Thread 1

Thread 2

For those who are taking a peek and wondering whether thread 1and 2 are worth reading we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients for our particular needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between deviations on this thread are mostly my fault. Xmas Grin

If you're in need of some advice coming to grips with your skincare routine please don't hesitate to ask, we don't bite, only occasionally sting with a bit of Biologique Recherche P50 now and then Xmas Wink. Just make sure to state clearly what your concerns and needs are, skincare is highly individual and a random recommendation for a 'good' product will be completely different from one person to the next.

If you want help, have read through the previous threads, but if you still have questions use the following form to make life easier on us. We generally answer up to two people a day on a first come first served basis. Not everyone will have answers and sometimes we can't answer you at all. We're only a bunch of amateurs that can respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Thank you. Think I was also recommended face theory moisturiser or fluid moisturiser? Or is that the same thing? Can't find that either!

ScoobyDoosTinklyLaugh · 26/12/2016 23:12

What's your skin like bracey?

braceybracegirl · 26/12/2016 23:28

Dry. Blackheads. Occasionally spots. Foundation looks flaky on my nose. Possibly open pores.

botemp · 26/12/2016 23:46

Bracey, the likelihood is probably high that you're dehydrated rather than dry considering your issues but in either case don't go for the Clear version of the PC BHA (more suited to oily blemish prone skin). You'll want the PC Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid to try first.

Have you read upthread about dry vs. dehydrated, that will in some degree determine moisturiser choices? The Fluid moisturiser is the LRP Toleriane Fluid moisturiser, it's different from the Face Theory moisturisers of which there are a few.

The linked cleanser from Amazon is the LRP Dermo Cleanser but it's the larger size. You can flannel that off if you prefer, not a big fan of the cotton pad but some prefer it.

Vitamin C is a facial serum not tablets. I don't have your info on hand currently but I suggest reading through it again and probably the first thread for what all the different ingredients are and what they do. I'm almost a 100% sure I didn't suggest buying it all in one go and slapping it on your face as you'll need to go slow and one product at a time anyhow while you finish up anything else that isn't irritating you currently.

HCC = Hot Cloth Cleansing

Except, Enid, if they still have the Drunk Elephant intro sets get some of those from Sephora and then send them to me Xmas Grin

Enid I really like the Sugar lipsticks Sephora sell (well they did in Singapre a year ago. Including a lovely moisturing balm).

braceybracegirl · 27/12/2016 09:22

Hi botemp thank you. Bugger i bought the other one. How annoying!! Yes you definitely said buy one thing at a time and trying it which I'm planning on doing :)

botemp · 27/12/2016 09:29

If the order hasn't dispatched yet, bracey, contact them and ask them to change it, their customer service is really good. The Clear one can be a bit drying if you're not oily.

So weird, it is always the right hand side of my chin. Left side - clear. Right side - about 10 spots Confused

Dulcimena · 27/12/2016 15:57

Hollin do you hold your phone to that ear? Or sleep on that side more?

hollinhurst84 · 27/12/2016 16:21

No and possibly!
I change my pillow case probably every other day and flip it over in between
It seems to go clear skin, clear skin, clear skin, ALMIGHTY CLUSTER OUTBREAK
Although having checked my app, I'm due on in 4 days...

RubyGoat · 27/12/2016 16:23

Are you right-handed, do you absent-mindedly touch your chin when you're nervous, bored etc? I know I make my jawline worse when I'm stressed.

hollinhurst84 · 27/12/2016 16:25

Right handed. No, I don't think so
I suspect it's hormonal but as I have 8 day periods and not long in between them it's meaning I'm spending a lot of the month with spots Sad

Dulcimena · 27/12/2016 17:07

Hollin I have a theory that when it's hormonal, pores sort of get in the habit of becoming inflamed/clogged. Like the first time it happens, the wall of the pore gets slightly thickened or compromised or something, idk. For months years every month I would get a spot above my left eyebrow, same place every single time, no rhyme or reason to it except it had happened before. Sucks but can you take pre-emptive action - perhaps using a BHA in that area a few days before you know it will happen? When I remembered, I would use a mild mandelic peel about a week beforehand with some success. If things are more predictable for you, you may get better results.

