

Silk pillowcase.

1horatio · 23/12/2016 16:03

Tried the vinegar thing today (just a very large glass of cold water with a splash of apple cider vinegar, I was a bit sceptical of it, tbh) and my hair looks shiny and voluminous, nearly as swishy as usual. Despite not having time to properly blow dry it...

Next time I'll blow dry it properly and use the vinegar rinse again. I'm curious to see what results I'll get.

dudsville · 23/12/2016 16:36

I also swish. I use a rich conditioning mask each time I wash it (scalp to ends, might be too much or too heavy for some but my hair drinks it up). I comb it through and get on with the rest of my shower. I blow dry. No products. Shiny swishy hair for 2 or 3 days!

ChickenVindaloo2 · 23/12/2016 22:01

Hello swishy sisters and trainee swishers! Ah yes I'd forgotten re the final blast of cold water in the shower. I do the final blast of cool air with the hairdryer. All VERY Sugar magazine top tips😁

Does anyone with good posh girl hair have a leave-in conditioner they can recommend?

I'd like to try this at home but I really hate rinsing out conditioner. My hair is thick and coarse so it wouldn't object to leave-in, I just haven't found one since an old favourite was discontinued.

ChickenVindaloo2 · 24/12/2016 14:30

Not really, user. I find leave in conditioners too sticky. They often weigh the hair down and look dull. Needing a clarifying shampoo wash due to the build up.

Personally, I use loreal professional conditioning mask (in the blue tub, from hairdressing supply shop), comb through, leave it to soak in, wash out.

THEN just use a light, de-tangling spray (eg one for kids) when combing/drying.

Perhaps you could use a light, finishing serum though.

Another poster may have other product recommendations.

You should find that combing conditioner through means it rinses out quite easily, off the newly smooth and swishy hair!

Drying with a Babyliss Big Hair. Guaranteed Kate Mid hair every time!

ChickenVindaloo2 · 24/12/2016 14:34

BTW if you google "shower comb" there are lots of wide-tooth combs with hooks on the end for easy hanging up. There's a pink one for £1.49 in superdrug.

Looking forward to hearing if it works for y'all!

This is a brilliant leave-in conditioner. I wouldn't use it instead of a rinse-out conditioner, though: rather to keep it moisturised between washes...

LittleOyster · 24/12/2016 20:37

So I did a hair wash today and tried some of the techniques recommended here:

-Brushed through thoroughly before washing hair and gave myself a nice scalp massage.
-Conditioned/shampooed/conditioned.
-Combed conditioner through with a nit comb and rinsed thoroughly.
-Did final rinse with a jug of cold, carbonated mineral water.
-Left hair to air dry.

My hair is soooo much smoother and swishier. I am excited to think how much it could improve if I washed this way everytime. Thanks everyone who has contributed tips! Smile

ChickenVindaloo2 · 24/12/2016 21:10

Well done, Oyster! Although think how sleek it could be with a Parlux hairdryer???!!

OP posts:
SorrelForbes · 24/12/2016 21:24

I do the pre-wash brush, the combing through of conditioner and the final cold water rinse. I blow dry with a round brush in sections using a Parlux. Once I leave the house it takes approximately 5 mins before my hair returns to its usual frizzy state.

If I tied it up at night or parted it on the wrong side I would wake up with vertical, wavy hair! I despair of my mop.

whataboutbob · 24/12/2016 21:41

Sorrel I had posh girl hair in my 20s and in my 30s it started turning frizzy. I fought back with ever more expensive conditioners until a Kiehl's one left my barnet with all the charm of a brillo pad. Then I tried no shampoo, no silicones and it has worked. I am nearly 50 now so some change in texture is inevitable, but I believe 100% that my hair has been vastly improved. Basically I wash in silicone free conditioner, then rinse, comb conditioner through, leave on 3-5 mins, rinse. My hair is also much better now at coping with damp days without pouffing out.

AppleMagic · 24/12/2016 21:43

My hair is significantly swishier now I have a dyson hairdryer. Before that I found babyliss big hair was good too but I don't need to use it anymore which obviously saves a lot of time.

I think it depends a lot on hair type too. My hair is pretty thick so it can be hard to manage but once it's control it looks very full and lovely.

Fluffycloudland77 · 25/12/2016 08:51

I use a deep conditioner every time I wash it.
I have silk pillowcases.
I use Kent combs, saw cut teeth so they don't drag on the hair, no hair brushes here.
I use shampoo & deep conditioner for aged hair.

When I dry it I use a parlux, then a bbh, then ghds with Aveda smooth control straightening/heat protecter. It was £25 a tube but has so far lasted 6 years, loads left.

DollyPlastic · 25/12/2016 09:16

Hmmm

I wash my hair in the bath, by tipping my head back to rinse it off. I think I may have discovered why I'm a walking mop top.

itsbetterthanabox · 25/12/2016 09:20

User.
A leave in is good but doesn't replace a rinse out conditioner.
I have thick hair so can use both but the rinse out is more important. Use an easy rinse one that's fairly light.
I like lush hair custard as a leave in or a hail oil like loreal extraordinary oil.

SorrelForbes · 25/12/2016 11:58

whataboutbob alas I've always had what my family called a jewfro (we are Jewish!). It's fine but there's a lot of it! A whole head of foil highlights can take up to 2 hours to put in. I'm currently using Sebastian shampoo and conditioner which had made a difference. My hair looked lovely this morning once washed, conditioned etc. An hour later it's already gone frizzy! I need to grow it longer I think (currently just past shoulders) to get it to lie better.
