Budget Baukjen type jersey dresses?

Malermalergoni · 12/11/2016 19:55

I love the type of really simple, long sleeved, plain jersey dresses, as found in Baukjen, Sonnet James, etc. I think they're generally good value for money, but I'd like to have a stash of them as I seem to change outfits several times a day (messy job, messy toddler, trying to look presentable after travelling etc!)
I'm looking for the dress equivalent of the primark t-shirt iykwim, washable, hardwearing, indestructible, v cheap. Something to just throw on and feel comfy and finished. No, zips, pockets, tucks or embellishments, and nothing skatery at the bottom... More bodycon/tubey. No horizontal stripes (aaargh). Charcoal, navy, understated, flattering. Has anyone found the holy grail ??

M&S have this green dress at the moment.

Haven't tried it myself but the reviews are very good.

MassDebate · 14/11/2016 14:03

AllTheShoes I'm petite (5'3"). As recommended above, I've been really happy with my purchase from the Jersey Dress Co and haven't found it swamps me. I think they work because you can ruch them if you want so you can adjust the length of the skirt/sleeves without it looking like you're a little girl wearing your mum's clothes. Fwiw the dress I bought is just below knee length on me and although the sleeves are probably slightly on the long side, but not excessively so and as the material is stretchy they stay in place if you push them up.

AllTheShoes · 14/11/2016 14:50

Mal I'll have a look, but want quality jersey and am not sure if Topshop will do that.

Mass That's useful to know, I was wondering how long they'd be on someone my size.. I've found that any dresses below the knee really don't look good - I think because I'm long-backed and short-legged, and it emphasises that. So I'd need to get it taken up. I find 3/4 sleeves solves the 'wearing my mum's clothes' issue, so that's less of a problem.

M&s is ticking all the boxes here!
It must be a first. I do like the green one very much.

Good. I'm really pleased with mine :-)

banivani · 15/11/2016 10:38

Am ogling The Jersey Dress Company now. MassDebate, what is your opinion of their sizing? I'm a 16 probably but their size chart doesn't even include it in measurements sigh.

80sWaistcoat · 15/11/2016 10:44

purple dress

M&S have a few this year in quite nice colours.

MassDebate · 15/11/2016 11:22

banivani in my ancient dress from there I'd say the sizing is bang on, but in the Abigale which I've just bought I had to size up (they advised that in the description, thankfully, so I didn't try my usual size). I'd say they are quite bodycon by design though.

banivani · 15/11/2016 11:29

Thanks! It's very hard when they don't actually give measurements (their website is a bit of a disgrace isn't it). Grin

Malermalergoni · 15/11/2016 12:58

Love everything about the purple dress. Except the purple Grin

I didn't know I needed jersey dresses until this thread. I ordered three of the very cheap H&M ones and they came (the next day). They are really nice for the money.

Well above the knee though but fine with thick tights and boots. The fabric/finishing is good for the money - I have never bought anything from H&M before (am old ish!).

Suspect that they are not long enough for what you want OP but really comfortable for when I get home from work!

doctorboo · 15/11/2016 18:53

Formerly Would you mind saying how tall you are? I'm 5ft and quite like the look of the H&M dress...even though I'm a leggings paired with longline vest and tshirt girl.

FormerlyCatherineDeB · 15/11/2016 19:01

5'7" doctor, I sized up and they are good size wise, about 2" above my knees which is fine with thick tights and boot or leggings/ballet flats.

They will be fine for me for a layered look with a long waistcoat, scarf, long boots.

doctorboo · 15/11/2016 20:00

Thanks Formerly I think they could be the perfect length for me (just below the knee) I love how you're going to wear them.

AllTheShoes · 15/11/2016 22:07

The link to the H&M dress just takes me to their homepage (iPad, maybe that's the issue) can someone tell me the name of the dress and maybe I can find it that way? Thanks!

MaidOfStars · 16/11/2016 15:29

Prompted by this thread, I have just ordered two dresses from The Jersey Company. Too late for me, but there is a discount code - EARLYBIRD - that would have reduced them to £10 each.

You're welcome Grin

banivani · 16/11/2016 16:16

MaidofStars it's been a struggle to NOT order from The Jersey Company, but the only thing left in my hypothetical size wasn't my favourite model so I decided to be sensible. Sob.

taybert · 16/11/2016 17:19

My Jersey Dress Company ones arrived yesterday. Really nice, I wouldn't have paid full price but with £70 off they are great value and look really good.

FormerlyCatherineDeB · 16/11/2016 19:26

I like the length/style of the Gap one.

I am wearing one of the H&M ones now, I get changed the minute I get home from work so I don't get my work clothes dirty/dog hairy etc.

I asked DH what he thought and he said ..... is it a nightdress? Charming.