Dulcimena · 27/12/2016 17:07

..amd I meant to say that you have my sympathies, hormonal skin woes are a bugger.

hollinhurst84 · 27/12/2016 17:09

Yep I could give that a go. I don't generally use acids as my skin seemed happier when I stopped using them but I could use some of the acid pads I have

I have skim read a couple of these threads but all the terminology is going over my head! I'd love it if I can answer your questionnaire and someone point me in the right direction as I definitely need to start looking after my face more.

Skin type:
Normal to combination. I live in the south east of France and so can get a little greasy in the summer and dry in the winter. Im suffering with red flaky patches at the moment. The water here is full of calcium and very drying, but i do have a all the French pharmacy brands at my finger tips!

Approx age (range):
30

Primary skin concern:
Crows feet seem to be getting deeper - putting me off smiling! Need something with year round SPF and hydrating.

Routine :

AM :
Generally a wipe over with bioderma micellaire water and then wash with a Caudalie foaming face wash, then I moisturise with a Caudalie cream and dab a bit of eye cream on too.
Sometimes its just the Bioderma and then on with the moisturiser!

PM :
Im really bad at taking off my make up and often sleep in it (bad start I know!) when I do take it off I use Bioderma Micellaire water and then out on a bit of cream (either just a standard moisteriser or sometimes I slap a thick layer of nivea or Welda baby bum cream!!!)

Makeup : eg. no/light coverage/medium coverage/heavy coverage
Medium coverage. Usually a light foundation/BB cream with a bit of powder, blush, mascara.

Occasional treatments:
Occasional home treatments - facemasks etc.

Things I've tried in the past with disastrous results:
Nothing really

Things that are really working well for me now:
Not overwhelmed by anything

Any dietary/health concerns/pregnant:
No problems but I know I need to drink a lot more water.

What I'm willing to spend on a single skincare item: eg. >£10, £10-20, £20-50, £50-100, no limits.
Between 20-50.

I specifically [want help with/am looking for a product to/am curious about trying]:
Id like to look after myself a little better in 2017 and know that I could do a lot more to help preserve my face.
I should really wear SPF everyday as even though I don't sunbathe we have around 300 days of sunshine per year so that is bound to take its toll.

Looking forward to hearing your ideas.
Thanks

SheStoodInTheStorm · 27/12/2016 23:48

I hope you are all having a wonderful Christmas Xmas Smile

I am trying to keep up reading this thread when I can but my replying is sporadic!

I definitely think we could set up some sort of trading group! I'd happily send you ladies my stuff that isn't working for me.

bo I don't think you'd have to have a blog to peddle products, the information &a knowledge you have is of real benefit. I was wondering how you were keeping up with everybody's differing regimes!

I have purchased LRP cleanser and moisturiser and am using them with serozinc. Happy to leave as is or add in further products when applicable!

I definitely think you’d benefit from BHA (The PC 2% liquid, clear or normal version) but since you’re trying out the P50 see that through first. They work well together but I wouldn’t want you trying them both at once. I have messaged Pupsie and hopefully will get something sorted in the New Year. Should I start BHA first?

Routine:

AM.
Sunday Riley Ceramic Slip or TH nourishing oil cleanser (neither are suitable j think) LRP Toleriane Dermo Cleanser now using
Serozinc
Just started Zelens vitamin D treatment drops ← finish up as it’s a rather pricey product and reevaluate once finished^ now just using on the odd night^
Skin Owl eye gel ← see Zelens^ nearly finished, will be looking for something else soon - will have to go back through the threads^
LRP cicaplast LRP Toleriane Fluid - again boring as can be but for now a steady partner that isn’t likely to cause reaction.^ now using^
SPF - you can try the Biore Watery Essence, you might also be fine with the LRP Anthelios Fluid (but proceed with caution, reactions to this vary wildly), The Body Shop sunscreen as mentioned upthread is also decent if you can handle fragrance (goes for all of these three).^ will investigate^

