North Face Long Down parka - worth £300?

I am going to New York in January and have no really warm coat, so am thinking about getting this. As I'll be outside walking around a lot I'm going to need something very toasty. However, am baulking at the price.

Any feedback on whether it's a worthwhile investment?

Also any other suggestions for stylish, warm down filled 'duvet' type coats welcome. I'd like something knee length.

I like the NOrth Face Triclimate Suzzane - it's got a down removable lining but is very waterproof and very warm and the hood stays up. And it looks good (I think....).

TheNaze73 · 22/11/2016 12:52

Worth every penny

SesameSparkle · 22/11/2016 13:16

I've seen the north face arctic parka on sale for £200 in Costco if it helps. It looks very toasty, but only comes to hip length.

cardoon · 22/11/2016 13:18

Brilliant for dry cold..... not so good in the rain

Quiero · 22/11/2016 13:20

What size are you? I'm just about to put mine on eBay Grin

They really are super warm but I think you could probably get something similar without the NorthFace price tag

ShesGottaTicket2Ride · 22/11/2016 13:27

I love my Lands End Squall Stadium ... about £150. Down with waterproof outer - order a size smaller than you think you will need. Length - below knee.

Momentumista · 22/11/2016 13:57

Querio..really...?! I would need size 12-14.

I'm with TheNaze73. Mine is brilliant and well worth the expense.
However, my friend bought hers much cheaper in America - so could you wait until you get there?

Leatherboundanddown · 22/11/2016 15:33

I have one and it really is like being wrapped in a duvet. It is so thick though and makes me look twice the size!

It isn't waterproof which is a shame

KatharinaRosalie · 22/11/2016 16:33

You're going to NY - they sell North Face in local outlets or TJ Maxx and similar shops for a fraction of this price.

Quiero · 22/11/2016 17:28

Yes really but it's a 16 Sad - They're quite big anyway and I'm a 12 now and it's far too big for me hence why I'm selling it. Katharina makes a good point - you'll get one much cheaper over there.

LizzieMacQueen · 22/11/2016 17:37

Have a look at DIDRIKSONS, their coats are well made in my opinion. You might be able to get something in a Black Friday deal, I know my mailbox has been pinging Black Friday deals all week.

carabos · 22/11/2016 17:48

Anyone got the Arcteryx Patera? I need a warm, properly waterproof coat that comes at least knee length or below. It's £500 so it needs to be tip-top!

oldlaundbooth · 22/11/2016 21:45

I've got a North Face and they are fine in winter. We live just up the road from NYC, in Quebec Grin

But they will be cheaper over here for sure.

oldlaundbooth · 22/11/2016 21:46

Don't forget good boots as well, you need a thick, insulated sole.

WhatIfWhatIf · 22/11/2016 23:24

Yep, mine's on its fourth winter and still looks as it did when I bought it. So toasty warm too. I think it was a great buy.

dudsville · 23/11/2016 01:47

Mines also on its 4th winter. The hood, as pp said, does not blow off and this fascinates me as it's the only coat I've ever owned to manage that. It's warm. Machine washable (mines a lighter colour so gets washed a few times each winter. It's 100% fabulous.

Momentumista · 23/11/2016 12:23

Thanks all.

I have bought a 'large' on ebay - is that going to be too large for me? If so I may well be selling that on...

I am 12 -14 with big bust and podgy stomach. I had a North Face gilet once and that was medium and a little too snug over the bust, hence why I went for large.

OP posts:
dudsville · 23/11/2016 18:47

I have a large and am a 12 up top and a 14 around my hips.

FurryLittleTwerp · 23/11/2016 18:53

I have the North Face Triclimate Suzanne size Medium which fits well. I'm a size 10 - the small was too tight if I put a jumper on underneath. So cozy Smile

bingohandjob · 23/11/2016 19:51

Worth every penny. I bought my knee length Metropolis TNF parka in New York in January after freezing there in my stupid wool fashion coat. Exchange rate is rubbish BUT might be worth waiting and getting it there... do be aware it's not waterproof though. If you want waterproof, get the Arctic Parka. ...They did some great deals (and on the spot discounts for cash in independent stores). Get a decent windproof hat with ear flaps or get ear muffs...the wind HOWLS in New York. Get warm, comfy boots - you'll walk miles.

bingohandjob · 23/11/2016 19:54

And properly warm gloves. I've used my wind and waterproof thermal sealskinz cycling gloves - and they were brilliant. You will love New York in the winter if you're properly, warmly kitted out. I was rubbish the first time I went and cried from the cold it was so bitterly painful.
