Cutting your own fringe... Anyone done it?

My fringe needs a trim. It is a straight cut.

Tbh, I'm sick of having to go to the hairdressers every 6 weeks for this and want to learn how to do it myself.

Has anyone successfully done this? Or am I kidding myself?

All the time. Pull a fine tooth comb through it, stopping before the end and then chop up into it.

I cut my own fringe, have done for years. I bought a good sharp scissors and a fringe clip in Boots( www.pretty-pieces.co.uk/Scunci-Fringe-Cut-Clip-p/s14xhamu25.htm ). It's easy !

You can get a clip in Claires to act as a guide to do it.

Do it all the time. In fact I ask my hairdresser to leave it and do it myself. Comb flat, let it bounce up a bit, the point the scissors straight up and snip into it all along the edge. Might have to do it 2 or 3 times to get all the stragglers.

Why cut up and not across?

Loads of times, don't try and do a straight line, do vertical cuts so it's a bit choppy.

I've done it myself for years. Only once screwed it up. I was 15 and the fashion at school was to have a layered fringe. Totally cocked it up! Had to hide it under an Alice band til it grew back. Get a good pair of scissors from boots and just do a little bit at a time.

Do not wet your fridge and then cut it. Once its dry it sort of bounces up shorter than when its wet. What looks nice and level does above the eyebrows in seconds

I used to when I had a fringe.

With dry hair, bring all your fringe into the centre and twist it. Hold with one hand and kind of snip into it (hold scissors vertically) until you've reached the length you want. You can google it. Take off a bit at a time until you get it right.

That way it's not straight across, it curves nicely along the forehead and is slightly longer at the temples iyswim.

Yip, lots of times. I used to recoil in horror at the mere thought of doing this. And then I had kids and v little time to get to the hairdresser. Took the plunge, never looked back. Kids are bigger now but still do it. So fricking handy. I don't have a v heavy fringe, maybe that makes it easier. I think I must do an ok job because the hairdressing police have never arrested me.

I did it and then I looked like Worzel Gummidge. Pay once more and ask your hairdresser to show you how to do it

Oh god. I did it once and ended up looking like the woman from a personal injury advert with the two centimetre micro fringe. Was a bastard to grow back out and my boss laughed at me every time he looked at me for months!

Yep, I used to do it all the time up until few years ago I stopped having fringes. It used to look great, not at all amateurish. The trick is not to make it appear a heavy fringe, do it wispy. Firstly, cut it horizontally to shorten the fringe and with the tip of the scissors, do small, short vertical cuts along the bottom of the line, it'll make the fringe look light and bouncy.

I do it all the time. Usually I use nail scissors. It looks fine. I've started using the twisting method and it works really well

I must add, the obvious trick is not to do it when your hair is wet, because on wet hair its impossible to judge how short it'll be when it dries. So cut it when fringe is dry. You can always tidy up the uneven bits afterwards when its wet, without chopping too much of height. Good luck.

Watch some YouTube vids. Don't do it wet. Get some proper hairdressing scissors, they're not necessarily that expensive- mine were about £5.

I use this method on myself and it's so easy!

Cut my own fringe for ages as it grows fairly fast. Seems my technique differs from above. I cut across, just little snips and always a dry fringe. It looks fine and tbh I have never met a hairdresser that doesn't cut it too short.

I do mine all the time cos I hate going to hairdressers

I either do the thing with joining it together in a twist or use thinning scissors or use my glasses as a guide