PM
Body shop chamomile cleansing butter ← you’re alternating this with Clinique TTDO right, wrt to avoiding the natural stuff I’d keep away from the BS CB but if it’s doing no harm keep at it.^ switched to BS as cheaper than TTDO, don't know if it is doing any harm though as I think I've also been using other products that could be doing harm so hard to pinpoint!^
Sunday Riley or TH cleanser LRP TDC
Have recently stopped using pixi glow/nil+fab pads due to earlier chat You’ll be trying the P50W here so let’s see how you get on with that a few times a week.
Vitamin E mist from body shop ← if this works for you keep at it but I don’t necessarily see a need for it. use it because CH said so ^
Skin owl eye gel
Zelens vitamin D^
LRP cicaplast Stick with the LRP Toleran Fluid for now but if you want something more it’s probably worth looking at the night time Face Theory moisturisers for now.

^Occasional treatments:
Oskia exfoliator - if it’s truly occasional and used when in need and it works for you fine.---- using as it was in a beauty box, usually steer clear of physical exfoliants. Will relegate to body!
Body Shop warming clay mask ← does this do anything for you, by the ingredients it just appears to be a bit of clay with a lot of fragrance that heats up^ will stop using this, figured any mask was Better than no mask! Just makes my skin red. It figured as I am reactive most things make my skin re^d
TH ← ?^ not sure what I was going to write here!^
May Lindstrom problem solver ← A clay mask with Vit C and charcoal, so far so good if you ignore the price but it also contains a lot of potentially irritating spices, essential oils, etc. how do you react to this? not well, it's not a product I enjoy. Won't use again
May Lindstrom blue cocoon ← This contains a lot of shea butter (and other solid fats) and would be more suited to drier skin, I know it’s prohibitively expensive but is it working for you? Are you using this to combat dry patches, which would be more indicative of dehydration than dry skin?^ using this as a 'wonder product' to calm all my skin woes overnight...in reality I notice little difference!^

So in short, I want to get you to a point of a most non-irritating baseline routine as possible and then introduce some other actives that would be beneficial to you, like Vit C, Niacinamide, possibly Retinol, etc.^ *just using the three LRP products for now, will add in whenever you think may be a good time (if of course you don't mind suggesting)^

Also if you are experiencing some dryness and it is down to dehydration it would be helpful to incorporate a HA serum in the AM.^ i would say I have slightly dehydrated skin. ^

Thanks so much for all of your help Flowers

@BriocheBriocheBrioche

Considering the time of year I’m expecting there will be a few requests similar to yours -pretty normal unreactive skin that can be neglected without too much issue but in recent times it isn’t as forgiving about it as it used to be and a new year makes for resolutions- so I’ll preface it a bit for all before getting to the specifics of your routine.

Skincare 101 or How to Get Started with a Proper Routine When You Haven’t Got One or Something Vaguely Resembling It

Where to start

The basics: Keep your face away from the shower water, it's too hot. All skincare happens at the sink, including cleansing. Tepid water, clean flannel every day. Wash hands before starting routine. Acids need to be introduced slowly, some purging may occur but should not continue, nor should continued irritation with any product. Generally (hard in your case I'm aware) introduce products slowly (cleansers are exempt from this), 2 weeks apart.

  • In terms of informing yourself, you’re probably well on your way. The most important thing is to start mapping out the time you’ll take for yourself on the daily. The most important routine in the PM is always at the risk of being hurried or forgotten. It really is a point of it becoming a habit which it’ll become soon enough with continued use but some tricks to actually make it happen are the following:

-Tying it to dental care: cleanse first, then brush teeth etc. (assuming you’re at least dedicated to this 2x a day), then finish up routine.

-Doing your routine as soon as you get home from work/after dinner/with DC around bedtime or equivalent to have it done early in the evening around a set moment and not needing to worry about it or feel too tired for right before bed.

-Moving everything but your cleansing routine out of the bathroom so you can’t be harassed out of there during the morning rush, take time in a more peaceful setting or whilst doing other things, etc.

  • In terms of tools it’s probably worth getting a set of dedicated flannels to be used once a day (I prefer the plusher top of the line ones from Primark, the ones from Ikea 10 for a pound or thereabouts are a bit rougher and not suitable for sensitive skin but may be fine for others, some may prefer muslin, etc.)

  • Product wise you’ll want to find an SPF you’ll enjoy wearing on a daily basis and not an SPF in another product such as moisturiser or makeup. These are rarely broad spectrum and often don’t provide the promised coverage. You’ll want an SPF30+ in winter and SPF50 come summer time. If you can find one you like that is sweatproof great, otherwise, you’ll most likely need a separate one when spending long periods of time outdoors and/or doing exercise.

  • If you can only manage the bare minimum on the daily then it should be cleansing + SPF in the AM and cleansing + moisturiser or facial oil in the PM. In saying that it’s also a good strategy to keep your routine small to start to keep it both manageable and achievable but also to avoid the inability to track possible incompatible products.

  • Relegate products that aren’t working for you now to body care.

Order of things to buy and try

Phase 1: SPF + Oil Cleanser (for PM) + Cream or other gentle cleanser (for AM and possibly double cleanse if necessary/wear makeup)

Phase 2: Moisturiser and possibly a Hyaluronic Acid based serum for hydration

Phase 2.1: If at this point you still feel like you could use a bit of extra moisturiser a facial oil at night will help out.

Phase 3: Start researching Active Ingredients that will address your specific needs/help address your skincare goals eg. Exfoliating Acids, Vitamin C, Retinol, Niacinamide, etc.

Back to Brioche specifically.

30 is a bit on the youngish side for deepening crows feet, have you been a sunbather/smoker in the past? I’m half suspecting this is down more to a bit of dehydration and poor water quality than true ageing, or a combination of factors.

AM :

Generally a wipe over with bioderma micellaire water and then wash with a Caudalie foaming face wash, then I moisturise with a Caudalie cream and dab a bit of eye cream on too. Sometimes its just the Bioderma and then on with the moisturiser!

Honestly, the Bioderma + Moisturiser is probably preferable to the ‘normal’ routine (I’m assuming you’re using the pink Bioderma). The Caudalie foaming wash is not your friend in combination with the shitty French water (it’s not the worst cleanser out there but probably better for you in summer than winter considering the change in skin type with temperatures) and using it after the micellar water is effectively double cleansing in the AM which is really unnecessary especially if on the dry side. My suggestion for the AM would be:

Micellar Water followed by a spray of LRP Thermal Water (or the Caudalie Grape Water if preferred), dab off excess with a tissue if necessary (prefer this to another flannel as it saves washing and doesn’t absorb all the water like a flannel would).

A Hydrating Serum (I know there are a few French ones out there but something like The Ordinary Buffet will probably serve you well and they deliver everywhere pretty much)

Caudalie Eye Cream + Cream

SPF what do you normally use, LRP Anthelios Fluid is good for most, plenty of options out there in French pharmacies, what have you used in the past and hated/loved?

PM :

Im really bad at taking off my make up and often sleep in it (bad start I know!) when I do take it off I use Bioderma Micellaire water and then out on a bit of cream (either just a standard moisteriser or sometimes I slap a thick layer of nivea or Welda baby bum cream!!!)

Bioderma for eye makeup to be followed by Oil Cleanser - if we’re sticking to the French availability, I believe Aurora quite liked the Caudalie Oil Cleanser, not one I’d universally recommend due to the possible irritation with fragrance but you seem to tolerate it fine in other Caudalie products so doubt it’ll be cause of issue. Just massage onto dry skin (max a minute) then remove with wet warmish flannel to minimise shitty water exposure.

2nd cleanse: you have a few options here, you could make a go of it with the Caudalie foaming wash but see reservations above about time of year, you could go in with Bioderma again (though not the biggest fan of this as an actual face cleanser too much) or LRP Toleriane Dermo Cleanser, and taking in the shitty water once more, for you it might be preferable to use on a cotton pad. Again follow all up with Thermal Water spray and tissue off excess if necessary.

Buffet Serum for dehydration - not a major problem if you don’t get this in at night provided you did in the morning, this slot is also open to other targeted serums in the future once you’ve got the routine settled.

Caudalie Eye Cream + Cream and you can look into a Caudalie oil Aurora loves with a passion (but I’ve forgotten which one it was so she’ll have to chirp in at some point).

Wrt to the crow’s feet, first line of attack is daily SPF and hydration and you can also look into LRP Redermic R for eyes to try and reverse if it is indeed more than dehydration.

Wrt suffering from red flaky patches currently, Weleda Skin Food if it’s localised is good for this and also works as an incidental overnight mask as a final layer or as an instant mask - after cleansing place warm flannel on the face for about a minute then slather on Skin Food and leave for 10 mins before removing. If it's truly very dry and in need of more than incidental TLC then look towards adding in an oil to the routine.

I know you mentioned acne, Storm, so in that sense BHA would be the first thing to look and then bringing in an AHA when that is working for you to help it further. The Paula’s Choice Clear Anti-Redness Exfoliating Solution (in normal or extra strength) may be more suited to you if you’re on the oilier/blemish prone side otherwise the PC Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid is your best starting point. So provided the minimal routine of products isn’t causing any adverse reactions you should be safe to introduce this within the next week or so. I always recommend getting the sample sachets or travel sized version from PC to sort of find ‘your’ acid as it’s different which one works out best for everyone. Work up from 2-3x a week up to every (other) day, depending on need and restrict to the oily/acne prone areas if it’s not an all over thing.

You’ve mentioned active spots and scarring before so fo that I’d be looking towards Vitamin C and Niacinamide, and HA serum for the mild dehydration. Seeing that you’re responding well to serozinc I think you’d get on well with TO Niacinamide 10% to introduce after the BHA. It would be a bit of a gamble but probably ok to introduce with TO Buffet (or TO 2% HA +B5 if you’re truly oily/blemish prone) for hydration at the same time using one in the AM and PM. Then Vitamin C (possibly also from TO, the 23% one) for scarring at a later date as this doesn’t have the highest of priorities but will be beneficial to you (or if it is more of a priority try in place of the Nia first and leave that till later).

What are you looking for in terms of eye cream? Are you using it because you have to (as in your usual face products don’t play well in that area) or because you think you have too?

OP posts:
botemp · 28/12/2016 13:04

Dulci, I'm not 100% convinced on the NIOD eye product, I'm sure it'll have some effect but as it's a peptide heavy formula it's really anyone's guess if it'll do something for you specifically. They (DECIEM) do do eye products well so I'm sure it'll be effective, might tighten up the area a bit but it is pricey for 15ml (the Verso is 30ml so I like to pretend it's a bargain, also buying it from Skincity when on offer helps). How are you with glycolic? It has some in the NIOD, not at huge % I expect but I can't remember if that's one you were avoiding or not.

I tried the Benton Sheet Mask and it is absolutely lovely, great hydrating boost, I half suspect it is similar to the essence but with maybe just a bit more punch? Anyhow, it did the chok-chok thing the Koreans like so much very well (super luminous dewy look). I'll be investing in a box of them sometime soon as it looks to be a good staple with a nice and clean INCI which is impressive as there are very few sheet masks that I actually buy a full box of.

There are some theories that spots in the same place are fungal acne Xmas Shock that never heal over and just continue to get inflamed by the fungus (a yeast strain naturally present on the face usually) and there's a bunch of weird DIY remedies out there. Can't remember what it was exactly anymore but think Head & Shoulders and some form of crotch cream Xmas Confused. However, when they're on the chin/jaw they are more likely to be hormonal related.

Anyone else have new year resolutions/plans skincare wise? I've decided to start looking into Actives for body with a bit more focus after experimenting with TO Retinoid on my body (v. impressive actually in short amount of time unlike the TO 10%), probably will have to do some DIYing as a result and I really should clear out some skincare things that have stood untouched for the past year.

Need to make an order with TO soon, can't decide between the Buffet or the Matrixyl to try, how are the opinions on these faring these days? Also contemplating the Pestle & Mortar Retinoil, whoever bought it and loved it at first sight, how is it working for you now?

Also finished up my P50W morning cleanse routine experiment. No true adverse effects but I didn't really feel like I was saving much time and while it was kinder on my skin wrt to no water used I wasn't wholly convinced of it either so I will repeat in a hurry but it won't be a daily thing for me. Have also started now on the new P50 PIGM version and it's a noticeable difference and step up, it's really good for brightening (can't say much for pigmentation as I've got none currently though I am prone to it genetically) and it's allowed me to dial back the BHA use so all round very happy with it so far.
